REDE DE INTRIGAS (NETWORK, USA, 1976) – Um âncora famoso e popular, Howard Beale (Peter Finch), diante do aviso de que vai ser demitido – a audiência do noticiário que ele apresenta está caindo a cada dia – anuncia no ar que vai se matar diante das câmeras dali a duas semanas. A princípio, a direção da emissora fica em polvorosa, mas percebe que a popularidade do programa aumenta a cada dia e resolve manter Beale no ar, dando a ele liberdade para falar o que quiser. Este excelente filme de Sidney Lumet é premonitório em vários aspectos, principalmente na instrumentalização da desgraça humana para fins lucrativos e na manipulação da audiência dos programas de TV. O personagem de Faye Dunaway, Diana Christiansen, uma executiva da emissora, sempre ávida pelos números da audiência, disposta a tudo para atingir seus objetivos (é dela a ideia de manter Beale no ar) tem uma importância fulcral, pois evidencia a desumanização da empresa, sem qualquer critério razoável, e leva a história a tangenciar a sátira ao explorar descaradamente a loucura de Beale, mesmo questionando ao mesmo tempo os decadentes pilares éticos da televisão. O grande Robert Duvall é outro executivo sem qualquer escrúpulo diante da possibilidade do suicídio de Beale, e William Holden tem uma atuação estupenda, especialmente quando começa um affair com Diana, achando que se envolver com o diabo pode ser o amor que ele deseja, até a sua fala final, quando diz a ela: “Não há nada em você com que eu possa conviver”. Um dos grandes filmes da Nova Hollywood. Obrigatório. The great Robert Duvall is another unscrupulous executive about the possibility of Beale's suicide, and William Holden has a stupendous performance, especially when he begins an affair with Diana, thinking that getting involved with the devil may be the love he wants, until his final line, when he tells her: "There is nothing in you that I can live with".
