3640 - FLORES PARTIDAS (2005)

Bill Murray, um ator maravilhoso e imperdível

FLORES PARTIDAS (BROKEN FLOWERS, USA, 2005) – Jim Jarmush é obrigatório. No seu filme anterior a esse, SOBRE CAFÉ E CIGARROS, ele já tinha mostrado essas cenas de pequenos absurdos diárias, tão despercebidas quanto impactantes. Em FP, o centro é Don (Bill Murray, também obrigatório), solteiro, solitário, meio deprimido e com uma lista longa de ex-namoradas. Um dia, uma delas, anonimamente, lhe manda uma carta: ele tem um filho de 20 anos, prestes a procurá-lo. Don, então, faz um tour nostálgico, visitando as possíveis remetentes. Mas a vida é caótica e não linear, nem sempre do jeito que queremos. O filme é sutil, assim como as descobertas de Don e sua transformação no fim. Jim Jarmush is obligatory. In his previous film, COFFEE AND CIGARETTS, he had already shown the little daily absurds, as unnoticed as impacting. In BF, the pivotal character is Don (Bill Murray, also obligatory), single, lonely, kind of depressed and with a long list of ex-girlfriends. One day, he gets a letter from one of them: he has a 20-year-old son, who is about to look for him. Then, Don makes a nostalgic tour, visiting the possible senders. But life is messy, and it doesn't always happily resolve itself just because we want it to. I liked how subtle the film was; Don doesn't make any huge ground-breaking discoveries about himself, but nevertheless you sense that he's a slightly different person after his journey than he was before it.

Um filme imperdível

UMA MULHER ALTA (DYLDA, Rússia, 2019) – Em 1945, Leningrado é uma cidade devastada pela guerra, com a população lutando pela sobrevivência. É, sem dúvida, um dos melhores filmes da década, cujo roteiro visita, delicada e profundamente, temas como amor, desilusão, maternidade e morte. Obra-prima imperdível, vencedora do Festival de Cannes, 1919. Canal Brasil. 1945, Leningrad. WWII has devastated the city, demolishing its buildings and leaving its citizens in tatters, physically and mentally. Two young women search for meaning and hope in the struggle to rebuild their lives amongst the ruins. Undoubtedly, one of the best movies of the decade, whose script touches, delicately and deeply, themes as love, delusion, motherhood and death. Unmissable masterpiece. Winner Cannes Festival, 1919. A cena mais dilacerante do filme

  PEQUENO DICIONÁRIO AMOROSO 2 (BRASIL, 2015) – Nessa sequência, Gabriel e Luiza se estão diante um do outro 15 anos depois. O encontro, sintomaticamente, se dá no enterro do padrasto de Luiza, numa cena meio pobre do roteiro, indicando um novo recomeço, uma nova vida para o casal do grande amor do filme anterior. Falta humor à história e empatia com o espectador, e a intimidade entre os personagens é tão artificial quanto as discussões sobre a natureza do relacionamento amoroso. Melhor reler os Fragmentos de um Discurso Amoroso de Barthes, presente, inclusive, numa cena rápida, na qual Luiza compra um exemplar numa feira da Praça XV. Nenhum amor resiste a uma janela de tempo tão ampla. Melhor é deixar para lá, não chore não... In this sequence, Gabriel e Luiza face each other 15 years later. They meet in a funeral – a poor scene supposedly indicating a new life for the couple of the previous movie. The story lacks humor and the audience never relates to the plot, and intimacy among the characters is as artificial as the discussions about the nature of romantic relationships. Better reread Barthes’ Fragments of a Loving Discourse, which makes an appearance in a short scene: Luiza buys an used edition in a Praça XV fair. No love can resist a scope of a 15-year-time window. Let it be… and don’t cry…     

   

3637 - PEQUENO DICIONÁRIO AMOROSO (1997)

Algo parecido com um raio de sol...

PEQUENO DICIONÁRIO AMOROSO (BRASIL, 1997) – Apesar de tentar escancarar as vicissitudes do relacionamento amoroso, o filme de Sandra Werneck, apenas tangencia as dores inerentes às histórias de amor, através da paixão entre Gabriel (Nelson Dantas) e Luiza (Andrea Beltrão, faiscante). Fica a impressão de que as complexidades desses casos podem ser resolvidas pela palavra. Porém, todos sabemos que não é bem assim. De qualquer forma, o pretenso didatismo do roteiro ajuda a estabelecer uma empatia de uma audiência carente de respostas para suas questões. Despite the effort to face the vicissitudes of  relationships, Sandra Werneck’s movie only slightly approaches the inherent pain of love stories, through the passion between Gabriel (Nelson Dantas) and Luiza (Andrea Beltrão, sparkling). What is left is the impression that the complexities of these affairs can hardly have a word-based solution. However, we all know that it is not the ways the cookie crumbles. Anyway, the soi-disant didacticism of the script establishes a direct connection with the audience, always in need of answers for their most intimate questions. Canal Brasil.     

     

3636 - AMOR À TODA PROVA (2011)

Ryan Gosling ensinando Steve Carrel

  AMOR À TODA PROVA (CRAZY, STUPID, LOVE, USA, 2011) – Os dois títulos, em português e no original, são ruins. O filme não trata especificamente do amor sob a ótica da loucura, embora muito de insanidade o caracterize. Cal (Steve Carrel, sempre maravilhosamente deslocado) é deixado por sua esposa (Julianne Moore, mal escalada) e passa a ser treinado por um coach de paquera (Ryan Gosling). Enquanto isso, outras subtramas vão construindo uma história muito significativa para os sentimentalmente marginalizados. Both titles, English and Portuguese, are quite lousy. The movie is not especifically about the craziness of love, tough much insanity may be found in it. Cal (Steve Carrel, always wonderfully out of place) is left by his wife (Julianne Moore, certainly miscast) and starts being couched by Jacob (Ryan Gosling). Meanwhile, there are a couple of other sub-plots goind on, putting together a especially meaningful story for the sentimentally misfit. 

     

3635 - UM DIA DE CHUVA EM NOVA IORQUE (2019)

Elle Fanning

 UM DIA DE CHUVA EM NOVA IORQUE (A RAINY DAY IN NEW YORK, USA, 2019) – Woody Allen continua demonstrando sua paixão por Manhattan, suas ruas, seus parques e as histórias de amor. Entre as várias situações de encontro e desencontro, Elle Fanning toma conta das cenas com sua insopitável energia. Não dá mais para não a procurar ansiosamente nos seus próximos filmes – em suas cenas, suas falas já são clássicas, e mesmo em silêncio, Joe-Joe, ela ainda domina completamente a tela. Não é o melhor Allen, mas o filme flanqueia com filmes como VICKY, CRISTINA, BARCELONA, MIDNIGHT IN PARIS e MATCH POINT (este com Scarlett, claro). Woody Allen keeps displaying his passion for Manhattan, its streets, its parks and the love stories. Among this lost-and-found love stories, Elle Fanning mastered the scenes with her uncontrollable energy. It is inevitable to look for Elle in her next flicks – the scenes in which she has monologues are already classic, and if she is in silence, Joe-Joe, she still completely dominates the frame. It is not the Allen’s best, but it is on par with films such as VICKY, CRISTINA, BARCELONA, MIDNIGHT IN PARIS and MATCH POINT (with Scarlett, of course).     

 

3634 - O CASO RICHARD JEWELL (2019)

Clint, grandíssimo

 O CASO RICHARD JEWELL (RICHARD JEWELL, USA, 2019) – After foiling a bomb attack at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics security guard Richard Jewell is an instant hero. However, when the FBI leaks to the media that he is a suspect in the bombing his life becomes a nightmare. Clint Eastwood is simply amazing and, of course, obligatory. Being in the industry for over 70 years and still managing to impress. The powerful story and thrilling scenes are to remain in the memory of cinema. In the end, Clint Eastwood handled a properly written script and brought a thought-provoking story to life with the great aid of the casting chosen. Definitely, he does something no other director can do. 

 

3633 - O DIÁRIO DE ANNE FRANK (1959)

A guerra, da janela...

 O DIÁRIO DE ANNE FRANK (THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK, USA, 1959) – O filme é baseado na peça tirada do diário de Anne Frank que, de uma família judia, teve que se esconder dos nazistas na Holanda ocupada em 1942, com outros refugiados, em um sótão.  A importância do diário é o registro do medo permanente e das relações redimensionadas com o confinamento .The story is based on a stage play which was in turn based on the actual diary of Anne Frank, whose family (being Jewish) went into hiding in Nazi-occupied Holland in 1942, sharing a very small space with several others. The Diary is most important for its record of the daily lives of real individuals who lived in constant fear because of the Nazis and their irrational persecutions.

 

3632 - O PRIMEIRO HOMEM (2018)

Gosling, com a cabeça na Lua

O PRIMEIRO HOMEM (FIRST MAN, USA, 2018) – Vendo o filme pela segunda vez, achei-o muito melhor: não é um filme sobre a ida do homem à Lua, mas um retrato minucioso da vida de Neil Armstrong (esplendidamente interpretado por Ryan Gosling), um homem contido, reservado, tão focado no seu trabalho, que poderia ser classificado como frio e distante, especialmente em relação à sua família. Armstrong, no filme, é retratado como um homem obcecado pela missão que o transformaria no primeiro homem a pisar na Lua. This second screening has proved to be much better – it is not a movie about man landing on the Moon, but a deep portrait of Neil Armstrong’s life (played splendidly by Ryan Gosling), a reserved man, focused on his work, wrongly seen as cold and distant, especially in relation to his family. In the movie, he is shown as obsessed with the mission that would make him the first man to step on the Moon. 

 

3631 - BORAT - FITA DE CINEMA SEGUINTE (2020)

Borat, demolidor

BORAT - FITA DE CINEMA SEGUINTE (USA, 2020) – Sempre iconoclasta, Sacha Baron Cohen aproveita, no melhor sentido, a onda do corona vírus, para dizimar as hipocrisias da sociedade americana. A melhor cena é com Rudolph Giuliani, numa merecida situação humilhante. Maria Bakalova, a filha de Borat, também tem uma atuação de destaque. Always iconoclast, Sasha Baron Cohen surfs, in the best sense, the coronavirus wave, to shatter the American society’s hypocrisies. The best scene displays Rudolph Giuliani in a deserved humiliating situation. Maria Bakalova, Borat’s daughter, is also worth mentioning. Prime.

 O CRAVO EM A ROSA (BRASIL, 2017) - Os 60 anos de carreira dos atores Rosamaria Murtinho e Mauro Mendonça são o tema do documentário "O Cravo e a Rosa", apresentado no Festival do Rio 2017. Boas imagens de arquivo e uma bela história de amor entre dois dos atores mais representativos da televisão brasileira. The 60-year-old career of Rosamaria Murtinho and Mauro Mendonça is the focus of this documentary, which premiered in Festival do Rio, in 2017. Detailed footage of their works and a memorable love story. Canal Brasil.

  PELÉ ETERNO (BRASIL, 2004) - Documentário sobre a carreira de Pelé, com boas imagens de arquivo sobre a trajetória do jogador, desde o sucesso no Santos e a ida para o Cosmos de Nova Iorque. Ótimo jogador, mas um ser humano altamente questionável. Documentary about Pelé’s career, with good footage of his trajectory on the fields. Great soccer player, but a questionable human being. Canal Brasil.

3628 - VELOCIDADE MÁXIMA (1994)

Sandra, na direção

 VELOCIDADE MÁXIMA (SPEED, USA, 1994) – A ideia simples foi muito bem executada pelo diretor Jan de Bont (do ótimo TWISTER): um policial (Keanu Reeves, perfeito) tenta impedir a explosão de uma bomba num ônibus, cuja detonação está atrelada a sua velocidade mínima de 50 milhas. No volante, a então promissora Sandra Bullock. Mesmo depois de tantos anos, o filme funciona como thriller de ação incessante. The simple idea of the plot was well executed by director Jan de Bont (of the great TWISTER): a LA cop (Keanu Reeves, perfect) tries to prevent a bomb from exploding abord a bus by keeping its speed above 50 mph. On the steering wheel, a then promising Sandra Bullock. Even after all those years, the movie works as a non-stop action thriller.  

 

3627 - APOLLO 13, DO DESASTRE AO TRIUNFO (1995)

Perrengue no espaço

 APOLLO 13, DO DESASTRE AO TRIUNFO (APOLLO 13, USA, 1995) – O filme de Ron Howard mostra muito bem o perrengue dos três astronautas da Apollo 13 quando, no espaço, tiveram que enfrentar um problema técnico e não puderam completar a missão. A presença sempre competente de Tom Hanks, no papel do comandante do módulo, Jim Lovell, garante muito do interesse do filme. Outra presença particularmente significativa para mim é a de Kathleen Quinlan, convidada, em 1974, em dois inesquecíveis episódios de OS WALTONS. A sequência final, quando os três astronautas são resgatados, é emocionante por sua simplicidade. Isso conta muito a favor de Ron Howard, cujo melhor trabalho é ainda sua filha Bryce Dallas Howard, que tem uma ponta no filme. Ron Howard’s movie shows exactly the havoc of Apollo 13’s three astronauts, when they had a technical problem (“Houston, we have a problem”) in space, preventing them from completing the mission. Tom Hanks, always competent, is greatly responsible for the movie’s success. Another particularly meaningful presence is Kathleen Quinlan, guest star, in 1974, in two unforgettable episodes of THE WALTONS. The final sequence, when the astronauts are rescued, is touching in its simplicity. this proves to be an asset to Ron Howard, whose best work is still his daughter Bryce Dallas Howard, who, by the way, has a cameo appearance in the movie. Prime.   

 

3626 - UM CONTO DE INVERNO (2014)

UM CONTO DE INVERNO (WINTER’S TALE, USA, 2014) – O tema da reencarnação é tratado aqui com lirismo e cores românticas. This movie has a few technical problems, and leaves a lot up to personal interpretation. The script is a bit mysterious (at best) and incoherent (at worst). The cast and have their sweet moments of tenderness, and the innocence about it is touching. It's a fairy tale for adults. If you're the pragmatic type, this might not be a great movie for you. At the very least, director Akiva Goldsman uncannily balances fantasy and realism, and even though it isn't quite magical, it promises to be a moving tale of enduring love that will sweep you off your feet.

 

3625 - HOTEL TRANSILVÂNIA 3: FÉRIAS MONSTRUOSAS (2018)

HOTEL TRANSILVÂNIA 3 – FÉRIAS MONSTRUOSAS (HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 3 – SUMMER VACATION, USA, 2018) – Este terceiro filme é o mais fraco dos três até agora. Faltou imaginação. A velha solução de colocar a família em férias atrapalhadas não funcionou. O aparecimento de um interesse amoroso para Drac se tornou o tema central, e a maioria dos outros personagens ficaram em segundo plano, sem muito o que fazer. Ainda com algumas boas cenas e flashes de humor, mas ficou evidente que o enredo não foi aproveitado. This third edition is the weakest of the three so far. Clearly, lack of imagination. The old solution of having a troubled vacation had no effect. Drac and his love interest are the main focus in this and most of the other characters become tertiary and are no more than glorified background characters.It's still got enough of the wacky animation and outlandish humor, but it kind of feels like they didn't have enough to do with the plot. 

 

3624 - HOTEL TRANSILVÂNIA 2 (2015)

Family blood...

      HOTEL TRANSILVÂNIA 2 (HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2, USA, 2015) – Apesar de manter clichês comuns a sequências, HT2 funciona principalmente por causa da empatia de seus personagens. Os conflitos familiares poderiam ser amenizados com um pouco mais de imaginação. Contudo, é impossível não se comover com os esforços de Drácula (Adam Sandler) para estar com seu neto e descobrir nele traços de vampirismo. É neste momento que o enredo se contradiz, ao admitir, como condição de aceitação, o fato de o filho de Mavis ter, de fato, presas e se transformar em um morcego. De qualquer forma, o filme é muito bom. Despite keeping the common clichés, HT2 works pretty well, mainly because of the characters. The unimaginative clichés of parenthood & family turmoil could have been softened if a little more imagination had been used. However, we can not help being touched by Dracula’s efforts to be with his grandson and find in him traits of vampirism. It is at this point that the script gets contradictory: it conditions that Mavis’ son can only be accepted if he has fangs and turns into a bat. Anyway, the movie is excellent. 

 

3623 - HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA (2012)

Impossível não amar esse filme

HOTEL TRANSILVÂNIA (HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA, USA, 2012) – Um conde Drácula superprotetor com a filha rendeu uma as histórias mais adoráveis sobre o amor paternal. Drácula faz de tudo (tudo mesmo) para que sua filha não sofra, e isso inclui um cuidado extremo com qualquer um que dela se aproxime. Emocionante, delicado e inspirador, o filme do russo Genndy Tartakovsky é para ver sempre. An extremely careful father Dracula is the starting point for one of the loveliest paternal stories on the screen. Dracula does everything he can to prevent his daughter from suffering, and this includes an utmost assessment of whoever gets near her. Touching, delicate and inspiring, Genndy Tartakovsky’s movie is to be always seen. 

 

3622 - ATRAÇÃO PERIGOSA (2010)

Rebecca Hall, encantadora

 ATRAÇÃO PERIGOSA (THE TOWN, USA, 2010) – Apesar de ser péssimo ator, Ben Affleck se mostrou um bom diretor neste filme. A história de um assaltante de bancos (Affleck), apaixonado pela gerente de uma das agências assaltadas, Claire (Rebecca Hall, irresistivelmente encantadora no filme), tem ritmo e ótimas sequências de ação. Vale sempre a pena rever. Despite being a horrible actor, Ben Affleck proved to be a good director in this movie. The story about a bank robber (Affleck), falling in love for a bank manager, Claire (Rebecca Hall, irresistibly mesmerizing here), has rhythm and great action sequences. It is worth viewing again.       

 

3621 - EU, MEU IRMÃO E NOSSA NAMORADA (2007)

Encontrar Juliette Binoche numa livraria: o céu deve ser assim.

EU, MEU IRMÃO E NOSSA NAMORADA (DAN IN REAL LIFE, USA, 2007) – Steve Carell é Dan, um viúvo, com três filhas. Durante uma visita aos pais, conhece uma mulher numa livraria e se apaixona por ela. Também, pudera: ela é Juliette Binoche e está numa livraria (meu entendimento do que seria o cenário perfeito do paraíso). Logo depois, ao contar as boas novas em casa, descobre que ela é a nova namorada de seu irmão. Carell, contido e angustiado, percebendo a felicidade lhe escapando das mãos, leva o filme junto com Binoche, entre olhares e silêncio. O deus ex-machina resolve o imbrogilo no fim. HBO. Steve Carell is Dan, a widower, with three daughters. During a visit to his parents, he meets a woman in a bookshop and falls in love for her. Who wouldn’t? She is Juliette Binoche and she is in a bookshop (my understanding of what heaven would be). Later, he finds out that she is his brother’s new girlfriend. Carell, reserved and anguished, realizing that happiness is going down the drain, carries the movie with Binoche, focusing on silence and glances. In the end, deus ex-machina finds a solution to the plot. HBO.  

       

3620 - O JARDINEIRO FIEL (2005)

A bela história de amor entre Rachel Weisz e Ralph Fiennes

  O JARDINEIRO FIEL (THE CONSTANT GARDENER, USA, 2005) – apesar de longo demais, o filme de Fernando Meirelles consegue capturar os vários aspectos da relação de um diplomata (Ralph Fiennes) com uma ativista (Rachel Weisz), cuja luta para proteger comunidades pobres africanas, tratadas irresponsavelmente como laboratório para uma grande farmacêutica. Fiennes é um ator extraordinário, contido, intenso, capaz de estabelecer imediata conexão com o espectador. O filme denuncia como países de terceiro mundo são explorados, e mostra a violência contra quem se opõe aos seus interesses. Despite being too long, Fernando Meirelles’ movie capture several aspects of the relationship of a diplomat (Ralph Fiennes) and an activist (Rachel Weisz), whose struggle to protect African poor communities, treated irresponsibly as a lab for a pharmaceutical company corporate. Fiennes is an outstanding actor, reserved, intense, able to establish immediate connection with the viewer. The movie denounces how third world countries are exploited, and shows the violence against who is not aligned with corporate interests.
