4990 - TOP SECRET (1984)

 

TOP SECRET – SUPERCONFIDENCIAL (TOP SECRET, USA, 1984) – Como misturar os filmes de Elvis Presley com o nazismo? O trio ZAZ conseguiu e com o brilhantismo de sempre. TOP SECRET é uma das melhores comédias nonsense já realizadas, ao lado de AIRPLANE e THE NAKED GUN,  recheada de referências pop, e conta com um elenco que dificilmente se reuniria numa comédia deste tipo: Omar Sharif, Peter Cushing e Val Kilmer (no primeiro papel da sua carreira de 82 filmes). As gags visuais são obras de arte, além dos diálogos repletos de referências pop e algumas alterações narrativas geniais, como a câmera reversa na cena da loja com Peter Cushing. Possivelmente, TP não seria entendido atualmente pelas novas gerações, que precisam de um tipo de humor menos complexo e sem sutilezas. How to mix Elvis Presley's films with Nazism? The ZAZ trio did it, and with the usual brilliance. TOP SECRET is one of the best nonsense comedies ever made, alongside AIRPLANE and THE NAKED GUN, and is full of pop references and has a cast that would hardly come together in a comedy of this type: Omar Sharif, Peter Cushing and Val Kilmer (in the first role of his career of 82 films). The visual gags are a work of art, in addition to the dialogues full of pop references and some genius narrative changes, such as the reverse camera in the store scene with Peter Cushing. Possibly, TP would not be understood today by the new generations, who need a less complex and less subtle type of humor.

4989 - CHEERS - TEMP 7 - 22 EPISÓDIOS (1988)

CHEERS – TEMP 7 – 22 EPISÓDIOS (CHEERS, USA, 1988) – Definitivamente, no lugar mais alto da minha lista de melhores séries de todos os tempos, CHEERS tem um altíssimo valor afetivo misturado com a qualidade insofismável dos roteiros e do elenco. Nesta sétima temporada, atenção para os seguintes episódios clássicos: Executive Sweet (7/3), com Rebecca tendo que lidar com as investidas de Mr. Teal, seu novo chefe, How to win friends and electrocute people, no qual Cliff usa um gadget elétrico acionado por seu médico, quando se mostra desagradável; The Cranemakers (7/16), mostrando Frasier e Lilith encantados pelo nascimento do filho e indo viver longe da civilização, até se darem conta de que são urbanites; The visiting lecher (7/22), em que um amigo de Frasier, Dr. Crandell, dá em cima de Rebecca, achando que ela está interessada nele. Definitely, at the top of my list of the best series of all time, CHEERS has a very high affective value mixed with the unmistakable quality of the scripts and the cast. In this seventh season, attention to the following classic episodes: Executive Sweet (7/3), with Rebecca having to deal with the advances of Mr. Teal, her new boss, How to win friends and electrocute people, in which Cliff uses an electric gadget activated by his doctor, when he proves to be unpleasant; The Cranemakers (7/16), showing Frasier and Lilith enchanted by the birth of their son and going to live far from civilization, until they realize that they are urbanites; The visiting lecher (7/22), in which Frasier's friend, Dr. Crandell, hits on Rebecca, thinking she is interested in him.

4988 - BUGONIA (2025)

 

BUGONIA (USA, 2025) – Com sua raiz no grego, a palavra “bugonia” refere-se a um antigo ritual agrário, segundo o qual haveria uma geração espontânea de abelhas a partir da carcaça em decomposição de um boi ou vaca. O filme é um produto característico de Yorgos Lanthimos: ousado, heterodoxo, desconfortável e, claro, também original na sua proposta narrativa. Michelle (Emma Stone) é a CEO de uma empresa farmacêutica e é sequestrada por dois homens (um deles, Jesse Plemons, que ainda não me convenceu de que é um ator com talento), motivados pela crença de que ela é uma alienígena que poderia salvar a Terra. Aqui, temos uma mistura de humor sombrio, paranoia e horror psicológico, elementos que poderiam se dissipar numa análise de um possível desfecho preguiçoso, meio estilizado e decepcionante, ou uma jogada magistral de um diretor caracterizado por soluções incomuns. A abordagem apícola do desenho de produção – evidenciada nos cenários onde formas hexagonais se repetem até formarem algo semelhante a uma colmeia – pode representar o renascimento, a renovação e  emergência da vida a partir da decadência física e moral, refletindo a antiga crença de que a morte pode dar início a uma nova humanidade depois de atingir o colapso social e ambiental. Além disso, os personagens, de certa forma, agem como apicultores preocupados em proteger uma espécie nos seus estertores (a humanidade), quando o meio ambiente já se encontra praticamente destruído. Afinal, as abelhas nos lembram do delicado equilíbrio da natureza e das severas consequências da exploração irracional do planeta. With its roots in Greek, the word "bugonia" refers to an ancient agrarian ritual, according to which there would be a spontaneous generation of bees from the decaying carcass of an ox or cow. The film is a characteristic product of Yorgos Lanthimos: daring, unorthodox, uncomfortable and, of course, also original in its narrative proposal. Michelle (Emma Stone) is the CEO of a pharmaceutical company and is kidnapped by two men (one of them, Jesse Plemons, who still hasn't convinced me of being a talented actor), motivated by the belief that she is an alien who could save Earth. Here, there is a mixture of dark humor, paranoia and psychological horror, elements that could dissipate through an analysis of a possible lazy, somewhat stylized, and disappointing outcome, or a masterful move by a director characterized by unusual solutions. The beekeeping approach to production design – evidenced in the scenarios where hexagonal shapes repeat until they form something resembling a beehive – can represent the rebirth, renewal and emergence of life from physical and moral decay, reflecting the ancient belief that death can usher in a new humanity after reaching social and environmental collapse. In addition, the characters, in a way, act like beekeepers concerned with protecting a species in its death throes (humanity), when the environment is already practically destroyed. After all, bees remind us of the delicate balance of nature and the severe consequences of irrational exploitation of the planet.

4987 - HOMELAND - TEMP 1 - 12 EPISÓDIOS (2011)

 

HOMELAND – TEMP 1 – 12 EPISÓDIOS (HOMELAND, USA, 2011) - O maior mérito da primeira temporada é manter o espectador constantemente dividido sobre a verdadeira identidade e lealdade de Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis). Após oito anos de cativeiro no Iraque, ele retorna aos Estados Unidos como herói nacional, mas a agente da CIA Carrie Mathison (Caire Danes) suspeita que tenha sido convertido por terroristas. Em vez de apresentar um vilão evidente, constrói um personagem complexo, traumatizado e contraditório, que pode ter se tornado outra pessoa após a guerra. O suspense não depende apenas da pergunta "Brody é culpado?", mas também de "quem ele se tornou após a guerra. A interpretação de Claire Danes como Carrie Mathison se destaca – seu personagem é brilhante, obsessivo, impulsivo e emocionalmente vulnerável. A série retrata seu transtorno bipolar sem reduzi-la a um estereótipo. Sua condição psicológica afeta seu trabalho, mas também está ligada à sua capacidade de perceber padrões que os outros ignoram. The greatest merit of the first season is to keep the viewer constantly divided about the true identity and loyalty of Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis). After eight years of captivity in Iraq, he returns to the United States as a national hero, but CIA agent Carrie Mathison (Caire Danes) suspects he has been converted by terrorists. Instead of presenting an obvious villain, he builds a complex, traumatized and contradictory character, who may have become someone else after the war. The suspense doesn't just hinge on the question "Is Brody guilty?" but also on "who he became after the war. Claire Danes' portrayal of Carrie Mathison stands out – her character is brilliant, obsessive, impulsive, and emotionally vulnerable. The series portrays her bipolar disorder without reducing it to a stereotype. Her psychological condition affects her work, but it's also linked to her ability to notice patterns that others ignore. This complexity gives rare depth to a thriller protagonist. The season reflects the anxieties of the United States after the 2001 attacks. Instead of simply reproducing patriotic speeches, it questions topics such as: state surveillance, the war on terror, collective paranoia, the ethical limits of intelligence; psychological consequences of war. In this sense, Homeland works both as a political thriller and a case study. Damian Lewis transforms Nick Brody into a complex character who can be the victim, hero, traitor, and family man. The actor manages to convey genuine suffering without completely revealing the character's intentions, a fundamental element for the season's suspense. Unmissable.

4986 - UMA MENINA SILENCIOSA (2022)

UMA MENINA SILENCIOSA (AN CAILÍN CIÚIN, Irlanda, 2022) – A narrativa acompanha Cait, uma menina introvertida e tímida que é enviada para passar o verão na casa de parentes distantes em uma zona rural da Irlanda. A interação com essa nova família, especialmente com um casal de meia-idade, vai, lentamente, abrir caminhos para que Cait se conecte com suas emoções e se sinta mais segura e amada. O filme se destaca por sua abordagem intimista, onde o silêncio não é apenas ausência de palavras, mas um espaço carregado de significado e sensibilidade. A atuação da jovem atriz (Caitríona Ní Mhurchú) é muito natural e convincente, transmitindo muito da narrativa pelas expressões e gestos, em vez de diálogos extensos. A direção e a fotografia também são muito cuidadosas, usando a paisagem irlandesa como um elemento quase vivo, que contribui para a atmosfera introspectiva. A SILENT GIRL (AN CAILÍN CIÚIN, Ireland, 2022) – The narrative follows Cait, an introverted and shy girl who is sent to spend the summer at the home of distant relatives in a rural area of Ireland. The interaction with this new family, especially with a middle-aged couple, will slowly open up ways for Cait to connect with her emotions and feel more secure and loved. The film stands out for its intimate approach, where silence is not just the absence of words, but a space loaded with meaning and sensitivity. The performance of the young actress (Caitríona Ní Mhurchú) is very natural and convincing, conveying much of the narrative through expressions and gestures, rather than extensive dialogues. The direction and photography are also very careful, using the Irish landscape as an almost living element, which contributes to the introspective atmosphere. What makes the film especially touching is its delicate look at childhood difficulties and emotional resilience. The way the film deals with Cait's selective mutism and her emotional growth process is done in a respectful way, avoiding easy sentimentality. It is a work that invites the viewer to slow down, observe and feel, valuing the internal look and the emotional world of children in a very human way. In short, it is a poetic, soft film with a sensitive treatment of relevant themes such as belonging, silence and overcoming emotional wounds. 4985 - OBSESSÃO (2025)

 OBSESSÃO (OBSSESSION, USA, 2025) – Bear (Michael Johnston) é apaixonado por Nikki (Inde Navarrette), mas é muito tímido para se declarar. Por meios mágicos, Bear usa de um encantamento para realizar seu sonho: fazê-la apaixonada por ele. Como quase todas as histórias de amor tórrido, o namoro vai se transformando em terror. Contudo, o roteiro usa de uma artimanha, a princípio nada original, mas que funciona – a inserção de comédia em uma trama sombria. Não é o terrir de Sam Raimi. É algo mais elaborado, a partir, principalmente, da extensão das cenas, que podem ocupar longos segundos quando o esperado é uma edição mais frenética. OBSESSÃO trata de um relacionamento tóxico levado aos estertores da relação dominador x dominado. No sentido diegético, não há jump scares, e sim a condução de um interesse quase mórbido do espectador pelas razões das atitudes dos personagens principais. Bear (Michael Johnston) is in love with Nikki (Inde Navarrette), but is too shy to declare himself. By magical means, Bear uses an incantation to make his dream come true: to make her fall in love with him. Like almost all torrid love stories, courtship turns into terror. However, the script uses a trick, at first unoriginal, but which works – the insertion of comedy in a dark plot. It's not Sam Raimi's terrir. It is something more elaborate, mainly based on the length of the scenes, which can occupy long seconds when a more frenetic editing is expected. OBSESSION deals with a toxic relationship taken to the death throes of the dominator x dominated relationship. In the diegetic sense, there are no jump scares, but the driving of an almost morbid interest of the viewer in the reasons for the attitudes of the main characters.

4984 - A PASSAGEM (2005)

 A PASSAGEM (STAY, USA, 2005) – Embora classificado como um drama, STAY vai muito além disso, especialmente quando insere o componente de mistério numa trama que envolve, a princípio, a tentativa de um psiquiatra de demover um paciente da ideia de se suicidar. Os dois protagonistas, Ewan McGregor (Sam, o psiquiatra) e Ryan Gosling (Henry, o paciente) fazem um interessante contraponto entre o que é realidade e o que não é. Há uma importante referência a Shakespeare no roteiro: Hamlet é ensaiada pela namorada de Henry, cujo sobrenome, “Letham”, um anagrama de “Hamlet”, já dá uma clara indicação dos caminhos a serem seguidos pelo diretor Mark Foster. Aliás, “foster”, sobrenome de Sam, é aquele que cuida, que dá proteção, no lugar do pai e da mãe – e é assim o relacionamento de Sam com Henry, já que seu pai morre, juntamente com a mãe e a namorada, num acidente de carro, na ponte do Brooklyn, na primeira sequência do filme. Henry é o único sobrevivente, e isso acarretará uma culpa da qual ele não consegue se livrar. STAY é um filme sobre como (não) lidamos com a culpa, sobre solidão, medo e os limites entre realidade e sonho, coisa que a estranha edição e montagem aparentemente anárquica emergem do filme como um abalo sísmico na nossa forma de ver o mundo. Isso é corroborado, quando o pai de Henry (o ótimo Bob Hoskins) lhe diz: “O mundo é uma ilusão”, e quando aparecem citações de um suposto pintor francês, inventado por Henry e chamado Rêveur (“sonhador” em francês). Poder-se-ia admitir semelhanças com CORAÇÃO SATÂNICO e O SEXTO SENTIDO, mas STAY parece ir além disso, ao sugerir sutilmente (talvez nem tanto) que pensemos em como será o nosso último momento de vida, aquele em que a brisa fria da morte nos acariciar os cabelos. THE PASSAGE (STAY, USA, 2005) – Although classified as a drama, STAY goes far beyond that, especially when it inserts the mystery component in a plot that involves, at first, a psychiatrist's attempt to dissuade a patient from the idea of committing suicide. The two protagonists, Ewan McGregor (Sam, the psychiatrist) and Ryan Gosling (Henry, the patient) make an interesting counterpoint between what is reality and what is not. There is an important reference to Shakespeare in the script: Hamlet is rehearsed by Henry's girlfriend, and "Letham", his surname, an anagram for "Hamlet", already gives a clear indication of the paths to be followed by director Mark Foster. By the way, "foster", Sam's last name, is the one who cares, who gives protection, in place of his father and mother – and that's Sam's relationship with Henry, since his father dies, along with his mother and girlfriend, in a car accident, on the Brooklyn Bridge, in the first sequence of the film. Henry is the only survivor, and this will entail a guilt that he cannot extricate himself from. STAY is a film about how we (don't) deal with guilt, about loneliness, fear, and the limits between reality and dream, something that the strange and apparently anarchic editing emerges from the film as a seismic shock in our way of seeing the world. This is corroborated when Henry's father (the great Bob Hoskins) tells him: "The world is an illusion", and when quotes appear from a supposed French painter, invented by Henry and called Rêveur ("dreamer" in French). One could admit similarities with ANGEL HEART and THE SIXTH SENSE, but STAY seems to go beyond that, by subtly suggesting (perhaps not so much) that we think about what our last moment of life will be like, the one in which the cold breeze of death caresses our hair.

4983 - A NOIVA (2026)

 

A NOIVA (THE BRIDE, USA, 2025) – O filme é uma homenagem a A NOIVA DE FRANKENSTEIN, DE 1935, com Boris Karloff e Elsa Lanchester, com a trama levada a Chicago da década de 30. É uma proposta ousada, meio alternativa, que só dois grandes atores como Jessie Buckley e Christian Bale seriam capazes de realizar. O roteiro irregular sofre com uma trama desconectada, um pouco pueril na tentativa de fazer uma crítica social com referências a filmes famosos (METRÓPOLIS, de Fritz Lang e JOVEM FRANKENSTEIN, de Mel Brooks, além de musicais da Metro e Bonnie & Clyde) e pontuada com mecanismos emancipatórios femininos numa sociedade claramente machista e perpassada pela ação dos gangsteres da época. Jessie Buckley – ganhadora do Oscar de Melhor Atriz este ano com HAMNET – tem um papel talhado para sua linha de atuação: histriônico, barulhento, apostando na fisicalidade de um personagem tão icônico como o monstro de Frankenstein de Bale. A criatura, como no filme seminal, está a procura de uma companheira, e a encontra como seu contraponto anímico: ele é sensível e romântico, enquanto ela é dominadora e agressiva, numa quase troca de papéis tradicionais masculinos e femininos.  Esse blending coloca, por vezes a narrativa numa trajetória confusa, dificultando o engajamento do espectador. A direção de Maggie Gyllenhaal é um tanto errática, pesando a mão em algumas sequências, como a da dança meio Elaine Banes na boate. E mais: depois que os pombinhos são soltos no mundo, tudo no filme parece desconexo, sem espaço para mais explicações ou simples contemplação, o que deixa o espectador perdido na trama. Por exemplo: por que Frank é obcecado por musicais do cinema, cujo protagonista é Roonie Reed (Jake Gyllenhaal), ou por que os detetives estão procurando Ida, a prostituta morta que dá origem à noiva? Esse e outros aspectos se perdem num torvelhinho frenético, em função da cinematografia pretensamente impactante. A Noiva fica no meio do caminho entre a comédia sutil e o terror mediano, sem ser na realidade nenhum dos dois, como uma criatura sem identidade, criada em meio ao caos criativo do filme. THE BRIDE (USA, 2025) – The film is a tribute to THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN, from 1935, with Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester, with the plot taken to Chicago in the 30s. It's a daring, somewhat alternative proposal, which only two great actors like Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale would be able to accomplish. The irregular script suffers from a disconnected plot, a little puerile in an attempt to make a social critique with references to famous films (Metropolis, by Fritz Lang and YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, by Mel Brooks, as well as musicals by Metro and Bonnie & Clyde) and punctuated with female emancipatory mechanisms in a clearly sexist society permeated by the action of the gangsters of the time. Jessie Buckley – winner of the Oscar for Best Actress this year with HAMNET – has a role tailored to her line of acting: histrionic, noisy, betting on the physicality of a character as iconic as Bale's Frankenstein monster. The creature, as in the seminal film, is looking for a mate, and finds her as his soul counterpoint: he is sensitive and romantic, while she is domineering and aggressive, in an almost exchange of traditional male and female roles. This blending sometimes puts the narrative on a confusing trajectory, making it difficult for the viewer to engage. Maggie Gyllenhaal's direction is somewhat erratic, overdoing in some sequences, such as the Elaine Banes-like dance in the nightclub. What's more: after the lovebirds are released into the world, everything in the film seems disconnected, with no room for further explanation or simple contemplation, which leaves the viewer confused likewise. For example: why is Frank obsessed with movie musicals, whose protagonist is Roonie Reed (Jake Gyllenhaal), or why are the detectives pursuing Ida, the dead prostitute who gives birth to the bride? This and other aspects are lost in a frenetic whirlwind, due to the allegedly impactful cinematography. The Bride is halfway between subtle comedy and average horror, without actually being either, as a creature without identity, created in the midst of the creative chaos of the film. HBO Max.

4982 - FOME DE AMOR (2968)

 

FOME DE AMOR (Brasil, 1968) – O filme de Nelson Pereira dos Santos é uma alegoria típica das produções do período da ditadura militar no Brasil e em vários países da América do Sul, com personagens tipificados de acordo com os estratos sociais, numa forma de criticar o sistema fechado dos anos de chumbo. No entanto, o roteiro é confuso e as atuações erráticas e aparentemente sem propósito para a trama. Paulo Porto tem um personagem secundário, Arduíno Colasanti não sabe atuar, e apenas Leila Dinis e Irene Stefânia aduzem algo próximo de uma linha dramática. Nelson Pereira dos Santos' film is a typical allegory of the productions of the period of the military dictatorship in Brazil and in several South American countries, with characters typified according to social strata, in a way of criticizing the closed system of the years of lead. However, the script is confusing, and the performances are erratic and seemingly purposeless to the plot. THE BIG C – TEMP 1 – 13 EPISÓDIOS (USA, 2010) – Cathy Jameson (Laura Linney, numa atuação estupenda, como sempre, aliás) é uma dona de casa que recebe um diagnóstico de câncer e mergulha numa pletora de emoções, na medida em que procura conviver com a doença e com o marido (Oliver Platt), o filho adolescente (Gabriel Basso) e o irmão naturalista (John Benjamin Hickey). Já adianto: a série não tem nada de depressiva, apesar do tema, e é conduzida com extremo bom humor deslizando sobre um roteiro arguto e, ao mesmo tempo, bittersweet e encantadoramente leve. Porém, há momentos em que o humor se encontra com a tragédia, e é exatamente aí o grande diferencial de THE BIG C: ela nos faz refletir sobre o que é realmente essencial na vida, sobre a importância das relações pessoais e o valor de viver o aqui e agora. Imperdível. Cathy Jameson (Laura Linney, in a stupendous performance, as always, by the way) is a housewife who receives a cancer diagnosis and plunges into a plethora of emotions, as she tries to live with the disease and with her husband (Oliver Platt), teenage son (Gabriel Basso) and naturalist brother (John Benjamin Hickey). I'll tell you in advance: the series is not depressive at all, despite the theme, and is conducted with extreme good humor sliding over a shrewd script and, at the same time, bittersweet and charmingly light. However, there are times when humor meets tragedy, and that's exactly where THE BIG C makes us reflect on what is really essential in life, on the importance of personal relationships and the value of living in the here and now. 4980 - ESQUEÇA PARIS (1995)

 

ESQUEÇA PARIS (FORGET PARIS, USA, 1995) – Este filme escrito e dirigido por Billy Crystal é exemplo das melhores comédias dos anos 90 – bom roteiro, excelentes atuações de Crystal (Mickey), Debra Winger (Ellen) e do ótimo elenco de apoio, com Joe Mantegna e Cynthia Stevenson, e, além de tudo engraçadíssimo. De certa forma, a direção e a história nos remetem aos filmes de Woody Allen, nos quais a discussões sobre os problemas dos relacionamentos amorosos se sobressaem quase como um personagem com vida própria. A história de Mickey e Ellen é contada por diversos personagens à mesa de um restaurante, numa chave diagética original e habilmente executada. This movie, written and directed by Billy Crystal, is an example of the best comedies of the 90s – good script, excellent performances by Crystal (Mickey), Debra Winger (Ellen), and the great supporting cast, with Joe Mantegna and Cynthia Stevenson, and, above all, very funny. In a way, the direction and the story remind us of Woody Allen's films, in which discussions about the problems of love relationships stand out almost like a character with a life of its own. The story of Mickey and Ellen is told by several characters at a restaurant table, in an original and skillfully executed diagnostic key. HBO Max.

4979 - ALIEN, O OITAVO PASSAGEIRO (1979)

Ray Milland se entrega ao papel que talvez seja o mais importante da sua vida (certamente não é o médico louco e racista de O MONSTRO DE DUAS CABEÇAS (1972), onde tem a sua cabeça transplantada para o corpo de um homem negro (Rooselvet Grier, primo da deusa Pam). A direção e o roteiro de Wilder abordam o assunto de maneira séria, pela primeira vez, numa época em que o alcoolismo era tratado como gancho cômico no cinema. Milland dá gravitas ao papel de um homem degradado pela bebida, numa dimensão só alcançada décadas depois com Nicolas Cage, em LEAVING LAS VEGAS, cujo personagem se propõe a beber até morrer. Billy Wilder's film courageously tackles alcoholism, an uncommon theme in the 40s. JUVENTUDE TRANSVIADA (REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE, USA, 1955) – Certos aspectos do roteiro ficaram datados, mas, emocionalmente, o filme ainda encontra forças para estabelecer conexões com as gerações mais novas – tanto cronológica quanto etariamente. O filme de Nicholas Ray (REI DOS REIS, de 1961) fez de James Dean um template para a juventude rebelde em todo o mundo, em conformidade com os padrões sociais e morais da América do pós-guerra, principalmente expondo a falsa pudicícia da classe média (não só ela, claro). O trio da história, Natalie Wood, James Dean e Sal Mineo transmite um compadrio além da tela, não fosse o fato de os três terem perdido a vida em circunstâncias violentas. O fato é: dali surgiu, pela primeira vez, o conceito de uma juventude rebelde, iconoclasta em relação aos valores dos pais, o que era impensável até o final dos anos 40. Certamente, esta geração sofreu as consequências do pós-guerra, entre as quais se sobressaem o desencanto com os padrões rígidos da sociedade e um questionamento das então expectativas draconianas dos pais em relação aos filhos. Certain aspects of the script have become dated, but emotionally, the film still finds the strength to establish connections with the younger generations, both chronologically and agedly. Nicholas Ray's film (KING OF KINGS, 1961) made James Dean a template for rebellious youth around the world, in accordance with the social and moral standards of post-war America, mainly exposing the false prudishness of the middle class (not only it, of course). The trio of the story, Natalie Wood, James Dean, and Sal Mineo convey a camaraderie beyond the screen, were it not for the fact that the three lost their lives in violent circumstances. The fact is: from there emerged, for the first time, the concept of a rebellious youth, iconoclastic in relation to the values of their parents, which was unthinkable until the end of the 40s. TWO AND A HALF MEN – TEMP 4 (USA, 2007) – Esta é uma das melhores temporadas de TAHM, com episódios engraçadíssimos, especialmente o último, no qual Evelyn termina com Teddy, para o desespero de Charlie e Alan, que passaram a adorá-lo, depois que ele os levou a Las Vegas para uma farra com picolés e prostitutas. A sequência final, com Evelyn e seu novo namorado, Hugo (Mike Connors, de Mannix), sendo surpreendidos por C e A é simplesmente antológica, principalmente pela atuação de Holland Taylor. This is one of the best seasons of TAHM, with very funny episodes, especially the last one, in which Evelyn breaks up with Teddy, much to the dismay of Charlie and Alan, who have come to adore him, after he took them to Las Vegas for a spree with popsicles and prostitutes. The final sequence, with Evelyn and her new boyfriend, Hugo (Mike Connors, from Mannix), being surprised by C and A is simply anthological, especially for Holland Taylor's performance. 

4974 - O ULTIMATO BOURNE (2007)

O ULTIMATO BOURNE (THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, USA, 2007) - Aqui temos uma daquelas raras franquias que ficam cada vez melhores. A grande notícia é que o diretor Paul Greengrass está de volta e, diga-se, melhor do que nunca. Ele traz mais realismo e técnica nesta sequência do que no filme anterior. Matt Damon envelheceu e se envolveu no personagem de forma mais perfeita, a ponto de parecer viver o papel e realisticamente o personagem. Não consigo imaginar mais ninguém no papel neste momento. David Strathairn é simplesmente magnífico, e Julia Stiles está surpreendentemente excelente. As sequências de perseguição estão entre as melhores, e goste ou não da shaky cam, ela faz exatamente o que é necessário e nos lugares certos. A intenção é ficar na mesma vibe, enquanto assiste ao filme, o que é exatamente o objetivo. O objetivo é sentir e experimentar o que Jason Bourne está vivendo. A cinematografia funciona brilhantemente. Here we have one of those rare franchises that constantly gets better and better. The great thing about it is that Director Paul Greengrass is back and better than ever. He brings more realism and technique in this sequel than he did in the last film. Matt Damon has gotten older and into the character more perfectly to where he seems to be living the role and realistically the character. I can't really picture anyone else in the role at this point. David Strathairn is just magnificent, and Julia Stiles was surprisingly quite excellent. The chase sequences are some of the best, and they like it or hate the shaky cinematography – it does exactly what is necessary and right on point. The intent is to be agitated as you watch the film, which is exactly the point. The intent is to feel and experience what Jason Bourne is experiencing and feeling. The cinematography technique works brilliantly.

 

4973 - O CHACAL (1997)

 

O CHACAL (THE JACKAL, USA, 1997) – O filme de Michel Caton-Jones, mesmo depois de tantos anos, ainda chama atenção principalmente pelo elenco estrelado, apesar dos furos do roteiro que, hoje, não passariam tão desconsiderados como o foram na época. A presença de Sidney Poitier, na sua última atuação, evidentemente, faz qualquer filme valer a pena, não? Richard Gere e Bruce Willis, como antagonistas, parecem estrelar sozinhos seus próprios filmes, já que só contracenam na sequência final – parece ficar evidente a antipatia entre os dois quando estão frente a frente, e isso dá uma certa autenticidade à atuação dos dois. Aliás, em virtude da atual situação de saúde de Willis, vê-lo atuando neste filme é indizivelmente emocionante. Mesmo levando em consideração as falhas do roteiro, O CHACAL (refilmagem de O DIA DO CHACAL, baseado no romance de Frederick Forsyth) ainda é um bom thriller policial, principalmente por causa de seu trio de protagonistas. THE JACKAL (USA, 1997) – Michel Caton-Jones' film, even after so many years, still draws attention mainly for the star-studded cast, despite the holes in the script that, today, would not go as unnoticed as they were at the time. The presence of Sidney Poitier, in his last performance, evidently makes any film worthwhile, doesn't it? Richard Gere and Bruce Willis, as antagonists, seem to star alone in their own films, as they only act together in the final sequence – the friction between the two seems to be evident when they are face-to-face, and this gives a certain authenticity to their performance. In fact, given Willis' current health situation, seeing him acting in this film is unspeakably exciting. Even considering the flaws of the script, THE JACKAL (remake of THE DAY OF THE JACKAL, based on the novel by Frederick Forsyth) is still a good crime thriller, mainly because of its trio of protagonists.

A SUPREMACIA BOURNE (THE BOURNE SUPREMACY, USA, 2004) – Um aspecto interessante da série com Jason Bourne, cada vez em que é revisitada, é a impressão de que a assistimos pela primeira vez. Aqui, a direção de Paul Greengrass imprime um ritmo alucinante, sem perder o fluxo tensional de uma história, no macrocosmo, sobre a busca da identidade – algo com que facilmente nos relacionamos. Matt Demon é obrigatório: sua expressão facial se transforma num quadro amplo da sua angústia em função da falta das memórias afetivas que, em certa medida, dão sentido à vida. Mesmo as lembranças atuais acabam se tornando um peso, quando uma tragédia lhe rouba a melhor razão para ele continuar acreditando numa vida mais próxima do normal. An interesting aspect of the series with Jason Bourne, each time it is revisited, is the impression that we watched it for the first time. Here, Paul Greengrass's direction imprints a breakneck pace, without losing the tensional flow of a story, in the macrocosm, about the search for identity – something with which we easily relate. Matt Damon is mandatory: his facial expression becomes a broad picture of his anguish due to the lack of affective memories that, to a certain extent, give meaning to life. O GUARDA-COSTAS (THE BODYGUARD, USA, 1992) – Este é um filme em que tudo deu certo, quando o conjunto da obra parecia apontar para um fracasso inevitável. Está ali – de uma forma talvez involuntária – algo que atrai nossa atenção logo de início. Afinal, quem não precisa de proteção neste mundo? Este, a meu ver, é o principal apelo de um roteiro previsível e, convenhamos, bem pouco original. Mas nada disso importa diante da química entre Kevin Costner e Whitney Houston (“Houston, temos um problema”), uma trilha sonora pra lá de melosa e, especialmente para mim, a presença de Ralph Waite – o patriarca de OS WALTONS -, também aqui vivendo a figura paterna de Costner. Ele poderia ter tido mais tempo em cena, mas arrasa na sequência da casa no campo, para onde Costner e Houston vão depois das ameaças começarem a escalar. O GUARDA-COSTA invoca um sentimento primal atrelado à necessidade de se proteger instintivamente de um perigo iminente, mas nem sempre definido, sensação mais comum hoje do que seria o normal (aqui, abre-se a discussão sobre o que é ou não normal). This is a film in which everything worked out, when the body of work seemed to point to an inevitable failure. There is something that attracts our attention right from the start. After all, who doesn't need protection in this world? This, in my view, is the main appeal of a predictable and, let's face it, very unoriginal script. But none of that matters in the face of the chemistry between Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston (“Houston, we have a problem"), a very mellow soundtrack and, especially for me, the presence of Ralph Waite – the patriarch of THE WALTONS – also here playing Costner's father figure. He could have had more time on the scene, but he rocks in the sequence at the country house, where Costner and Houston go after the threats start to escalate. The BODYGUARD invokes a primal feeling linked to the need to instinctively protect oneself from an imminent, but not always defined, danger, a sensation more common today than would be normal (here, the discussion about what is or is not normal is opened). 4970 - A IDENTIDADE BOURNE (2002)

 

A IDENTIDADE BOURNE (THE BOURNE IDENTITY, USA, 2002) – Uma das grandes qualidades deste primeiro filme é uma proposta instigante: por que temos necessidade de saber quem somos, de buscar uma identidade e, destarte, a sensação de pertencimento? O personagem de Matt Demon (um ator obrigatório, registre-se) passa essa necessidade de buscar suas raízes e ressignificar sua existência, o que a maioria de nós tenta fazer na vida, de uma forma ou de outra. Isso constitui um pilar essencial na trama, porque se trata de descobrir sua identidade para se tornar livre de um passado que ele vai conhecendo aos poucos, na medida em que seu retorno passa a representar um perigo para a organização em que trabalha, por motivos que serão esclarecidos nos filmes subsequentes. Claro que o alto nível de comprometimento de Franka Potente ajuda muito nesta empreitada. One of the great qualities of this first film is a thought-provoking proposal: why do we need to know who we are, to search for an identity and, thus, the feeling of belonging? Matt Demon's character (a mandatory actor, for the record) conveys this need to seek his roots and give another sense to his existence, which most of us try to accomplish in life, in one way or another. This constitutes an essential pillar in the plot, because it is about discovering his identity in order to become free of a past that he gradually gets to know, as his return comes to represent a danger to the organization in which he works, for reasons that will be clarified in subsequent films. Of course, Franka Potente's high level of commitment helps a lot in this endeavor. Netflix.

4969 - PASSAGEIROS (2016)

  PASSAGEIROS (PASSENGERS, USA, 2016) – Sempre bem colocado na minha lista de filmes favoritos, PASSAGEIROS é uma ficção científica que, no fundo, é uma das mais belas histórias de amor já vistas nesta e em outras galáxias. O que você faria se estivesse sozinho numa espaçonave a caminho de um planeta distante a alguns anos-luz dali? Claro, procuraria um meio de ter como companhia uma mulher inteligente e linda. É exatamente isso que Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) faz, afinal, não em qualquer data estelar que alguém encontra Jennifer Lawrence no papel de uma escritora com o sugestivo nome de Aurora Lane. Assim, os dois vão se descobrindo, mas não sem antes haver uma resistência intempestiva da parte dela, quando descobre que foi “acordada” por Jim. Há momentos de uma beleza intangível, como na sequência de Aurora nadando na piscina da nave, com as estrelas de fundo, ou quando Jim a encontra para um jantar romântico, tendo apenas o bartender robô Arthur (Michael Sheen), uma mistura de ombro amigo e filósofo de balcão, apesar do pouco tempo em cena, como testemunha. A cinematografia é linda, assim como os atores e a mensagem final; e o roteiro acerta quando expande a discussão da temporalidade x atemporalidade e na constatação de que a vida, em todas as suas alegrias e tristezas, descobertas e frustrações, só pode mesmo ser vivida no presente. Always well placed on my list of favorite movies, PASSENGERS is a science fiction that, deep down, is one of the most beautiful love stories ever seen in this and other galaxies. What would you do if you were alone in a spaceship on your way to a distant planet a few light-years away? Of course, you would look for a way to have an intelligent and gorgeous woman for company. That's exactly what Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) does, after all, it's not on any star date that anyone finds Jennifer Lawrence in the role of a writer with the suggestive name of Aurora Lane. Thus, the two discover each other, but not before there is untimely resistance on her part, when she finds out that she was "woken up" by Jim. There are moments of intangible beauty, as in the sequence of Aurora swimming in the ship's pool, with the stars in the background, or when Jim meets her for a romantic dinner, with only the robot bartender Arthur (Michael Sheen), a mixture of shoulder friend and philosopher at the counter, despite the short time on stage, as a witness. The story is impressively current, portraying the tensions between Israel and Palestine and bringing to the discussion a family drama in which the two sides equalize in their perception of the world: the husband, who did not suspect his wife's participation in resistance groups; and the woman whose life took on another meaning, when she realized the injustices suffered by the Palestinian people. The dry, almost suffocating climate of the landscapes leads us to a deep involvement with the pain of the husband who loses his wife unexpectedly, and with his attempt to understand the reasons that led her to this radical act. The film captures his internal struggle, and the problems and paradoxes of his life may symbolize the conflicts between Israel and Palestine that resulted, in the present day, in the genocide of the Palestinian people.

A América estava abalada pelo envolvimento na guerra do Vietnã, escândalos na Casa Branca e desobediência civil. Os programas populares da época eram programas de talk show e variedades em horário nobre, e 'All in the Family' estava definindo o tom para a TV de ponta. Apesar disso, 'The Waltons' estreou e rapidamente formou um público que acompanhou as 9 temporadas, 6 especiais de filmes e um lugar em nossa consciência coletiva que perdura há décadas.       AMOR E MORTE – 7 EPISÓDIOS (LOVE AND DEATH, USA, 2023) – Candy (Elizabeth Olsen), uma dona de casa infeliz no casamento, decide ter um caso com um amigo, Allan (Jesse Plemons), também casado, ambos membros de uma igreja numa cidadezinha do Texas. Esse argumento dá início a uma análise arguta (para quem presta atenção) da natureza das igrejas evangélicas e sua influência deletéria em uma comunidade sem muito apreço pela honestidade. Os personagens, em geral, são levados por um código de conduta, digamos, bem maleável, no que diz respeito às consequências de suas ações – é o caso de Candy, quando seduz Allan (uma aparente não atuação de Plemons, num personagem totalmente desprovido de emoção) e, assim, desencadeia uma série de fatos que resultam num desfecho previsível para o adultério, bem ao estilo true crime. Mas é nos episódios finais que os processos jurídicos se interligam com uma certa equalização ética que mistura provincianismo e misticismo religioso. Elizabeth Olsen confirma seu talento dramático num personagem bem distante de Wandavision. Há um filme na HULO, com a mesma história, com Jessica Biel, mas sem a profundidade dramática e a exploração do contexto social vistas aqui. But it is in the final episodes that the legal processes are intertwined with an ethical equalization that blends provincialism and religious mysticism. Elizabeth Olsen confirms her dramatic talent in a character way far from WandaVision. There's a movie at HULO, with the same story, with Jessica Biel, but without the dramatic depth and exploration of the social context seen here. Netflix. 

4965 - REDE DE INTRIGAS (1976)

  

REDE DE INTRIGAS (NETWORK, USA, 1976) – Um âncora famoso e popular, Howard Beale (Peter Finch), diante do aviso de que vai ser demitido – a audiência do noticiário que ele apresenta está caindo a cada dia – anuncia no ar que vai se matar diante das câmeras dali a duas semanas. A princípio, a direção da emissora fica em polvorosa, mas percebe que a popularidade do programa aumenta a cada dia e resolve manter Beale no ar, dando a ele liberdade para falar o que quiser. Este excelente filme de Sidney Lumet é premonitório em vários aspectos, principalmente na instrumentalização da desgraça humana para fins lucrativos e na manipulação da audiência dos programas de TV. O personagem de Faye Dunaway, Diana Christiansen, uma executiva da emissora, sempre ávida pelos números da audiência, disposta a tudo para atingir seus objetivos (é dela a ideia de manter Beale no ar) tem uma importância fulcral, pois evidencia a desumanização da empresa, sem qualquer critério razoável, e leva a história a tangenciar a sátira ao explorar descaradamente a loucura de Beale, mesmo questionando ao mesmo tempo os  decadentes pilares éticos da televisão.
