HOMO ARGENTUM (Argentina, 2025) – Guillermo Francella é obrigatório. Este filme, subdividido em 16 histórias curtas, todas protagonizadas por ele, mostrando personagens com várias facetas do povo argentino, é irregular, com personagens estereotipados, não raro ressaltando características negativas, como o comprador de dólares que passa a perna num casal de turistas brasileiros. Apesar dos roteiros, muitas vezes mal engendrados, Francella consegue manter a atenção do espectador, devido ao seu talento de dar vida a personagens que parecem muito próximos de nós, formando uma ligação afetiva irresistível. TWO AND A HALF MEN – TEMP 2 (USA, 2004) – Mesmo depois de ter assistido a TAHM tantas vezes, a série ainda continua sendo uma das mais hilariantes da TV. Desta vez, é notável ver como Jon Cryer é um ator excepcional, que deveria ter mais oportunidades de mostrar seu talento. Nesta temporada, no episódio 6, The Price of Healthy Gums Is Eternal Vigilance, ele simplesmente dá um show de interpretação, equilibrando magistralmente a mágoa de ter sido enganado por Charlie na infância com a tentativa de lidar com suas frustrações presentes. Even after having watched TAHM so many times, the series still remains one of the most hilarious on TV. This time, it's remarkable to see how Jon Cryer is an exceptional actor, who should have more opportunities to showcase his talent. In this season, in episode 6, The Price of Healthy Gums Is Eternal Vigilance, he simply rocks, masterfully balancing the heartache of having been deceived by Charlie as a child with trying to deal with his present frustrations. VERDADE OCULTA – 9 EPISÓDIOS (THE LOWDOWN, USA, 2025) – Criada pelo diretor de origem indígena, Sterlin Harjo, TL conta a história de um jornalista investigativo de Tulsa (Ethan Hawke, agarrando seu personagem com toda a força anímica de que dispõe) lutando para desmascarar a corrupção na sua cidade, depois do suicídio de um milionário  que pretendia devolver suas terras ao povo indígena da região. Além de Hawke, eletrificante num personagem que mistura humor e determinação, temos o excelente Tim Blake Nelson, Jeanne Tripplehorn e Kyle MacLachlan, esse último encontrando o tom certo para um político ambicioso e meio mau caráter. A série é muito bem dirigida – Harjo usa enquadramentos precisos e cortes inesperados para dar ritmo à ação, sem perder o fio condutor de uma história cuja força maior é mostrar como os índios americanos são injustiçados até hoje, sem falar no genocídio que quase destruiu seu povo e inspirou um certo líder autoritário de um país europeu nos anos 30. Created by Native American director Sterlin Harjo, TL tells the story of an investigative journalist from Tulsa (Ethan Hawke, bringing his character to life with all the soul strength at his disposal) struggling to unmask corruption in his city, after the suicide of a millionaire who intended to return his land to the indigenous people of the region. In addition to Hawke, electrifying in a character that mixes humor and determination, we have the excellent Tim Blake Nelson, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Kyle MacLachlan, the latter finding the right tone for an ambitious politician and a bit of a lousy character. The series is very well directed – Harjo uses precise framing and unexpected cuts to give rhythm to the action, without losing the common thread of a story whose greatest strength is to show how American Indians have been wronged to this day, not to mention the genocide that almost destroyed their people and inspired a certain authoritarian leader of a European country in the 30s. Norm, para sempre...

A CASA DO ESPANTO (HOUSE, 1985) – Esta comédia de horror, típica dos anos 80, funciona, dentro de sua proposta de entretenimento, embora não chegue aos pés da icônica A HORA DO ESPANTO, de 1985, dirigida por Tom Holland. O principal motivo para assistir o filme de Steve Miner é a presença de George Wendt, o Norm de CHEERS, com um personagem bem próximo da sua persona na série, exceto pela ausência da litragem excessiva de cerveja consumida por ele. No mais, o filme envelheceu mal, com alguns efeitos bem abaixo da média dos filmes do gênero da mesma época. Mas Norm faz valer a pena dar uma olhada. This horror comedy, typical of the 80s, works, within its entertainment proposal, although it cannot be compared to the iconic FRIGHT NIGHT, FROM 1985, directed by Tom Holland. The main reason to watch Steve Miner's movie is the presence of George Wendt, Norm from CHEERS, with a character very close to his persona in the series, except for the absence of the excessive amount of beer consumed by him. O DISCRETO CHARME DA BURGUESIA (LE CHARM DISCRET DE LA BOURGEOISIE, França, 1972) – Muitos dos filmes de Luis Buñuel são, de alguma forma, comédias, mas sem gags ou piadas tradicionais – seu estilo é mais o de um boxeador acertando um golpe nas costelas, discreto, doloroso e eficiente. Neste filme, o surrealismo do diretor aparece em situações cotidianas, sempre atravessadas por fatos inesperados – como os casais protagonistas que nunca conseguem comer quando se sentam à mesa. O ato de jantar, na visão de Buñuel, é o ritual social central da classe média, onde seus membros podem exibir riqueza e, com um pouco de sorte, boas maneiras. O grande elemento cômico do filme é o modo com que Buñuel interrompe as refeições com os segredos que espreitam por trás da aristocracia decadente europeia: a falta de cultura, adultério, drogas, mentiras, golpes militares, perversão etc. A narrativa segue um padrão onírico, autodepreciativo e invariavelmente cínico. Buñuel tem um olhar lúdico sobre as incongruências humanas, o que não nos torna maus, mas sim engraçados, na sua perspectiva. The great comic element of the film is the way Buñuel interrupts meals with the secrets that lurk behind the decadent European aristocracy: the lack of culture, adultery, drugs, lies, military coups, perversion, etc. The narrative follows a dreamlike, self-deprecating, and invariably cynical pattern. JUDGMENT IN NUREMBERG (USA, 1961) – Logo após o fim da WW2, seguindo a condenação dos nazistas mais notórios, houve uma série de julgamentos dos juízes que participaram da máquina sanguinária no Terceiro Reich. Este é o momento retratado pelo filme de Stanley Kramer, um diretor muito comprometido com questões sociais, como nos filmes ADVINHE QUEM VEM PARA O JANTAR, com Sidney Poitier, e o maravilhoso O SEGREDO DE SANTA VITÓRIA, com Anthony Quinn. JIN é um filme passado, na sua totalidade, dentro de um tribunal e , em momento algum, perde sua dinâmica e ritmo, levantando questões éticas e filosóficas. Tanto que, durante o filme, temo a nítida impressão de que o tribunal é a real prisão psicológica dos acusados. Dentre eles, Burt Lancaster é um juiz alemão respeitado que, inexplicavelmente, passou para o lado negro da Força, numa atuação memorável. As cenas com Montgomery Cliff e Judy Garland trazem para a tela todo o drama que os dois atores viviam na sua vida real. Além disso, temos a oportunidade de ver em cena Werner Klemperer e William Shatner bem antes de se tornarem Coronel Klink e Capitão Kirk. Maxmillian Schell ganhou um Oscar, e Spencer Tracy, como o juiz americano presidindo o tribunal, é a mais que perfeita tradução da serenidade e sabedoria, especialmente no belíssimo discurso final, mostrando que a grande tragédia da guerra foi a falta de coragem das pessoas diante da barbárie nazista.  Soon after the end of WW2, following the condemnation of the most notorious Nazis, there were a series of trials of the judges who participated in the bloodthirsty machine in the Third Reich. This is the moment portrayed by the film by Stanley Kramer, a director very committed to social issues, as in the films GUESS WHO'S COMING FOR DINNER, with Sidney Poitier, and the wonderful THE SECRET OF SANTA VITÓRIA, with Anthony Quinn. JIN is a film set, in its entirety, inside a courtroom; at no time does it lose its dynamics and rhythm, raising ethical and philosophical questions. So much so that, during the film, I fear the distinct impression that the court is the real psychological prison of the accused. Among them, Burt Lancaster is a respected German judge who, inexplicably, went over to the dark side of the Force, in a memorable performance. The scenes with Montgomery Cliff and Judy Garland bring to the screen all the drama that the two actors lived in their real lives. In addition, we have the opportunity to see Werner Klemperer and William Shatner on stage well before they become Colonel Klink and Captain Kirk. Maximillian Schell won an Oscar, and Spencer Tracy, as the American judge presiding over the court, is the more than perfect translation of serenity and wisdom, especially in the beautiful final speech, showing that the great tragedy of the war was the lack of courage of the people in the face of Nazi barbarism. 4949 - FOGO CONTRA FOGO (1995)

FOGO CONTRA FOGO (HEAT, USA, 1995) – O filme de Michael Mann é um dos maiores thrillers policiais do cinema, não bastasse o tão esperado encontro de Robert De Niro e Al Pacino que, até então, nunca haviam atuado numa mesma cena. E que cena!! Num bar, conversando frente a frente, os dois produzem um momento clássico do cinema, no qual Pacino, um policial cuja honestidade é o seu maior asset, e De Niro, com um olhar penetrante, misturando agressividade e ousadia. Fica claro o respeito mútuo de dois personagens diametralmente opostos nos seus valores, mas, ao mesmo tempo, incapazes de esconder a admiração por princípios éticos tão diferentes. Além desta cena histórica, o roteiro é tão bem urdido, que as quase três horas do filme parecem uma aula condensada do melhor que há no cinema. Michael Mann's film is one of the greatest crime thrillers in cinema, as if the long-awaited meeting of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino were not enough, who, until then, had never acted in the same scene. And what a scene!! In a bar, talking face to face, the two produce a classic movie moment, in which Pacino, a policeman whose honesty is his greatest asset, and De Niro, with a penetrating gaze, mixing aggressiveness and boldness. It is clear the mutual respect of two characters diametrically opposed in their values, but, at the same time, unable to hide their admiration for such different ethical principles. In addition to this historical scene, the script is so well woven that the almost three hours of the film seem like a condensed lesson of the best there is in cinema. Disney Plus.

SEM LIMITES (LIMITLESS, USA, 2011) – Eddie (Bradley Cooper) é um típico loser americano: escritor medíocre, largado pela esposa e a namorada, sem dinheiro, malvestido e, acima de tudo, sem confiança em si mesmo. Um dia, alguém lhe dá um comprimido que o torna, imediatamente, um homem de negócios de sucesso, com uma inteligência fora do normal, um gênio das finanças, além do charme e carisma capaz de seduzir mulheres e qualquer um que se aproxime dele. Esta premissa – uma droga que muda positivamente a vida de uma pessoa – não é discutida a fundo, nem as implicações morais de uma superinteligência oriunda de um estímulo externo artificial passam por qualquer análise mais detalhada. De qualquer forma, o roteiro possibiliza um vislumbre da natureza das escolhas de um indivíduo, quando ele não tem mais autonomia sobre suas vontades. Outra coisa: o que um ator do quilate de Robert De Niro está fazendo num papel tão desimportante? A LIRA DO DELÍRIO (BRASIL, 1976) – A sequência inicial do filme de Walter Lima Jr aponta para as escolhas estéticas do diretor: um carnaval de rua, caótico como deve ser, onde se sobressai uma foliã tristonha, na contramão do ambiente de total suposta alegria desmedida, como se simbolizasse a existência do sofrimento e da dor, apesar da alegria institucionalizada da festa de Momo. Na diegese de Walter Lima Jr, a liberdade corporal dos personagens se entrelaça com uma história subdividida em hedonismo exacerbado e as frustrações inevitáveis dos comportamentos inconsequentes de uma juventude marginal ainda imersa pelo peso dos anos de chumbo no Brasil. E são exatamente esses “inadaptados” que representam uma resistência aos valores morais de uma sociedade opressora e injusta, onde se normalizam ações extremas, como o sequestro de uma criança e o assassinato de figuras à margem da burguesia conservadora, como as dos travestis, que representam a dualidade social/sexual que tanto apavora os “cidadãos de bem”.  REPÚBLICA DOS ASSASSINOS (Brasil, 1979) – O filme de Miguel Faria Jr. é um drama que traz elementos que transcendem a narrativa policialesca comum, como o amor bandido e a vingança do oprimido. Tarcísio Meira, como Mateus, divide o protagonismo com o travesti Eloína, interpretado por Anselmo Vasconcelos, que, por sinal, é o elemento-chave da trama, representando uma discussão sobre gênero e sexualidade, coisa rara nos estertores da década de 70. Há uma polaridade (ou bipolaridade) na relação entre Mateus e Eloína que remete à desconstrução do macho latino-americano – ao mesmo tempo em que divide o boudoir com Eloína, ele se relaciona com Marlene (Sandra Bréa) e Regina (Sylvia Bandeira) de maneira autoritária e violenta, reproduzindo seu modus operandi profissional. Com Eloína, Mateus encontra a felicidade na forma de equiparação de potências (Freud, rápido!), como também se vê diante da sua própria destruição como policial corrupto e troglodita sentimental. O roteiro mostra a degradação ética em todos os poderes, seja no midiático, na força policial ou na seara política. BALLERINA (USA, 2025) – Assim como Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence e Alicia Vikander, Ana de Armas agora é uma agente letal, capaz de enfrentar qualquer bandido que ouse ficar à sua frente, nessa passagem de bastão de John Wick, cujos filmes foram perdendo o dinamismo dos dois primeiros. Ana de Armas é uma graça de atriz, tem presença cênica (vejam os 15 minutos dela no último James Bond, uma das poucas coisas boas do filme), mas é muito fofa para um papel que tem na violência estrutural sua maior característica. O roteiro repete a velha fórmula da filha-procurando-vingança-pela-morte-do-pai e não tem o humor natural dos filmes protagonizados por Keanu Reeves. Like Charlize Theron, Jennifer Lawrence, and Alicia Vikander, Ana de Armas is now a lethal agent, capable of facing any bad guy who dares to stand in front of her, in this passing of John Wick’s baton, whose films had lost the dynamism of the first two. Ana de Armas is a cute actress; she has a scenic presence (see her 15 minutes in the last James Bond, one of the few good things in the film), but she is very cute for a role that has structural violence as its greatest characteristic. The script repeats the old formula of the daughter-seeking-revenge-for-the-death-of-the-father and does not have the natural humor of the films starring Keanu Reeves. Prime.

4944 - OS PARQUES NACIONAIS MAIS FASCINANTES DO MUNDO (2022)

 

OS PARQUES NACIONAIS MAIS FASCINANTES DO MUNDO – EPISÓDIO 1 - (OUR GREAT NATIONAL PARKS, USA, 2022) – Netflix’s new five-part documentary series, Our Great National Parks, opens with the gentle shushing of waves, and a drone zooming low over Hawai’i’s Hanauma Bay, where we see a lone figure in a linen shirt, walking slowly over the sand. Wait a minute… that’s former President Barack Obama. When you choose Barack Obama as the voice and face of your new flagship nature documentary, you invite political commentary and (let’s face it) partisan attacks. It’s inevitable. Which makes Our Great National Parks kind of interesting, because it’s a show that wants more from us than your average wildlife series. The Obama choice was deliberate, and not just for PR purposes. The show isn’t about cute, anthropomorphized animals and soaring 4K drone footage—although, to be fair, there’s plenty of both of those. It’s more about us and our relationship with nature. Netflix.

4943 - HIGHLANDER, O GUERREIRO IMORTAL (1984)

HIGHLANDER, O GUERREIRO IMORTAL (HIGHLANDER, USA, 1986) – Filme obrigatório, sempre. Ainda hoje, não há como não se emocionar com a trajetória de Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert, um poço de mistério e desilusão) até o grande gathering em Nova York (onde mais?). As transições de cena são geniais, alternando passado e presente de forma quase poética, tudo isso vitaminado com a trilha sonora inspirada do QUEEN. O tema da imortalidade, talvez, tratado da forma mais original no cinema, é perpassado de dor e frustração, tendo sempre sua natureza ligada às reações de MacCleod diante de mundo contemporâneo: é magistral a sequência inicial, quando ele assiste, condoído, a mais um espetáculo degradante de vale-tudo, no Madison Square Garden. É interessante notar que MacCleod não deseja interferir no presente, ao tentar mudar o passado, mas, sim, refletir sobre a ganância e violência do homem sobre o próprio homem. E, claro, há Sean Connery dando dignidade e energia a seu personagem, Ramirez, a quem é dada a tarefa de instruir MacCleod na sua jornada rumo à eternidade. Após este filme, vieram outras sequências, todas muito ruins, que devem ser esquecidas, pois, como esse primeiro Highlander, só haverá um. A must-see movie, always. 4942 - BORDEL - NOITES PROIBIDAS (1979)

BORDEL – NOITES PROIBIDAS (Brasil, 1979) – Como defender o horror? Como achar as palavras certas para descrever o caos estético e cognitivo? Não... não estou falando dos campos de concentração da WW2, mas sim de um filme chamado BORDEL – NOITES PROIBIDAS, cujo roteiro ( ! ) envolve o jogo do bicho, um cassino clandestino servindo de fachada para um bordel e um garçom que planeja um golpe no patrão, apesar dos avisos de advertência da prostitua Margot (Rossana Ghessa). É necessária uma visão adredemente panglossiana para levar essa produção a sério, pois não há qualquer laivo de bom senso que torne a história minimamente inteligível, além da atuação constrangedora de todo o elenco, o que não é um apanágio só deste filme, mas também de quase toda a produção da época. Num mundo invertido, o destaque é Ruy Leal, no papel de um soi-disant chefe de uma máfia da contravenção e que foi escalado para interagir, digamos, virilmente, com as atrizes do filme, fazendo do ato de assistir a essa tranqueira um exercício de estoicismo do qual não se sai impunemente. I'm not talking about the WW2 concentration camps, but about a movie called BROTHEL – FORBIDDEN NIGHTS, whose script ( ! ) involves the jogo do bicho, a clandestine casino serving as a front for a brothel and a waiter who plans a scam on the boss, despite the warnings of the prostitute Margot (Rossana Ghessa). A Panglossian vision is required to take this production seriously, as there is no hint of common sense that makes the story minimally intelligible, in addition to the embarrassing performance of the entire cast, which is not only a hallmark of this film, but also of almost the entire production of the time. In an upside-down world, maybe in Hawkins, the highlight is Ruy Leal, in the role of a soi-disant boss of a misdemeanor mafia and who was cast to interact, let's say, manly, with the actresses of the film, making the act of watching this junk an exercise in stoicism from which one does not get away with it. A SOMBRA DO COMANDANTE (THE COMMANDANT’S SHADOW, USA, Alemanha, 2024) – Oitenta anos depois, uma sobrevivente de Auschwitz, Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, se encontra com o filho do comandante do campo, Rudolf Höss – a partir daí, o documentário se ocupa em descrever os horrores da WW2, tendo como fio condutor o filho de Höss e o filho deste, representando a terceira geração pós-guerra, que tem sua contrapartida a filha de Anita, uma psicóloga cuja vida também foi afetada pelos acontecimentos da guerra. Depois de ZONA DE INTERESSE, filme de Jonathan Glazer, que retrata a vida idílica da família Höss, ao lado do campo de Auschwitz, ver o depoimento do filho de Höss se torna um exercício interessante. A princípio, ele entra em negação, dizendo que quase não se lembra daquela época, mas, instigado pelo próprio filho, relata ter poucas lembranças da movimentação do campo, embora sua expressão facial teime em dizer o contrário. De qualquer forma, é emocionante o momento em que ele e Anita estão frente a frente, tomando chá, sem saber o certo como lidar com o peso da guerra em ambos.  Eighty years later, an Auschwitz survivor, Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, meets with the son of the camp commandant, Rudolf Höss – from then on, the documentary is busy describing the horrors of WW2, having Höss' son and his son as a common thread, representing the third post-war generation, which has its counterpart Anita's daughter, A psychologist whose life was also affected by the events of the war. After ZONE OF INTEREST, a film by Jonathan Glazer, which portrays the idyllic life of the Höss family, next to the Auschwitz camp, seeing the testimony of Höss' son becomes an interesting exercise. At first, he goes into denial, saying that he almost does not remember that time, but, instigated by his own son, he reports having few memories of the movement of the field, although his facial expression insists on saying otherwise. Anyway, it's exciting the moment when he and Anita are face to face, drinking tea, not knowing the right way to deal with the weight of war on both of them. Netflix.

ENCURRALADA (TRAPPED, USA, 2002) – Este é um filme com bom começo e um péssimo desfecho. É um thriller de suspense, com boas atuações de Charlize Theron e Kevin Bacon, mas com um roteiro que vai acumulando alguns subplots pouco desenvolvidos que comprometem a trama. O filme começa com um potencial psicodrama, com jogos mentais entre os personagens, mas, no seu terço final, descamba para o espetáculo hollywoodiano forçado, envolvendo uma perseguição numa autoestrada que destrói a já combalida credibilidade do roteiro. This is a movie with a good start and a bad ending. It is a suspense thriller, with good performances by Charlize Theron and Kevin Bacon, but with a script that accumulates some underdeveloped subplots that compromise the plot. The film begins with a potential psychodrama, with mind games between the characters, but, in its final third, it descends into a forced Hollywood spectacle, involving a chase on a highway that destroys the already weakened credibility of the script. 4939 - DINHERO SUSPEITO (2026)

 

DINHEIRO SUSPEITO (THE RIP, USA, 2026) – Matt Damon é obrigatório, mas este é um filme menor na sua carreira: ele é um policial de Miami que, junto com seu parceiro (Ben Affleck, péssimo como sempre) e outros agentes, encontra milhões de dólares numa casa usada como esconderijo de marginais. A descoberta leva à desconfiança de todos – quem estaria envolvido na origem deste dinheiro? O filme começa bem, mantém o ritmo até o terceiro terço, para depois cair numa estrutura previsível e formulaica. Damon coloca gravitas e dignidade ao seu personagem e é sempre um destaque em todo filme de que participa. Affleck também não decepciona: é ruim do início ao fim. TR é um típico produto mediano da Netflix e foi feito para cair rapidamente no olvido.  Matt Damon is mandatory, but this is a minor film in his career: he is a Miami cop who, along with his partner (Ben Affleck, bad as always) and other agents, finds millions of dollars in a house used as a hiding place for criminals. The discovery leads to everyone's distrust – who would be involved in the origin of this money? The film starts well, keeps the pace until the third part, and then falls into a predictable and formulaic structure. Damon brings gravitas and dignity to his character and is always a highlight in every film he participates in. Affleck doesn't disappoint either: he is bad from start to finish. TR is a typical average Netflix product and was made to quickly fall into oblivion.

4938 - MAGNUM - TEMP 1 - EPISÓDIO 10 (1981)

MAGNUM – TEMP 1 – EPISÓDIO 10 – LEST WE FORGET (USA, 1981) – Este é um dos melhores episódios da primeira temporada de MAGNUM, porque a história envolve dois icônicos atores cujos filhos, também atores, fazem seus papéis na juventude, com um roteiro que fecha a história: Jose Ferrer e June Lockhart, a Maureen Robinson de PERDIDOS NO ESPAÇO, o que, para mim, tem um significado especial. O episódio traz um dos temas clássicos de Donald P. Bellisario, o produtor da série: o amor que atravessa o tempo. A ação remete a flashbacks da WW2 e um mistério inescrutável, na medida em que Magnum procura a mulher desaparecida há 40 anos e eventualmente descobre a verdade dos dias que seguiram ao ataque de Pearl Harbor. This is one of the best episodes of the first season of MAGNUM, because the story involves two iconic actors whose children, also actors, play their roles in their youth, with a script that closes the story: Jose Ferrer and June Lockhart, Maureen Robinson from LOST IN SPACE, which, for me, has a special meaning. The episode brings one of the classic themes of Donald P. Bellisario, the producer of the series: love across the ages. ABIGAIL (USA, 2023) – Essa comédia de terror começa com o sequestro da filha de um homem poderoso por um grupo de criminosos, antes de levá-la para uma mansão isolada, sem saber dos perigos a que estavam expostos. O filme é divertido e tem um ritmo frenético bem ajustado a uma história que se passa quase o tempo todo dentro de um espaço confinado. Há uma combinação equilibrada entre o suspense e o gore explícito, sempre com o foco nos personagens, até o deslindamento da trama, já no terço final. ABIGAIL é assustadoramente engraçado e original dentro de uma premissa já muito explorada no cinema de horror, na qual acabamos torcendo pelos bandidos, diante de uma ameaça maior. This horror comedy begins with the kidnapping of a powerful man's daughter by a group of criminals, before taking her to a secluded mansion, unaware of the dangers to which they are exposed. The film is entertaining and has a frenetic pace well-suited to a story that takes place almost entirely inside a confined space. There is a balanced combination of suspense and explicit gore, always focusing on the characters, until the unraveling of the plot, which begins in the final third. ABIGAIL is frighteningly funny and original within a premise already much explored in horror cinema, in which we end up rooting for the bad guys, in the face of a greater threat. Netflix.

4936 - DE VOLTA PARA O FUTURO (1995)

DE VOLTA PARA O FUTURO (BACK TO THE FUTURE, USA, 1985) – Quarenta anos depois do seu lançamento, BTTF ainda é um filme perfeito para o entretenimento descompromissado, típico da Sessão da Tarde. Michael J. Fox e Christopher Lloyd, com seus personagens, se tornaram ícones dos anos 80 e, até hoje, são facilmente reconhecíveis no universo da cultura pop. Revisto agora, o filme levanta outras questões, como o Complexo de Édipo numa versão mais light, o bullying naturalizado nas escolas, os possíveis resultados no presente de uma viagem no tempo e os inevitáveis conflitos entre gerações. Robert Zemeckis não só mostra uma excelente pegada cômica, mas também mostra a abordagem humanística de um Frank Capra. O filme, de fato, lembra IT’S A WONDERFUL WORLD, no sentido de ter um protagonista que começa a ter uma nova visão da vida, depois de uma intervenção sobrenatural ou cientificamente avançada, como é o caso aqui. O roteiro se desenvolve de maneira leve e constante, como se tivesse passado pelo Capacitor de Fluxo, com boas piadas (que não envelheceram) e estrutura palatável a todos os gostos. Um clássico. Forty years after its release, BTTF is still a perfect movie for the uncompromising entertainment typical of the Sessão da Tarde. Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, with their characters, became icons of the 80s and, to this day, are easily recognizable in the pop culture universe. Reviewed now, the film raises other issues, such as the Oedipus Complex in a lighter version, bullying naturalized in schools, the possible results in the present of time travel and the inevitable conflicts between generations. Robert Zemeckis not only shows an excellent comic grip, but also shows the humanistic approach of a Frank Capra. The film, in fact, resembles IT'S A WONDERFUL WORLD in the sense of having a protagonist who begins to have a new vision of life, after a supernatural or scientifically advanced intervention, as is the case here. The script develops in a light and constant way, as if it had passed through the Flux Capacitor, with good jokes (which have not aged) and a structure palatable to all tastes. A classic. Prime. 

4935 - PODEROSA AFRODITE (1995)

   

 PODEROSA AFRODITE (MIGHTY APHRODITE, USA 1995) – Quando Lenny (Woody Allen) descobre que seu filho adotivo é um gênio, ele passa a procurar a mãe biológica, Linda (Mira Sorvino, em total compatibilidade com o nome do personagem), uma prostituta de bom coração e sonhos muito distantes da dinâmica perversa de uma cidade como Nova York. Woody Allen constrói uma história sobre o destino, a hereditariedade e as frágeis relações afetivas numa megalópole, principalmente quando faz de Linda o centro motivador das ações dos personagens: ela representa tanto o bas fond (a indústria pornográfica), quanto a ingenuidade red neck que, de certo modo, ameniza o julgamento de suas ações (incluso aqui a doação do filho para adoção). Mira Sorvino, realmente, aproveita as dimensões várias de seu personagem (ganhou o Oscar) e faz de Linda um objeto de desejo que transcende o universo da prostituição para chegar ao imaginário de uma casa no campo, uma vida bucólica e à total naturalização do ato paradoxal (no contexto do roteiro) de abdicar do filho para poder ter uma família. When Lenny (Woody Allen) discovers that his adopted son is a genius, he starts looking for the boy’s birth mother, Linda (Mira Sorvino, in full compatibility with the character's name), a prostitute with a good heart and dreams far away from the perverse dynamics of a city like New York. Woody Allen builds a story about fate, heredity and fragile affective relationships in a megalopolis, especially when he makes Linda the motivating center of the character’s actions: she represents both the bas fond (the pornographic industry) and the red neck naivety that, in a way, softens the judgment of her actions (including here the donation of her son for adoption). Mira Sorvino really takes advantage of the various dimensions of her character (she won the Oscar) and makes Linda an object of desire that transcends the universe of prostitution to reach the imaginary of a house in the countryside, a bucolic life and the total naturalization of the paradoxical act (in the context of the script) of giving up her son in order to have a family. 4934 - UMA BATALHA ATRÁS DA OUTRA (2025)

UMA  BATALHA APÓS A OUTRA (ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER, USA, 2025) – Um fato é inquestionável: como filma bem Paul Thomas Anderson! Difícil achar um filme dele com uma artesania que não seja, no mínimo, perfeita. OBAA mostra a repercussão das lutas que, nos EUA, levaram à perseguição de imigrantes, à supremacia branca entre os que detêm o poder econômico e político, além da ocupação militar violenta de cidades pelos mais arbitrários motivos. Isso tudo é mostrado através de sequências estupendas, cada uma em uma locação diferente, todas com linguagem própria e atreladas visceralmente ao roteiro. Tudo converge para o movimento da narrativa e o aprofundamento dos personagens, seja pela música visual das cenas, sublinhadas pela trilha intrusiva de Johnny Greenwood, seja pela quase independência dos personagens e as improváveis situações em que se inserem. Claro que a perseguição de carro, numa estrada construída sobre colinas – ultrajante de tão simples quanto genial na sua consecução -, serve como metáfora da vida, que nos atravessa como uma lança, quando vemos que só temos o momento presente – nunca o que já passou, nunca o que ainda virá. O caráter político do roteiro fica claro quando alude a paralelos políticos atuais, sem cair no cinema panfletário, mesmo quando dá uma roupagem cartunesca ao grupo de supremacistas brancos, num governo fascista e persecutório, em contrapartida à perda da inocência dos membros da resistência, lado no qual PTA claramente se coloca (assim como qualquer pessoa decente). No pêndulo ideológico, o filme submete a extrema-direita americana à sátira implacável, com seus personagens caricatos cujo método de ação é violência primitiva, e sublinha o ritual de passagem dos membros da resistência, desconstruindo sua visão de mundo romantizada. Destarte, o filme não precisa apontar o dedo para a distopia fascista americana (e de grande parte do mundo), porque o espectador não tem como não identificar na história ressonâncias bem palpáveis desta situação. No fim, a mensagem é clara: o autoritarismo vai sempre existir, para ser combatido e, se tudo der certo, derrotado. O filme também é um aviso para as futuras gerações que comporão a resistência a tudo que impede o ser humano de ser humano. Por isso, deleite-se com Sean Penn, insopitável no seu personagem, ao mesmo tempo intimidante e patético, assustador e infantil, desprezível e quase humano; com Leonardo DiCaprio em um dos seus melhores trabalhos (o que não é pouca coisa) e com Chase Infinity, mostrando que a juventude ainda pode ter um papel essencial na mudança do mundo. One fact is unquestionable: how well Paul Thomas Anderson films! It's hard to find a film of his with craftsmanship that isn't, at the very least, perfect. OBAA shows the repercussions of the struggles that, in the USA, led to the persecution of immigrants, white supremacy among those who hold economic and political power, and the violent military occupation of cities for the most arbitrary reasons. This is all shown through stupendous sequences, each in a different location, all with their own language and viscerally linked to the script. Everything converges to the movement of the narrative and the deepening of the characters, whether by the visual music of the scenes, underlined by Johnny Greenwood's intrusive score, or by the almost independence of the characters and the improbable situations in which they are inserted. Of course, the car chase, on a hilly road – outrageous as it is, as simple as it is genius in its achievement – serves as a metaphor for life, which pierces us like a spear, when we see that we only have the present moment – never what has already passed, never what is yet to come. The political character of the script is clear when it alludes to current political parallels, without falling into pamphleteer cinema, even when it gives a cartoonish look to the group of white supremacists, in a fascist and persecutory government, in contrast to the loss of innocence of the members of the resistance, a side on which PTA clearly places itself (as well as any decent person). On the ideological pendulum, the film submits the American far right to ruthless satire, with its caricatured characters whose method of action is primitive violence, and underlines the rite of passage of the members of the resistance, deconstructing their romanticized worldview. Thus, the film does not need to point a finger at the fascist dystopia in the United States (and in much of the world), because the viewer cannot help but identify in the story very palpable resonances of this situation. In the end, the message is clear: authoritarianism will always exist, to be fought and, if all goes well, defeated. The film is also a warning to future generations about the resistance to everything that prevents human beings from being human. So, delight yourself with Sean Penn, indomitable in his character, at the same time intimidating and pathetic, scary and childish, despicable and almost human; with Leonardo DiCaprio in one of his best works (which is no small feat), and with Chase Infinity, showing that youth can still play an essential role in changing the world. 4933 - O MONSTRO EM MIM - 8 EPISÓDIOS (2025)

 

MONSTRO EM MIM – 8 EPISÓDIOS (THE BEAST IN ME, USA, 2025) – Uma escritora, Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes), começa a ter uma má impressão do novo vizinho, aparentemente um milionário misterioso, Niles Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), que, depois de uma aproximação meio forçada, lhe pede para escrever um livro sobre sua vida. Claro que as coisas não vão ser tão fáceis assim – Niles tem um passado suspeito, enquanto Aggie precisa lidar com o trauma de ter perdido o filho pequeno num acidente, além da esposa, numa separação que ela ainda não superou. A trama é bem urdida, com bons ganchos entre um episódio e o outro, todos bem construídos, especialmente o sétimo, dirigido por Antonio Campos, filho de Lucas Mendes. Porém, os close-ups em Claire Danes parecem exagerados, prejudicando sua atuação, quando não assustando os espectadores, mais que o mefistofélico Niles. Jonathan Banks, de BREAKING BAD e BETTER CALL SAUL é um destaque, como o pai que tenta controlar o filho playboy.  A writer, Aggie Wiggs (Claire Danes), begins to have a bad impression of her new neighbor, apparently a mysterious millionaire, Niles Jarvis (Matthew Rhys), who, after a somewhat forced approach, asks her to write a book about his life. Of course, things won't be that easy – Niles has a suspicious past, while Aggie has to deal with the trauma of losing her young son in an accident, as well as his wife, in a separation she still hasn't overcome. The plot is well built, with good hooks between one episode and the next, all well-constructed, especially the seventh, directed by Antonio Campos, son of Lucas Mendes. However, the close-ups on Claire Danes seem exaggerated, harming her performance, when not scaring the viewers, more than the Mephistophelean Niles. Jonathan Banks, from BREAKING BAD and BETTER CALL SAUL is a highlight, as the father who tries to control his playboy son. Netflix.

4832 - O JARDIM DOS DESEJOS (2022)

 

JARDIM DOS DESEJOS (MASTER GARDENER, USA, 2022) – O excelente Joel Edgerton é Narvel Roth, um jardineiro que trabalha para uma ricaça esnobe, Norma Haverhill (Sigourney Weaver). De início, nada se sabe sobre seu passado, mas seu presente é apenas cuidar das flores para exposições e, de alguma forma, agradar a patroa com alguns favores sexuais. Com a chegada da sobrinha-neta de Norma, Maya (Quintessa Swindell), acontece uma ruptura na vida pacata de Narvel que, a partir daí, redimensiona seus valores, enquanto resolve os fantasmas de seu passado. O filme de Paul Schrader é um slow-burner com laivos de uma história enigmática, com a possibilidade de alguns bons estudos de personagens, como o de Narvel, sempre numa chave minimalista e instigante. Sigourney Weaver não tem muito o que fazer com o papel limitado dado a ela. Por outro lado, Quintessa Swindell consegue encapsular em sua Maya um torvelinho de afetos reconstruídos dos escombros emocionais do seu passado. Vale pelo final digno de um jardim bem cuidado, como deve ser a vida. The excellent Joel Edgerton is Narvel Roth, a gardener who works for a wealthy snob, Norma Haverhill (Sigourney Weaver). At first, nothing is known about his past, but his present is just taking care of the flowers for exhibitions and, somehow, pleasing his mistress with some sexual favors. With the arrival of Norma's great-niece, Maya (Quintessa Swindell), there is a rupture in Narvel's quiet life, who, from then on, reevaluates his values, while resolving the ghosts of his past. Paul Schrader's film is a slow-burner with hints of an enigmatic story, with the possibility of some good character studies, such as Narvel's, always in a minimalist and thought-provoking key. Sigourney Weaver doesn't have much to do with the limited role given to her. On the other hand, Quintessa Swindell manages to encapsulate in her Maya a whirlwind of affections reconstructed from the emotional rubble of her past. It is worth the dignified end of a well-kept garden, as life should be. TC Cult.

4831 - PROJECT MOONBASE (1953)

 

PROJECT MOONBASE (USA, 1953) – A Guerra Fria estava nos seus primórdios, e o cinema começava a refletir (não no sentido crítico) sobre a “ameaça comunista” nos EUA, principalmente dentro da área militar. Assim sendo, no futuro ano de 1970, um foguete é mandado para a Lua, com a missão de iniciar a construção de uma estação que protegesse os Estados Unidos de mísseis inimigos (e, provavelmente, vermelhos). E quem vemos no comando do projeto? Ninguém menos do que Hayden Rorke, muito antes de ser o Dr. Bellows, de Jeannie, já naquela época se preocupando com quem vai para o espaço. Sim, o filme é tosco, como muitos do gênero daquela época – só para constar, os “astronautas” vestiam camiseta e bermuda ( ! ),  mas também é interessante para vermos como era a concepção dos roteiristas sobre o futuro da exploração espacial. The Cold War was in its infancy, and cinema was beginning to reflect (not in the critical sense) on the "Communist threat" in the USA, especially within the military area. Therefore, in the year 1970, a rocket was sent to the Moon, with the mission of starting the construction of a station that would protect the United States from enemy (and probably red) missiles. And who do we see in charge of the project? None other than Hayden Rorke, long before he was Jeannie's Dr. Bellows, was already at that time worrying about who would go into space. Yes, the film is crude, like many of the genre of that time – just for the record, the "astronauts" wore T-shirts and shorts ( ! ), but it is also interesting to see how the writers' conception of the future of space exploration was. 4830 - PROFESSOR POLVO (2022)

 

PROFESSOR POLVO (MY OCTOPUS TEACHER, África do Sul, 2020) – Craig Foster é um cineasta cuja decisão de mergulhar perto da sua casa à beira-mar entra em contato com um polvo e passa a acompanhar, diariamente, durante um ano, a rotina do molusco, desenvolvendo uma relação afetiva tão inesperada quanto poética. Belas imagens submarinas e o testemunho sincero de Foster (não poderia haver nome mais apropriado) tornam o documentário muito agradável, especialmente para quem já percebeu que a vida na Terra é – ou pelo menos deveria ser – uma comunhão entre todas as espécies. Craig Foster is a filmmaker whose decision to dive near his home by the sea leads him to encounter an octopus and start following it daily for a year, observing the mollusk's routine and developing an affectionate relationship that is as unexpected as it is poetic. Beautiful underwater images and Foster's sincere testimony (there couldn't be a more appropriate name for this man) make the documentary very enjoyable, especially for those who have already realized that life on Earth is – or at least should be – a communion between all species. 4829 - GOLIAS CONTRA O DRAGÃO (1960)

 

GOLIAS CONTRA O DRAGÃO (LA VENDETTA DI ERCOLE, Itália, 1960) – Como a Universal detinha os direitos sobre o nome “Hércules”, o título original foi alterado e o nome do personagem principal foi trocado por Golias, o que causa estranheza, num filme, por si só, bem estranho, mas, definitivamente, muito divertido. Mark Forest carrega o filme nos ombros (entendeu, hein, hein?), no papel título, com certa ligação visceral com o personagem que ele já repetira em outros filmes do gênero. Sim, é tudo ruim, mas como não se render à tentativa desta produção italiana de retratar o universo mitológico, com seríssimas restrições orçamentárias, apanágio da produção eurotrash da época, com direito a dragões e morcegos gigantes feitos por Carlo Rambaldi, de E.T. A maior curiosidade, porém, é a presença no elenco de Broderick Crawford, um ator com certo prestígio que, provavelmente, estava com os boletos atrasados. O SOBERANO (DER HERRSCHER, Alemanha, 1937) – O filme de Veit Harlan é sobre um proprietário de uma siderúrgica (Emil Jannings) que planeja se afastar dos negócios, depois da morte da esposa, mas volta atrás quando percebe a ganância dos diretores. O filme não é apenas uma ode à utopia völkisch da “comunidade do povo” e sua idealização do empreendedor consciente e preocupado como a comunidade racial. Fica clara no roteiro a ideia de que as pessoas devem ser comandadas por um líder – numa nítida referência a Hitler, cujo Departamento de Propaganda, chefiado por Goebbels, havia interferido na produção. Veit Harlan's film is about a steel mill owner (Emil Jannings) who plans to step away from the business after his wife's death, but backtracks when he realizes the greed of the directors. The film is not just an ode to the völkisch utopia of the "people’s community” and its idealization of the conscious and concerned entrepreneur as the embodiment of the racial community. The script is clear about the idea that people should be commanded by a leader, in a clear reference to Hitler, whose Propaganda Department, headed by Goebbels, had interfered in the production.
