A SUPREMACIA BOURNE (THE BOURNE SUPREMACY, USA, 2004) – Um aspecto interessante da série com Jason Bourne, cada vez em que é revisitada, é a impressão de que a assistimos pela primeira vez. Aqui, a direção de Paul Greengrass imprime um ritmo alucinante, sem perder o fluxo tensional de uma história, no macrocosmo, sobre a busca da identidade – algo com que facilmente nos relacionamos. Matt Demon é obrigatório: sua expressão facial se transforma num quadro amplo da sua angústia em função da falta das memórias afetivas que, em certa medida, dão sentido à vida. Mesmo as lembranças atuais acabam se tornando um peso, quando uma tragédia lhe rouba a melhor razão para ele continuar acreditando numa vida mais próxima do normal. An interesting aspect of the series with Jason Bourne, each time it is revisited, is the impression that we watched it for the first time. Here, Paul Greengrass's direction imprints a breakneck pace, without losing the tensional flow of a story, in the macrocosm, about the search for identity – something with which we easily relate. Matt Damon is mandatory: his facial expression becomes a broad picture of his anguish due to the lack of affective memories that, to a certain extent, give meaning to life. O GUARDA-COSTAS (THE BODYGUARD, USA, 1992) – Este é um filme em que tudo deu certo, quando o conjunto da obra parecia apontar para um fracasso inevitável. Está ali – de uma forma talvez involuntária – algo que atrai nossa atenção logo de início. Afinal, quem não precisa de proteção neste mundo? Este, a meu ver, é o principal apelo de um roteiro previsível e, convenhamos, bem pouco original. Mas nada disso importa diante da química entre Kevin Costner e Whitney Houston (“Houston, temos um problema”), uma trilha sonora pra lá de melosa e, especialmente para mim, a presença de Ralph Waite – o patriarca de OS WALTONS -, também aqui vivendo a figura paterna de Costner. Ele poderia ter tido mais tempo em cena, mas arrasa na sequência da casa no campo, para onde Costner e Houston vão depois das ameaças começarem a escalar. O GUARDA-COSTA invoca um sentimento primal atrelado à necessidade de se proteger instintivamente de um perigo iminente, mas nem sempre definido, sensação mais comum hoje do que seria o normal (aqui, abre-se a discussão sobre o que é ou não normal). This is a film in which everything worked out, when the body of work seemed to point to an inevitable failure. There is something that attracts our attention right from the start. After all, who doesn't need protection in this world? This, in my view, is the main appeal of a predictable and, let's face it, very unoriginal script. But none of that matters in the face of the chemistry between Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston (“Houston, we have a problem"), a very mellow soundtrack and, especially for me, the presence of Ralph Waite – the patriarch of THE WALTONS – also here playing Costner's father figure. He could have had more time on the scene, but he rocks in the sequence at the country house, where Costner and Houston go after the threats start to escalate. The BODYGUARD invokes a primal feeling linked to the need to instinctively protect oneself from an imminent, but not always defined, danger, a sensation more common today than would be normal (here, the discussion about what is or is not normal is opened). A IDENTIDADE BOURNE (THE BOURNE IDENTITY, USA, 2002) – Uma das grandes qualidades deste primeiro filme é uma proposta instigante: por que temos necessidade de saber quem somos, de buscar uma identidade e, destarte, a sensação de pertencimento? O personagem de Matt Demon (um ator obrigatório, registre-se) passa essa necessidade de buscar suas raízes e ressignificar sua existência, o que a maioria de nós tenta fazer na vida, de uma forma ou de outra. Isso constitui um pilar essencial na trama, porque se trata de descobrir sua identidade para se tornar livre de um passado que ele vai conhecendo aos poucos, na medida em que seu retorno passa a representar um perigo para a organização em que trabalha, por motivos que serão esclarecidos nos filmes subsequentes. Claro que o alto nível de comprometimento de Franka Potente ajuda muito nesta empreitada. One of the great qualities of this first film is a thought-provoking proposal: why do we need to know who we are, to search for an identity and, thus, the feeling of belonging? Matt Demon's character (a mandatory actor, for the record) conveys this need to seek his roots and give another sense to his existence, which most of us try to accomplish in life, in one way or another. This constitutes an essential pillar in the plot, because it is about discovering his identity in order to become free of a past that he gradually gets to know, as his return comes to represent a danger to the organization in which he works, for reasons that will be clarified in subsequent films. Of course, Franka Potente's high level of commitment helps a lot in this endeavor. Netflix.

4969 - PASSAGEIROS (2016)

  PASSAGEIROS (PASSENGERS, USA, 2016) – Sempre bem colocado na minha lista de filmes favoritos, PASSAGEIROS é uma ficção científica que, no fundo, é uma das mais belas histórias de amor já vistas nesta e em outras galáxias. O que você faria se estivesse sozinho numa espaçonave a caminho de um planeta distante a alguns anos-luz dali? Claro, procuraria um meio de ter como companhia uma mulher inteligente e linda. É exatamente isso que Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) faz, afinal, não em qualquer data estelar que alguém encontra Jennifer Lawrence no papel de uma escritora com o sugestivo nome de Aurora Lane. Assim, os dois vão se descobrindo, mas não sem antes haver uma resistência intempestiva da parte dela, quando descobre que foi “acordada” por Jim. Há momentos de uma beleza intangível, como na sequência de Aurora nadando na piscina da nave, com as estrelas de fundo, ou quando Jim a encontra para um jantar romântico, tendo apenas o bartender robô Arthur (Michael Sheen), uma mistura de ombro amigo e filósofo de balcão, apesar do pouco tempo em cena, como testemunha. A cinematografia é linda, assim como os atores e a mensagem final; e o roteiro acerta quando expande a discussão da temporalidade x atemporalidade e na constatação de que a vida, em todas as suas alegrias e tristezas, descobertas e frustrações, só pode mesmo ser vivida no presente. Always well placed on my list of favorite movies, PASSENGERS is a science fiction that, deep down, is one of the most beautiful love stories ever seen in this and other galaxies. What would you do if you were alone in a spaceship on your way to a distant planet a few light-years away? Of course, you would look for a way to have an intelligent and gorgeous woman for company. That's exactly what Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) does, after all, it's not on any star date that anyone finds Jennifer Lawrence in the role of a writer with the suggestive name of Aurora Lane. Thus, the two discover each other, but not before there is untimely resistance on her part, when she finds out that she was "woken up" by Jim. There are moments of intangible beauty, as in the sequence of Aurora swimming in the ship's pool, with the stars in the background, or when Jim meets her for a romantic dinner, with only the robot bartender Arthur (Michael Sheen), a mixture of shoulder friend and philosopher at the counter, despite the short time on stage, as a witness. A Palestinian surgeon discovers that his wife was responsible for an attack that killed several people in Tel Aviv. The story is impressively current, portraying the tensions between Israel and Palestine and bringing to the discussion a family drama in which the two sides equalize in their perception of the world: the husband, who did not suspect his wife's participation in resistance groups; and the woman whose life took on another meaning, when she realized the injustices suffered by the Palestinian people. The dry, almost suffocating climate of the landscapes leads us to a deep involvement with the pain of the husband who loses his wife unexpectedly, and with his attempt to understand the reasons that led her to this radical act. The film captures his internal struggle, and the problems and paradoxes of his life may symbolize the conflicts between Israel and Palestine that resulted, in the present day, in the genocide of the Palestinian people.

A América estava abalada pelo envolvimento na guerra do Vietnã, escândalos na Casa Branca e desobediência civil. Os programas populares da época eram programas de talk show e variedades em horário nobre, e 'All in the Family' estava definindo o tom para a TV de ponta. Apesar disso, 'The Waltons' estreou e rapidamente formou um público que acompanhou as 9 temporadas, 6 especiais de filmes e um lugar em nossa consciência coletiva que perdura há décadas. No Brasil, estreou em 1974 e se tornou um sucesso até 1982. 4966 - AMOR E MORTE - 7 EPISÓDIOS (2023)

      AMOR E MORTE – 7 EPISÓDIOS (LOVE AND DEATH, USA, 2023) – Candy (Elizabeth Olsen), uma dona de casa infeliz no casamento, decide ter um caso com um amigo, Allan (Jesse Plemons), também casado, ambos membros de uma igreja numa cidadezinha do Texas. Esse argumento dá início a uma análise arguta (para quem presta atenção) da natureza das igrejas evangélicas e sua influência deletéria em uma comunidade sem muito apreço pela honestidade. Os personagens, em geral, são levados por um código de conduta, digamos, bem maleável, no que diz respeito às consequências de suas ações – é o caso de Candy, quando seduz Allan (uma aparente não atuação de Plemons, num personagem totalmente desprovido de emoção) e, assim, desencadeia uma série de fatos que resultam num desfecho previsível para o adultério, bem ao estilo true crime. Mas é nos episódios finais que os processos jurídicos se interligam com uma certa equalização ética que mistura provincianismo e misticismo religioso. Elizabeth Olsen confirma seu talento dramático num personagem bem distante de Wandavision. Há um filme na HULO, com a mesma história, com Jessica Biel, mas sem a profundidade dramática e a exploração do contexto social vistas aqui. Candy (Elizabeth Olsen), an unhappily married housewife, decides to have an affair with a friend, Allan (Jesse Plemons), also married, both members of a church in a small town in Texas. This argument begins a shrewd (for those who pay attention) analysis of the nature of evangelical churches and their deleterious influence on a community without much appreciation for honesty. The characters, in general, are led by a code of conduct, let's say, very malleable, concerning the consequences of their actions – this is the case of Candy, when she seduces Allan (an apparent non-performance of Plemons, in a character totally devoid of emotion) and, thus, triggers a series of facts that result in a predictable outcome to adultery, in a true crime style. But it is in the final episodes that the legal processes are intertwined with an ethical equalization that blends provincialism and religious mysticism. Elizabeth Olsen confirms her dramatic talent in a character way far from WandaVision. There's a movie at HULO, with the same story, with Jessica Biel, but without the dramatic depth and exploration of the social context seen here. Netflix. 

4965 - REDE DE INTRIGAS (1976)

  

REDE DE INTRIGAS (NETWORK, USA, 1976) – Um âncora famoso e popular, Howard Beale (Peter Finch), diante do aviso de que vai ser demitido – a audiência do noticiário que ele apresenta está caindo a cada dia – anuncia no ar que vai se matar diante das câmeras dali a duas semanas. A princípio, a direção da emissora fica em polvorosa, mas percebe que a popularidade do programa aumenta a cada dia e resolve manter Beale no ar, dando a ele liberdade para falar o que quiser. Este excelente filme de Sidney Lumet é premonitório em vários aspectos, principalmente na instrumentalização da desgraça humana para fins lucrativos e na manipulação da audiência dos programas de TV. O personagem de Faye Dunaway, Diana Christiansen, uma executiva da emissora, sempre ávida pelos números da audiência, disposta a tudo para atingir seus objetivos (é dela a ideia de manter Beale no ar) tem uma importância fulcral, pois evidencia a desumanização da empresa, sem qualquer critério razoável, e leva a história a tangenciar a sátira ao explorar descaradamente a loucura de Beale, mesmo questionando ao mesmo tempo os  decadentes pilares éticos da televisão. O grande Robert Duvall é outro executivo sem qualquer escrúpulo diante da possibilidade do suicídio de Beale, e William Holden tem uma atuação estupenda, especialmente quando começa um affair com Diana, achando que se envolver com o diabo pode ser o amor que ele deseja, até a sua fala final, quando diz a ela: “Não há nada em você com que eu possa conviver”. Um dos grandes filmes da Nova Hollywood. Obrigatório. This excellent film by Sidney Lumet is premonitory in several aspects, mainly in the instrumentalization of human misfortune for profit and in the manipulation of the audience of TV programs. Faye Dunaway's character, Diana Christiansen, an executive at the network, always eager for audience numbers, willing to do anything to achieve her goals (it is her idea to keep Beale on the air) has a central importance, as it evidences the dehumanization of the company, without any reasonable criteria, and leads the story to touch on satire by shamelessly exploring Beale's madness, even questioning at the same time the decadent ethical pillars of television. The great Robert Duvall is another unscrupulous executive about the possibility of Beale's suicide, and William Holden has a stupendous performance, especially when he begins an affair with Diana, thinking that getting involved with the devil may be the love he wants, until his final line, when he tells her: "There is nothing in you that I can live with". One of the great films of the New Hollywood. Mandatory.

4964 - CRÔNICA DE UM AMOR LOUCO (1981)

 

CRÔNICA DE UM AMOR LOUCO (STORIE DI ORDINARIA FOLLIA, Itália, 1982) – Um escritor alcóolatra e viciado em sexo (Ben Gazarra, perfeito no papel) acorda de sua ressaca e pega um ônibus para Los Angeles e mergulha numa orgia de bebida e depravação sexual, até conhecer uma prostituta autodestrutiva, Cass (Ornela Mutti, no auge da beleza) e, finalmente, encontra sentido para sua vida. Este é o primeiro filme baseado num livro de Charles Bukowski, cuja vida é a mesma do protagonista vivido por Gazarra. O diretor Marco Ferreri consegue criar uma atmosfera degradante e desprezível, concentrando-se na construção de um filme poético sobre pessoas desesperadas e, de certa forma, afetadas destrutivamente pela vida e suas escolhas, além de filmar de uma forma minimalista bem próxima ao estilo de Bukowski. Este é um filme imperdível, com atuações maiúsculas, uma direção equilibrada e uma mensagem que nos faz pensar, além de sentir. An alcoholic writer and sex addict (Ben Gazarra, perfect in the role) wakes up from his hangover and takes a bus to Los Angeles and plunges into an orgy of drinking and sexual depravity, until he meets a self-destructive prostitute, Cass (Ornela Mutti, at the prime of her beauty), and, finally, finds meaning in his life. This is the first film based on a book by Charles Bukowski, whose life is the same as the protagonist played by Gazarra. Director Marco Ferreri manages to create a degrading and sleazily atmospheric film, focusing on the construction of a poetic film about desperate people and, in a way, destructively affected by life and their choices, in addition to filming in a minimalist way very close to Bukowski's style. This is a must-see film, with capital performances, a balanced direction, and a message that makes us think, as well as feel. YouTube.

4965 - LOBO (1994)

 LOBO (WOLF, USA, 1994) – Jack Nicholson é um editor literário que tem sua vida totalmente alterada depois de ter sido mordido por um lobo. Esta premissa é muito bem aproveitada por Mike Nichols, ao desviar de uma abordagem convencional neste tipo de história, com muito sangue e vísceras em profusão, e apostar num tom mais psicológico e um elenco de altíssima qualidade, que conta com Michelle Pfeiffer, no papel de Laura, filha do milionário Raymond Alden (Christopher Plummer) e perseguida por Stewart Swinton (James Spader). A licantropia é um tema por demais explorado no cinema. Os lobisomens violam a distinção categorial entre seres humanos e lobos. A identidade humana e a identidade do lobo não se fundem, mas são escalonadas. Neste filme, há uma clara intenção de apontar a distinção entre pavor artístico e horror artístico. Este tem a repugnância como característica central, e aquele não apresenta esta característica. O conceito teratológico do lobisomem justifica a antinatureza do monstro e não é apenas uma ameaça física, mas também uma ameaça cognitiva, pois desafia o saber comum. Em LOBO, a transformação do protagonista em um lobisomem causa pavor no próprio ser intersticial resultante deste processo – ele teme a si próprio, quando percebe que cometeu crimes durante as noites de lua cheia e, assim, quer proteger seu objeto amorável, Laura. Afinal, quem não uivaria para a lua, depois de ter passado a noite com Michele Pfeiffer? Jack Nicholson is a literary editor whose life is totally changed after being bitten by a wolf. This premise is very well used by Mike Nichols, by deviating from a conventional approach in this type of story, with a lot of blood and viscera in profusion, and betting on a more psychological tone and a very high-quality cast, which includes Michelle Pfeiffer, in the role of Laura, daughter of millionaire Raymond Alden (Christopher Plummer) and pursued by Stewart Swinton (James Spader). Lycanthropy is a theme that is overexploited in cinema. Werewolves violate the categorical distinction between humans and wolves. Human identity and wolf identity do not merge, but are staggered. In this film, there is a clear intention to point out the distinction between artistic dread and artistic horror. The latter has repugnance as a central characteristic, and the former does not have this characteristic. The teratological concept of the werewolf justifies the anti-nature of the monster and is not only a physical threat but also a cognitive threat as they defy common knowledge. In WOLF, the transformation of the protagonist into a werewolf causes dread in the interstitial being itself, resulting from this process – he fears himself when he realizes that he committed crimes during the nights of the full moon and, thus, wants to protect his love object, Laura. After all, who wouldn't howl at the moon, after having spent the night with Michele Pfeiffer?

4964 - O DESTEMIDO SENHOR DA GUERRA (1986)

 O DESTEMIDO SENHOR DA GUERRA (HEARTBREAK RIDGE, USA, 1986) – Este filme engraçado de Clint Eastwood nos dá a possibilidade de perceber nele os elementos, ainda latentes, que o tornariam o excepcional diretor de hoje. O Destemido Senhor da Guerra, que ele dirigiu em 1986, pertence a uma fase de transição na sua carreira. Escrito por James Carabatsos, o filme nos apresenta o veterano sargento dos fuzileiros Tom Highway, interpretado pelo próprio Eastwood. Ele é um oficial dos mais severos e isso fez com que sua vida pessoal e seu casamento saíssem bastante prejudicados. Perto de se aposentar, Highway termina sendo designado para treinar um grupo de recrutas indisciplinados. O Destemido Senhor da Guerra, e convém elogiar o belo título nacional, é um filme que nos revela um diretor quase formado. E é por isso mesmo, uma genuína aula de cinema. This funny film by Clint Eastwood gives us the possibility to perceive in him the elements, still latent, that would make him the exceptional director of today. Heartbreak Ridge, which he directed in 1986, belongs to a transitional phase in his career. Written by James Carabatsos, the film introduces us to veteran Marine Sergeant Tom Highway, played by Eastwood himself. He is one of the strictest officers, and this has caused his personal life and his marriage to be greatly damaged. Close to retirement, Highway ends up being assigned to train a group of unruly recruits. Heartbreak Ridge, and it is worth praising the beautiful Portuguese title, is a film that reveals to us an almost formed director. And it is for this very reason that it is a genuine cinema lesson. A MOSCA (THE FLY, USA, 1986) – David Cronenberg parte de um argumento simples, mas poderoso – a busca pela glória comprometida pela vaidade – e o desenvolve magistralmente até à horripilante conclusão. A MOSCA, ao lado de ALIENS, O 8º PASSAGEIRO, é um dos mais perfeitos blends de ficção científica e horror. O diretor promove uma interação natural entre os personagens e suas personalidades, nos levando a uma séria reflexão sobre a natureza humana e a mortalidade. Os excelentes efeitos mecânicos fornecem também a base de uma intensa história de amor, entrecortada de terror e tragédia, sob uma perspectiva, digamos, minimalista. Jeff Goldblum está fenomenal no papel e acerta na mosca (sem trocadilho) ao compor um cientista que, na medida em que vai perdendo a forma humana, mantém intacta a sua humanidade. Ao fim, o terror intrínseco desta história se transforma, assim como Brundle, num dos desfechos mais tristes do cinema. David Cronenberg starts from a simple but powerful argument – the search for glory compromised by vanity – and masterfully develops it to its horrifying conclusion. THE FLY, along with ALIENS, is one of the most perfect blends of science fiction and horror. The director promotes a natural interaction between the characters and their personalities, leading us to a serious reflection on human nature and mortality. The excellent pre-CGI effects also provide the basis of an intense love story, interspersed with terror and tragedy, from a, let's say, minimalist perspective. Jeff Goldblum is phenomenal in the role and hits the nail on the head by composing a scientist who, as he loses his human form, keeps his humanity intact. In the end, the intrinsic terror of this story becomes, like Brundle, one of the saddest endings in cinema. Disney Plus.

A ASTRONAUTA (THE ASTRONAUT, USA, 2025) – O Astronauta era para ser um filme de ficção científica de horror, mas acabou não sendo nem uma coisa nem outra. A boa atuação de Kate Mara consegue algumas sequências sólidas, mas o filme perde momentum, na medida em que procura expandir o escopo do roteiro. Esse tipo de história sempre vai ser uma versão atualizada – e piorada – de ALIENS, e isso, claro, prejudica a eficácia da premissa. Tem-se a impressão de que as evidentes restrições orçamentárias da produção não evitam os furos de um roteiro que nunca se define claramente, comprometendo, sem remissão, a trama. Laurence Fishburne, apesar de ter um personagem raso, consegue dar um pouco mais de consistência à história. The Astronaut was supposed to be a horror science fiction movie, but it turned out to be neither one thing nor the other. Kate Mara's good performance gets some solid sequences, but the film loses momentum as it seeks to expand the scope of the script. This type of story will always be an updated – and worsened – version of ALIENS, and this, of course, undermines the effectiveness of the premise. One has the impression that the evident budgetary constraints of the production do not avoid the holes in a script that is never clearly defined, compromising, without remission, the plot. MAN ON THE RUN (USA, UK, 2026) – O documentário sobre Paul McCartney, cobre o período de 1969 a 1981, quando o WINGS foi dissolvido, e Paul passa novamente a ter uma carreira solo. O filme também aborda a escalação de Linda na banda, por insistência de Paul, apesar dos reveses já vistos com John e Yoko nos derradeiros tempos dos Beatles. Apesar da resistência de Linda em estar no palco com Paul, ela não era uma completa iniciante nos teclados, já que tinha estudado piano quando criança, coisa que o documentário não cita. É uma boa chance de rever a trajetória de Paul pós-Beatles, suas angústias (a fase da bebida é mencionada) e tentativas de recuperar a veia criativa e a vontade de colocar o pé na estrada, como no início de sua carreira. O AGENTE SECRETO (Brasil, USA, Holanda, França, 2025) – A primeira sequência do filme de Kleber Mendonça é de humor macabro e também altamente tensa, diante do olhar perplexo do personagem de Wagner Moura. A meu ver, é isso que dá o tom para o filme que, dali por diante, acompanha seu protagonista como se fosse uma sombra, sentindo sua angústia, à medida em que suas esperanças parecem derreter sob o sol intenso do Nordeste. O roteiro não tem pressa de apresentar suas ramificações, dispondo aos poucos seus elementos, até termos a dimensão total da história. A fotografia meio granulada nos remete aos anos 70, assim como o ritmo lento das ações e o permanente terrorismo da ditadura no ar. Kleber Mendonça retrata de modo natural a violência das relações sociais, numa época em que o medo, mais do que uma reação ao ambiente hostil do país, era uma forma de se proteger do perigo iminente atrás das ações mais simples e cotidianas como ir ao cinema, por exemplo. Uma observação: a atuação de Wagner Moura precisa ser observada com muita atenção, senão há uma grande chance de ser considerada menor do que realmente é. Uma nota: último filme de Udo Kier. QUANDO AS MULHERES QUEREM PROVAS (Brasil, 1975) – Mais um exemplo de um filme desta época, em que estavam em alta o machismo, a virilidade à toda prova, a objetificação da mulher jovem, quase liberal para os padrões daquele período e a estilização do sexo, sempre em situações esdrúxulas e, convenhamos, nada excitantes. Carlo Mossy, mais uma vez no papel de idiota tarado, contracena com a bela Rossana Ghessa. A ação ( ? ) se passa em Vitória (ES), com sequências mal conectadas e diálogos machistas, quando não completamente sem sentido.  SONHOS DE TREM (TRAIN DREAMS, USA, 2025) – O belíssimo trabalho de fotografia de Adolpho Veloso só ajuda na bela construção poética do filme Clint Bentley, com Joel Edgerton e Felicity Jones. Tudo é muito lento e sensível nesta história sobre a luta do homem contra a natureza, em nome do progresso duvidoso, segundo o capitalismo ianque. Além disso, o filme evoca o amor que restaura as esperanças perdidas,  a tristeza decorrente das perdas inevitáveis da vida, emolduradas pelas lindas paisagens que criam um ambiente imersivo do qual não há como escapar. A fotografia sublime transforma cenas comuns em momentos emocionantes. A expressão melancólica de Edgerton contrasta com a vibração natural de Felicity Jones, e esta contrapartida é um elemento essencial para a força de um filme mais silencioso do que falado, mais visual do que literário, mais emocionante do que cerebral. Belíssimo, em uma palavra. The beautiful photography work of Adolpho Veloso only helps in the beautiful poetic construction of the film, Clint Bentley, with Joel Edgerton and Felicity Jones. É uma história pesada e bem retratada, de modo que alguns dos mais cruéis atos da história humana parecem estar acontecendo diante dos nossos olhos (muitos estão mesmo). Direção e cinematografia excepcionais, atuações à altura do tema e um emocionante depoimento nos créditos finais. Based on true accounts, the film tells how two prisoners of a concentration camp during World War II plan to escape, using only the meager resources they have. It's a heavy and well-portrayed story, so that some of the cruelest acts in human history seem to be happening before our eyes (many are). Este filme, subdividido em 16 histórias curtas, todas protagonizadas por ele, mostrando personagens com várias facetas do povo argentino, é irregular, com personagens estereotipados, não raro ressaltando características negativas, como o comprador de dólares que passa a perna num casal de turistas brasileiros. Apesar dos roteiros, muitas vezes mal engendrados, Francella consegue manter a atenção do espectador, devido ao seu talento de dar vida a personagens que parecem muito próximos de nós, formando uma ligação afetiva irresistível. Desta vez, é notável ver como Jon Cryer é um ator excepcional, que deveria ter mais oportunidades de mostrar seu talento. Nesta temporada, no episódio 6, The Price of Healthy Gums Is Eternal Vigilance, ele simplesmente dá um show de interpretação, equilibrando magistralmente a mágoa de ter sido enganado por Charlie na infância com a tentativa de lidar com suas frustrações presentes. Even after having watched TAHM so many times, the series still remains one of the most hilarious on TV. This time, it's remarkable to see how Jon Cryer is an exceptional actor, who should have more opportunities to showcase his talent. In this season, in episode 6, The Price of Healthy Gums Is Eternal Vigilance, he simply rocks, masterfully balancing the heartache of having been deceived by Charlie as a child with trying to deal with his present frustrations. VERDADE OCULTA – 9 EPISÓDIOS (THE LOWDOWN, USA, 2025) – Criada pelo diretor de origem indígena, Sterlin Harjo, TL conta a história de um jornalista investigativo de Tulsa (Ethan Hawke, agarrando seu personagem com toda a força anímica de que dispõe) lutando para desmascarar a corrupção na sua cidade, depois do suicídio de um milionário  que pretendia devolver suas terras ao povo indígena da região. Além de Hawke, eletrificante num personagem que mistura humor e determinação, temos o excelente Tim Blake Nelson, Jeanne Tripplehorn e Kyle MacLachlan, esse último encontrando o tom certo para um político ambicioso e meio mau caráter. A série é muito bem dirigida – Harjo usa enquadramentos precisos e cortes inesperados para dar ritmo à ação, sem perder o fio condutor de uma história cuja força maior é mostrar como os índios americanos são injustiçados até hoje, sem falar no genocídio que quase destruiu seu povo e inspirou um certo líder autoritário de um país europeu nos anos 30. A CASA DO ESPANTO (HOUSE, 1985) – Esta comédia de horror, típica dos anos 80, funciona, dentro de sua proposta de entretenimento, embora não chegue aos pés da icônica A HORA DO ESPANTO, de 1985, dirigida por Tom Holland. O principal motivo para assistir o filme de Steve Miner é a presença de George Wendt, o Norm de CHEERS, com um personagem bem próximo da sua persona na série, exceto pela ausência da litragem excessiva de cerveja consumida por ele. No mais, o filme envelheceu mal, com alguns efeitos bem abaixo da média dos filmes do gênero da mesma época. Mas Norm faz valer a pena dar uma olhada. This horror comedy, typical of the 80s, works, within its entertainment proposal, although it cannot be compared to the iconic FRIGHT NIGHT, FROM 1985, directed by Tom Holland. The main reason to watch Steve Miner's movie is the presence of George Wendt, Norm from CHEERS, with a character very close to his persona in the series, except for the absence of the excessive amount of beer consumed by him. O DISCRETO CHARME DA BURGUESIA (LE CHARM DISCRET DE LA BOURGEOISIE, França, 1972) – Muitos dos filmes de Luis Buñuel são, de alguma forma, comédias, mas sem gags ou piadas tradicionais – seu estilo é mais o de um boxeador acertando um golpe nas costelas, discreto, doloroso e eficiente. Neste filme, o surrealismo do diretor aparece em situações cotidianas, sempre atravessadas por fatos inesperados – como os casais protagonistas que nunca conseguem comer quando se sentam à mesa. O ato de jantar, na visão de Buñuel, é o ritual social central da classe média, onde seus membros podem exibir riqueza e, com um pouco de sorte, boas maneiras. O grande elemento cômico do filme é o modo com que Buñuel interrompe as refeições com os segredos que espreitam por trás da aristocracia decadente europeia: a falta de cultura, adultério, drogas, mentiras, golpes militares, perversão etc. A narrativa segue um padrão onírico, autodepreciativo e invariavelmente cínico. Buñuel tem um olhar lúdico sobre as incongruências humanas, o que não nos torna maus, mas sim engraçados, na sua perspectiva. JUDGMENT IN NUREMBERG (USA, 1961) – Logo após o fim da WW2, seguindo a condenação dos nazistas mais notórios, houve uma série de julgamentos dos juízes que participaram da máquina sanguinária no Terceiro Reich. Este é o momento retratado pelo filme de Stanley Kramer, um diretor muito comprometido com questões sociais, como nos filmes ADVINHE QUEM VEM PARA O JANTAR, com Sidney Poitier, e o maravilhoso O SEGREDO DE SANTA VITÓRIA, com Anthony Quinn. JIN é um filme passado, na sua totalidade, dentro de um tribunal e , em momento algum, perde sua dinâmica e ritmo, levantando questões éticas e filosóficas. Tanto que, durante o filme, temo a nítida impressão de que o tribunal é a real prisão psicológica dos acusados. Dentre eles, Burt Lancaster é um juiz alemão respeitado que, inexplicavelmente, passou para o lado negro da Força, numa atuação memorável. As cenas com Montgomery Cliff e Judy Garland trazem para a tela todo o drama que os dois atores viviam na sua vida real. Além disso, temos a oportunidade de ver em cena Werner Klemperer e William Shatner bem antes de se tornarem Coronel Klink e Capitão Kirk. Maxmillian Schell ganhou um Oscar, e Spencer Tracy, como o juiz americano presidindo o tribunal, é a mais que perfeita tradução da serenidade e sabedoria, especialmente no belíssimo discurso final, mostrando que a grande tragédia da guerra foi a falta de coragem das pessoas diante da barbárie nazista.  Soon after the end of WW2, following the condemnation of the most notorious Nazis, there were a series of trials of the judges who participated in the bloodthirsty machine in the Third Reich. FOGO CONTRA FOGO (HEAT, USA, 1995) – O filme de Michael Mann é um dos maiores thrillers policiais do cinema, não bastasse o tão esperado encontro de Robert De Niro e Al Pacino que, até então, nunca haviam atuado numa mesma cena. E que cena!! Num bar, conversando frente a frente, os dois produzem um momento clássico do cinema, no qual Pacino, um policial cuja honestidade é o seu maior asset, e De Niro, com um olhar penetrante, misturando agressividade e ousadia. Fica claro o respeito mútuo de dois personagens diametralmente opostos nos seus valores, mas, ao mesmo tempo, incapazes de esconder a admiração por princípios éticos tão diferentes. Além desta cena histórica, o roteiro é tão bem urdido, que as quase três horas do filme parecem uma aula condensada do melhor que há no cinema. Michael Mann's film is one of the greatest crime thrillers in cinema, as if the long-awaited meeting of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino were not enough, who, until then, had never acted in the same scene. And what a scene!! In a bar, talking face to face, the two produce a classic movie moment, in which Pacino, a policeman whose honesty is his greatest asset, and De Niro, with a penetrating gaze, mixing aggressiveness and boldness. It is clear the mutual respect of two characters diametrically opposed in their values, but, at the same time, unable to hide their admiration for such different ethical principles. SEM LIMITES (LIMITLESS, USA, 2011) – Eddie (Bradley Cooper) é um típico loser americano: escritor medíocre, largado pela esposa e a namorada, sem dinheiro, malvestido e, acima de tudo, sem confiança em si mesmo. Um dia, alguém lhe dá um comprimido que o torna, imediatamente, um homem de negócios de sucesso, com uma inteligência fora do normal, um gênio das finanças, além do charme e carisma capaz de seduzir mulheres e qualquer um que se aproxime dele. Esta premissa – uma droga que muda positivamente a vida de uma pessoa – não é discutida a fundo, nem as implicações morais de uma superinteligência oriunda de um estímulo externo artificial passam por qualquer análise mais detalhada. De qualquer forma, o roteiro possibiliza um vislumbre da natureza das escolhas de um indivíduo, quando ele não tem mais autonomia sobre suas vontades. Outra coisa: o que um ator do quilate de Robert De Niro está fazendo num papel tão desimportante? A LIRA DO DELÍRIO (BRASIL, 1976) – A sequência inicial do filme de Walter Lima Jr aponta para as escolhas estéticas do diretor: um carnaval de rua, caótico como deve ser, onde se sobressai uma foliã tristonha, na contramão do ambiente de total suposta alegria desmedida, como se simbolizasse a existência do sofrimento e da dor, apesar da alegria institucionalizada da festa de Momo. Na diegese de Walter Lima Jr, a liberdade corporal dos personagens se entrelaça com uma história subdividida em hedonismo exacerbado e as frustrações inevitáveis dos comportamentos inconsequentes de uma juventude marginal ainda imersa pelo peso dos anos de chumbo no Brasil. E são exatamente esses “inadaptados” que representam uma resistência aos valores morais de uma sociedade opressora e injusta, onde se normalizam ações extremas, como o sequestro de uma criança e o assassinato de figuras à margem da burguesia conservadora, como as dos travestis, que representam a dualidade social/sexual que tanto apavora os “cidadãos de bem”.  REPÚBLICA DOS ASSASSINOS (Brasil, 1979) – O filme de Miguel Faria Jr. é um drama que traz elementos que transcendem a narrativa policialesca comum, como o amor bandido e a vingança do oprimido. Tarcísio Meira, como Mateus, divide o protagonismo com o travesti Eloína, interpretado por Anselmo Vasconcelos, que, por sinal, é o elemento-chave da trama, representando uma discussão sobre gênero e sexualidade, coisa rara nos estertores da década de 70. Há uma polaridade (ou bipolaridade) na relação entre Mateus e Eloína que remete à desconstrução do macho latino-americano – ao mesmo tempo em que divide o boudoir com Eloína, ele se relaciona com Marlene (Sandra Bréa) e Regina (Sylvia Bandeira) de maneira autoritária e violenta, reproduzindo seu modus operandi profissional. Com Eloína, Mateus encontra a felicidade na forma de equiparação de potências (Freud, rápido!), como também se vê diante da sua própria destruição como policial corrupto e troglodita sentimental. O roteiro mostra a degradação ética em todos os poderes, seja no midiático, na força policial ou na seara política.
