O GUARDA-COSTAS (THE BODYGUARD, USA, 1992) – Este é um filme em que tudo deu certo, quando o conjunto da obra parecia apontar para um fracasso inevitável. Está ali – de uma forma talvez involuntária – algo que atrai nossa atenção logo de início. Afinal, quem não precisa de proteção neste mundo? Este, a meu ver, é o principal apelo de um roteiro previsível e, convenhamos, bem pouco original. Mas nada disso importa diante da química entre Kevin Costner e Whitney Houston (“Houston, temos um problema”), uma trilha sonora pra lá de melosa e, especialmente para mim, a presença de Ralph Waite – o patriarca de OS WALTONS -, também aqui vivendo a figura paterna de Costner. Ele poderia ter tido mais tempo em cena, mas arrasa na sequência da casa no campo, para onde Costner e Houston vão depois das ameaças começarem a escalar. O GUARDA-COSTA invoca um sentimento primal atrelado à necessidade de se proteger instintivamente de um perigo iminente, mas nem sempre definido, sensação mais comum hoje do que seria o normal (aqui, abre-se a discussão sobre o que é ou não normal). This is a film in which everything worked out, when the body of work seemed to point to an inevitable failure. There is something that attracts our attention right from the start. After all, who doesn't need protection in this world? This, in my view, is the main appeal of a predictable and, let's face it, very unoriginal script. But none of that matters in the face of the chemistry between Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston (“Houston, we have a problem"), a very mellow soundtrack and, especially for me, the presence of Ralph Waite – the patriarch of THE WALTONS – also here playing Costner's father figure. He could have had more time on the scene, but he rocks in the sequence at the country house, where Costner and Houston go after the threats start to escalate. The BODYGUARD invokes a primal feeling linked to the need to instinctively protect oneself from an imminent, but not always defined, danger, a sensation more common today than would be normal (here, the discussion about what is or is not normal is opened).
