3563 - O HOMEM DE SEIS MILHÕES DE DÓLARES - TEMPORADA 1 - 13 EPISÓDIOS (1974)

O HOMEM DE SEIS MILHÕES DE DÓLORES – TEMPORADA 1 / 13 EPISÓDIOS (THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN, SEASON 1, USA, 1974) – A primeira temporada de TSMDM começa com dois telefilmes à guisa de piloto da série, nos quais Steve Austin é um civil a serviço da Força Aérea e não coronel, patente que só seria assumida a partir da primeira temporada. Em destaque: o episódio 4, THE DAY OF THE ROBOT, com o recém-falecido John Saxon; o episódio 8, THE RESCUE OF ATHENA ONE, com a participação da então senhora Majors, Farrah Fawcett, em que ela faz uma astronauta; o episódio 11, BURNING BRIGHT, com a participação luxuosa de William Shatner, e o seguinte, THE COWARD, com outro tripulante da Enterprise, George Takei. A produção é geralmente bem fraca, com seríssimas restrições orçamentárias, aproveitando takes de outros filmes, mal costurados entre as sequências. Lee Majors, certamente limitado como ator, acertou no tom meio blasé do personagem biônico e flutua entre as histórias dentro de uma margem de segurança em termos de amplitude dramática. Mas a abertura continua sendo icônica e um dos melhores momentos da TV americana em todos os tempos. The first season of TSMDM starts with two TV movies in which Steve Austin is a civil pilot serving the Air Force and not a colonel, rank he would have in the first season. Highlights: episode 4, THE DAY OF THE ROBOT, with the late John Saxon; episode 8, THE RESCUE OF ATHENA ONE, with the participation of Farrah Fawcett, the then Mrs. Majors, as an astronaut; episode 11, BURNING BRIGHT, with William Shatner, and the following, THE COWARD, with another crew member of the Enterprise, George Takei. The production has clear and serious budget restrictions, using takes from other movies, badly sewed among the sequences. Lee Majors, a limited actor, was clever to adopt a blasé attitude of the bionic character and survives in the scripts inside a safe zone in terms of dramatic range.  

 

3562 - MELHOR IMPOSSÍVEL (1997)

Nicholson encontrando o amor...

MELHOR É IMPOSSÍVEL (AS GOOD AS IT GETS, USA, 1997) – Jack Nicholson e Hellen Hunt ganharam, respectivamente, o Oscar de Melhor Ator e Melhor Atriz de 1998, com esse filme de James L. Brooks, sobre um misantropo mal-humorado apaixonado por uma garçonete, mãe solteira de um menino com problemas de saúde. Nicholson, um ator realmente superlativo, está perfeito nos maneirismos de Melvin Udall, um escritor recluso, aparentemente com raiva do mundo, mas, como era de se esperar, com um coração de ouro. Hellen Hunt, sempre um pouco dura na sua atuação, consegue, em alguns momentos, fazer de seu personagem, uma mistura de sofrimento e desilusão. Ainda um belo filme. Jack Nicholson and Hellen Hunt won, respectively, the Academy Awards and the Golden Globe for Best Actor and Actress, for this movie directed by James L. Brooks, about a misanthropic author who falls in love with a single mother waitress. Nicholson, a superlative actor, is perfect in the mannerisms of Melvin Udall, a reclusive man, apparently grumpy, but, as expected, with a golden heart. Hellen Hunt, always a little bit unemotional, succeeds in blending her character with suffering and delusion. Still a nice movie.  

 

3561 - STAR TREK, THE ORIGINAL SERIES - TEMPORADA 2 (1966)

  STAR TREK, TOS – TEMPORADA 2 / 26 EPISÓDIOS (USA, 1967) – Esta segunda temporada de STTOS tem alguns bons episódios: o melhor deles talvez seja o primeiro, AMOK TIME, no qual Spock, no seu período de acasalamento, Pon Farr, tem que voltar a Vulcan para encontrar sua futura esposa; em JOURNEY TO BABEL, episódio 10, a Enterprise se transforma num congresso de diplomatas, entre os quais, o pai de Spock, Sarek; o episódio 12, DEADLY YEARS, a tripulação é exposta a uma radiação que a envelhece rapidamente; no episódio 17, A PIECE OF ACTION, meu preferido, Kirk e Spock chegam a um planeta que emula uma sociedade com gangsteres na década de 20; em PATTERNS OF FORCE, episódio 21, novamente Kirk e Spock estão numa planeta igual à Alemanha nazista. A segunda temporada é irregular, nitidamente mais ousada nos temas do que a primeira. Kirk, aliás, continua a ser o maior mulherengo da galáxia. The second season of STTOS has some good episodes: the best one maybe the first, AMOK TIME, in which Spock, in his mating period, Pon Farr, has to return to Vulcan to meet his intended future wife, betrothed from childhood. In JOURNEY TO BABEL, episode 10, the Enterprise becomes a congress for diplomats, among which is Spock’s father, Sarek; episode 12, DEADLY YEARS, the crew is exposed to a strange radiation that rapidly ages them; episode 17, A PIECE OF ACTION, my favorite, Kirk and Spock come to a planet that emulates a gangster society of the 20s; PATTERNS OF FORCE, episode 21, again Kirk and Spock are in a Nazi-like planet. The second season is irregular and clearly bolder than the first. Kirk. By the way, keeps on being the greatest womanizer of the galaxy. Netflix. 

       

3560 - A CONVERSAÇÃO (1974)

Gene é um gênio...

  A CONVERSAÇÃO (THE CONVERSATION, USA, 1974) – Este filme de Coppola é um olhar sobre um solitário paranoico com consciência pesada por causa do trabalho que ele vem fazendo por anos. É um fascinante estudo de personalidade: Harry Caul (Gene Hackman, soberbo) é emocionalmente disciplinado e brilhante no que faz – ele espiona as pessoas profissionalmente, ainda que mantenha sua privacidade a todo custo. Hackman entrega uma atuação soberbamente controlada como um espião que se envolve demais em um dos seus casos, ficando no centro de uma trama macabra. Assim como em BLOW UP (1966), sobre o que o olho humano é capaz de distinguir através do mecanismo do zoom de uma câmera, A CONVERSAÇÃO é sobre a manipulação do som até a frase entreouvida torna-se clara entre os sons da cidade. TC Cult. This Coppola’s movie is a study of a paranoiac loner who is suffering a guilty conscience over the work he has done over the years. Its’s a fascinating study of character: Harry Caul (Gene Hackman, superb) is emotionally disciplined and brilliant at what he does. He is a man who eavesdrops on others for a living, yet values his own privacy to a self-stifling fault. Hackman gives a superbly controlled performance as wire-tapper who gets too involved in one of his cases, leaving him in the center of a macabre swirl of events. Like 1966’s BLOW UP, which dealt with what the human eye is capable of discerning through the mechanism of a camera and what happens when one zooms in, THE CONVERSATION deals with the manipulation of sound to make out a sentence that lies just underneath the sounds of the city. 3559 - O PREÇO DA VERDADE (2019)

 O PREÇO DA VERDADE (DARK WATERS,  USA, 2019) – Rob Billot (Mark Ruffalo, mais íntegro impossível) é um advogado corporativo que começa a combater a gigante DuPont, depois da morte de pessoas e animais numa cidade em West Virginia, por causa do despejo de resíduos tóxicos. A história real, transportada para a tela com didatismo, é uma denúncia do envenenamento da população mundial pelos produtos que consumimos. O caso provou ser apenas o início de um dos casos mais escandalosos de desastre ambiental e de saúde pública já noticiados, e também de má-fé corporativa. Mais assustador do que qualquer história de terror, porque esta, infelizmente, é verdade. O diretor Todd Haynes conduz a trama com circunspecção surpreendente, adequando seu estilo exuberante à austeridade do tema. Prime. Rob Billot (Mark Ruffalo, more righteous impossible) is a corporative lawyer who starts fighting the giant DuPont, after people and animals die in a town in West Virginia, due to toxic waste dropped in nature. The true story, adapted didactically to the screen, is a denouncement of poisoning by products we have been consuming. It proves to be the beginning of one of the most scandalous cases of environment disasters and public health. Director Todd Haynes leads the movie with surprising circumspection, adapting his exuberant style to the austerity of the theme.  More terrifying than any horror movie, because this one, unfortunately, is real. Prime. 

 

3558 - INTRIGAS DE ESTADO (1999)

  INTRIGAS DE ESTADO (STATE OF PLAY, USA, 2009) – Russel Crowe é um jornalista da velha escola. Farejando um escândalo envolvendo um senador (Ben Affleck, sem comentários), seu amigo de faculdade, e com a ajuda de uma ambiciosa autora de um blog (Rachel McAdams, mais bela impossível), ele vai atrás da história, desvendando as pistas de um assassinato. Ainda um grande filme. Russel Crowe is an old school journalist who sniffs a scandal involving a senator (Ben Affleck, terrible, as always), his old college friend. With the aid of an ambitious young rookie blog writer (Rachel McAdams, more beautiful impossible), he starts investigating, uprooting clues that lead him to a corporate cover-up of a murder. Still a great movie.  

  

3557 - BLACK RAIN (1989)

Sandy sendo orientado por Ridley Scott

   CHUVA NEGRA (BLACK RAIN, USA, 1989) – Sandy vai ao Japão enfrentar a Yakuza. Sim, Michael Douglas, um policial indomável, e seu parceiro (Andy Garcia, pouco aproveitado) têm que conduzir até o Japão um membro da Yakuza, preso nos EUA. O filmaço de Ridley Scott, de certa forma, é o irmão mais novo de BLADE RUNNER, com Ridley pintando as noites de Osaka com as cores oníricas de neon. A história tem uma atmosfera característica dos anos 80, mas se olharmos além, dá para apreciar o talento de Ridley Scott do começo ao fim. Tudo funciona neste thriller policial, repleto de classe e estilo. Sandy goes to Japan to face Yakuza. Yes, Michael Douglas, an untamed cop, and his partner (Andy Garcia, on a small role) are assigned to take a member of Yakuza. This great Ridley Scott’s movie is, in a way, the younger brother of BLADE RUNNER, with Ridley painting the nighttime streets of Osaka as some kind of neon-lit, nightmarish maze. The story is riddled with 80s cop movie clichés, but if you see past that you will appreciate the piercing atmosphere and mood that Ridley piles on. Everything blends in this cop thriller, oozing style and panache.

 

3556 - GEMINI MAN (2019)

Mary Elizabeth Winstead - teria sido o melhor clone

  GEMINI MAN (USA, 2019) – Will Smith ainda continua procurando um bom filme de ficção científica – este aqui poderia ter dado certo, mas o roteiro meio frouxo e CGI irregular atrapalham a boa ideia de se ter um matador profissional aposentado tendo que enfrentar um clone mais jovem de si mesmo. O ótimo Clive Owen está desperdiçado no papel de vilão. A bela Mary Elizabeth Winstead, o contraponto romântico da história, é que tem a melhor atuação. Will Smith is still looking for a good sci-fi movie to star – this could have been a success, but the feeble script and irregular CGI impair the good idea of a retired professional hitman having to fight a younger clone of himself. The great Clive Owen is wasted as a villain. The beautiful Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the romantic counterpart, has the best performance in the flick.

Belo é o amor pelo filho

  A VIDA É BELA (LA VITA È BELLA (Itália, 1997) – Usando a imaginação e o bom humor, um livreiro judeu (Roberto Benigni, Oscar de Melhor Ator), tenta proteger seu filho dos perigos e do sofrimento, num campo de concentração, durante a WW2). Belo, sensível e emocionante, principalmente por causa da atuação de Benigni e da maneira italiana de enfrentar os horrores da guerra. Using imagination and humor, aa open-minded Jewish librarian tries to protect his son from the dangers and suffering of a concentration camp, during WW2. Beautiful, sensitive and touching, mainly because of Beningni’s performance nad the Italian way to cope with the horrors of war.

      MY WAY: ASCENSÃO E QUEDA DE BERLUSCONI (Itália, 2016) – Documentário da Netflix sobre a figura histriônica de Silvio Berlusconi, os escândalos de sua vida política e privada e o estilo de vida desta personalidade folclórica. Surpreendentemente interessante e revelador. Netflix documentary about the histrionic figure of Silvio Berlusconi, the scandals of his private and political life, and the lifestyle of this folkloric personality. Surprisingly interesting and revealing.  

      

3553 - SICÁRIO: DIA DO SOLDADO (2018)

 

A luta no deserto

      SICÁRIO: DIA DO SOLDADO (SICARIO: DAY OF THE SOLDADO, USA, Itália, 2018) – Segundo filme de uma futura trilogia, esta sequência dirigida pelo italiano Stefano Sollima (de SOMORRA e SUBURRA) segue um desdobramento previsível da guerra às drogas: os jovens que, em determinado momento, serão usados pelos cartéis. A atuação monumental de Benicio Del Toro, de volta ao papel do misterioso Alejandro, faz valer a pena rever esse filme impactante. Second edition of a future trilogy, this sequence directed by Stefano Sollima (SOMORRA and SUBURRA) follows a predicable development of the war on drugs: youngsters that, in a certain moment, will be used by the cartels. Benicio Del Toro’s monumental performance, again as the mysterious Alejandro, makes seeing again this great movie worthwhile.      

 

3552 - SICÁRIO - TERRA DE NINGUÉM (2015)

Guerra no escuro...

        SICÁRIO – TERRA DE NINGUÉM (SICARIO, USA, 2015) – Kate Marcer (Emily Blunt), agente idealista do FBI, é convocada para uma operação governamental na fronteira do México e dos Estados Unidos. Ela sabe que a missão tem a ver com o narcotráfico, mas não tem certeza – todos os envolvidos no projeto, o excêntrico Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) e o taciturno Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro), são figuras dúbias e fazem questão de não esclarecer muito e explicar menos ainda. Assim, o diretor Dennis Villeneuve mostra a natureza insidiosa da guerra contra as drogas e sua infiltração deletéria nos dois lados da luta. Kate Marcer (Emily Blunt), an idealist FBI agent, is enlisted by a government task force at the border of US and Mexico. She suspects that the mission has to do with the war against drugs, but she is not certain – all involved in the project,  the eccentric Matt Graver (Josh Brolin) and the quiet Alejandro (Benicio Del Toro), are dubious characters and do everything to keep the real objectives in the shadows and explain even less. Thus, the director Dennis Villeneuve show the crafty nature of the war against drugs and its insidious infiltration in the nature of both sides.
