CREPÚSCULO DOS DEUSES (SUNSET BOULEVARD, USA, 1950) – A atuação de Gloria Swanson como Norma Desmond, uma estrela de Hollywood vivendo no ostracismo, é realmente icônica e possibilita uma série de leituras sobre o mecanismo muitas vezes perverso da indústria cultural. O mais interessante é isso ter sido levado às telas no início dos anos 50, como uma autocrítica de como Hollywood trata seus astros quando eles não são mais jovens. De certa forma, o filme de Billy Wilder poderia ser uma primeira versão de A SUBSTÂNCIA, ao mostrar Norma procurando inutilmente, na relação com Joe Gillis (William Holden), um retorno à juventude e à fama. Outro paralelo com o filme de Demi Moore são os aspectos mórbidos do roteiro – o macaco de estimação e seu enterro no jardim da mansão abandonada, onde Norma vive, também abandonada, e o assassinado de Joe. A narração em off de Joe realça os elementos da atmosfera noir do filme, sem, a meu ver, comprometer uma história instigante e extremamente atual em relação ao descarte automático de quem não está de acordo com os padrões exigidos por uma sociedade ainda muito doente. The most interesting thing is that it was brought to the screen in the early 50s, as a self-criticism of how Hollywood treats its stars when they are no longer young. In a way, Billy Wilder's film could be a first version of THE SUBSTANCE, by showing Norma looking in vain, in her relationship with Joe Gillis (William Holden), for a return to youth and fame. Another parallel with Demi Moore's film are the morbid aspects of the script – the pet monkey and his burial in the garden of the abandoned mansion, where Norma lives, also abandoned, and Joe's murder. Joe's voice-over narration highlights the elements of the film's noir atmosphere, without, in my view, compromising a thought-provoking and extremely current story in relation to the automatic discarding of those who do not conform to the standards required by a society that is still very sick.
