Directed by Dennis Hopper, ER is often considered one of the most representative films of the American counterculture of the 1960s, in addition to being one of the initial milestones of the New Hollywood. More than a road movie, the film works as a portrait of the cultural and political tensions of the United States in a period marked by generational conflicts, civil rights movements, protests against the Vietnam War, and questioning of traditional values. At the same time, the film presents a pessimistic view of the real chances of triumph of this counterculture in the face of the persistent force of conservatism. Easy Rider presents the counterculture as a legitimate search for freedom, authenticity, and new forms of existence. However, the film adopts a deeply skeptical view of the possibilities of success of this project. The narrative shows that conservative values continue to be rooted in the institutions and social imaginary of the United States, reacting with fear and violence in the face of difference. Thus, the work ends as a kind of counterculture elegy: a movement capable of inspiring cultural transformation, but unable to overcome the conservative forces that continue to define the limits of American society. In a way, ER may have been the inspiration for Carlos Bini's 1972 film Geração Bendita, which was shot in Friburgo and had the same premise of a conservative city disapproving of the arrival of a group of hippies.

5075 - THE CYCLE (2026)
Clássicos como The Wolf Man (1941), An American Werewolf in London (1981) e The Howling (1981) enfatizam a transformação física e o horror corporal. Directed by Jordan Downey, The Cycle starts from an unusual structure for the werewolf subgenre: instead of immediately introducing the creature, the film initially develops as a crime thriller and a forensic investigation. The plot follows Megan Garland (Deborah Ann Woll, Jessica, from TRUE BLOOD), a forensic anthropologist forced to confront her missing father's past when his body is linked to a series of brutal deaths. It is commonly understood that werewolf movies usually follow a familiar formula: the curse, the transformation and the fight between man and monster. Classics such as The Wolf Man (1941), An American Werewolf in London (1981) and The Howling (1981) emphasize physical transformation and body horror. In The Cycle, however, lycanthropy is initially treated as an investigative enigma. The viewer follows the characters trying to interpret impossible evidence: victims with simultaneously human and animal marks, a corpse that seems to defy decomposition, and a sequence of murders with no rational explanation. The most original element of the film is the central idea proposed by the screenwriters: what would happen if a werewolf continued to undergo transformations even after death? According to the director, this was precisely the premise that gave rise to the project. This conception represents an important break with the cinematic tradition of lycanthropy. Usually, transformation is associated with the conflict between human and animal nature while the individual is alive. In The Cycle, transformation becomes an almost biological and inevitable process, surviving even the death of the host. Another relevant aspect is the appreciation of practical effects. The film was conceived as a tribute to the golden age of makeup effects in the 1980s, when filmmakers such as John Landis and Joe Dante transformed lycanthropy into visual spectacle through painful and grotesque metamorphoses. The Cycle represents one of the most original approaches to lycanthropy in recent years because it shifts the focus from the simple confrontation between man and beast to an investigation into legacy, death, and identity. The idea of the werewolf who continues to transform after death redefines the myth without abandoning its tragic and monstrous roots. At the same time, the film rescues the visual pleasure of practical effects and the physical creature, something that I consider essential. As a result, The Cycle demonstrates that the figure of the werewolf still has the potential to renew itself in contemporary cinema, as long as it is treated not only as a monster, but as a metaphor for what we can never leave behind.
5074 - A JANELA SECRETA (2004)
Directed by David Koepp and starring Johnny Depp, and based on the short story Secret Window, Stephen King's Secret Garden is a psychological thriller that can be interpreted as a profound reflection on the relationship between writer and character. In this regard, the film suggests that the boundary between creator and creature can dissolve completely, leading to a fusion of the author's identity with his own inventions. The film can be read as an extreme metaphor for literary creation. When a writer creates compelling characters, he often projects parts of himself onto them: fears, desires, impulses, and conflicts. John Shooter (John Turturro) represents precisely one of these projections, but taken to the limit. Unlike the romantic image of the writer who fully controls his stories, The Secret Window suggests that artistic creation can be a dangerous process. The author does not only invent characters; he divides his own personality between various narrative voices. Thus, the film is more than a thriller about a split personality. It works as an allegory of the act of writing and the complex relationship between author and character. John Shooter represents a fragment of Mort Rainey’s (Depp) imagination that acquires autonomy until it consumes the creator himself. In the end, the work suggests that the most dangerous characters are not those we consciously invent, but those who are born from the dark regions of the mind and who, once created, can take control of the story. This reading transforms the film into an unsettling reflection on artistic creation: sometimes, the writer does not write his characters; it is the characters who owns the writer.
