TRATAMENTO DE CHOQUE (ANGER MANAGEMENT, USA, 2003) – Há dois destaques neste filme: a hilariante atuação de Jack Nicholson e, simplesmente, Marisa Tomei. Nicholson, como sempre, rouba todas as cenas com seu timing perfeito de comédia. A participação de Woody Harrelson é também engraçadíssima. Claro, January Jones causa tanto impacto, num papel parecido com o seu em SIMPLESMENTE AMOR, que fica difícil encontrar um parâmetro estético para defini-la. Two highlights in this movie: Jack Nicholson’s hilarious performance and simply Marisa Tomei. Nicholson, as always, steals all the scenes he is in with his perfect comedy timing. Woody Harrelson’s part is irresistibly funny. Of course, January Jones has such impact on us, on a role similar to hers in ACTUALLY LOVE, that is becomes difficult to find an aesthetic parameter to define her. Looke.

TWO AND A HALF MEN, TEMP 8, 16 EPISÓDIOS (USA, 2010) – A briga entre Charlie Sheen e Chuck Lorre abreviou essa temporada arrastada, pouco inspirada, na qual se nota claramente em alguns episódios a estado crítico de Sheen. As melhores cenas são de Alan com Lyndsey. O súbito interesse de Charlie por Rose parece meio forçado e aponta para uma mudança improvável da sua personalidade hedonista. The fight between Charlie and Chuck Lorre shortened this uninspired season in which it is clear Sheen’s critical condition. The best scenes are with Alan and Lyndsey. Charlie’s sudden interest in Rose seems a little pushy and points to an improbable change in his hedonist personality. Prime.

DRIVE MY CAR (DORAIBU MAI KÂ, Japão, 2021) – Obra-prima do cinema contemporâneo, DRIVE MY CAR é uma aula de como narrar uma história sobre a aceitação e sobre o entendimento de um sofrimento profundo causado por perdas irremediáveis. Além disso, é também sobre a importância de ouvir o outro no que isso tem de entrega e empatia. A impressionante tapeçaria dramática do diretor Ryûsuke Hamaguchi é tecida a partir de detalhes sutis extraídos principalmente do relacionamento do personagem principal, o diretor de teatro, e de sua motorista quase invisível e responsável por guiá-lo pelas ruas limpíssimas de Hiroshima – eles dois e a cidade traumatizados por tragédias profundas. Atenção para a cena final da peça, em que a atriz muda faz um lindo e emocionante discurso com a linguagem de sinais. Simplesmente maravilhoso. Masterpiece of the contemporary cinema, DRIVE MY CAR is a class of how to narrate a story about acceptance and understanding of how deep sorrow can be due to irremediable losses. Besides, it also about the importance of listening to each other with empathy. The director’s impressive dramatic tapestry, woven out of subtle details extracted from the relationship of the main character, the theater director, and his almost invisible driver in charge of driving him through the streets of Hiroshima – them both and the city traumatized by deep scarring tragedies. Attention to the final scene of the play, in which the actress makes a beautiful and moving speech with sign language. Simply wonderful. Mubi.

FUGA DE SOBIBOR (ESCAPE FROM SOBIBOR, USA, 1987) – Produção para a TV sobre a maior fuga de prisioneiros de um campo de concentração na WW2, com Alan Arkin, Rutger Hauer e Joanna Pacula. One of the most terrifying accounts of the atrocities which took place during World War II this is one of the best films best about the Nazi holocaust, and the atrocities committed in the concentration camps. Based on a true story of a heroic uprising in one of these camps of death and horror, it was also a tribute to those who died and survived at Sobibor and the other death and labor camps during World War II.  UM BOM ANO (A GOOD YEAR, UK, 2006) – Este filme de Ridley Scott é sobre como um fato inusitado e precioso do cotidiano pode transformar a vida de uma pessoa. Russel Crowe é Max, um operador do sistema financeiro que herda uma vinícola do seu tio em Provença, e o fato precioso é Marion Cotillard. Embora o roteiro seja um pouco irregular, entre um drama existencial e uma comédia de costumes, a história toma uma dimensão reflexiva, entre uma e outra situação engraçada, principalmente por causa do cenário deslumbrante e de Marion Cotillard, cuja presença na nossa vida faria qualquer ano ser muito mais que bom. This Ridley Scott’s movie is about how an unexpected daily fact can change a person’s life. Russel Crowe is Max, a British investment broker, who inherits his uncle’s chateau and vineyard in Provence, and the precious daily fact is Marion Cotillard. Although the script is a little bit irregular, swinging between existential drama and comedy, the story tends to be reflexive, mainly because of the dazzling landscape and Marion Cotillard, whose presence in our lives would make any year much more than good.   A ENTREGA (THE DROP, USA, 2014) – Último filme do inesquecível James Gandolfini, A ENTREGA gira em torno do terror provocado por uma máfia chechena no Brooklin, depois do assalto a um bar pertencente a eles e gerido por dois primos, Bob (Tom Hardy) e Marv (Gandolfini). O roteiro é bem simplificado, apesar da estereotipagem de alguns personagens (os maus, principalmente). É aí que reside a maior qualidade do filme, no qual a presença de Jim, magnética e fascinante, é o fator de maior emoção. Hardy tem uma atuação contida, como sempre costuma fazer, mesmo nas cenas mais gongóricas. James Gandolfini’s last movie, THE DROP is about a Chechen mafia in Brooklin, after a robbery managed by two cousins, Bob (Tom Hardy) and Marv (Gandolfini). There is no attempt at the grandiose here, despite all the history and slightly exaggerated characters involved (mostly bad ones). And that's the beauty of the movie, which manages not just realism but a welcome tenderness amidst all the darkness and bad intentions. The one bright spot is, tragically, Gandolfini, who manages to be really funny even as he about to do terrible things. Hardy is just the opposite, showing a huge heart with utter sobriety even as he, too, is going to do terrible things. Disney Plus.

APOCALYPSE – 6 EPISÓDIOS (França, 2009) - This is a World War 2 documentary like no other. It contains a brilliant musical overture, often haunting but superbly executed. The Second World War (2009) is a six-part French documentary about the Second World War. The documentary is composed exclusively of footage of the war filmed by war correspondents, soldiers, resistance fighters, and private citizens. The series is shown in color, with the black and white footage fully colorized, save for some original color footage. The only exception to the treatment is most Holocaust scenes, which are presented in the original black and white. The documentary shows the development of the Second World War chronologically and interestingly. It is narrated from a very objective point of view and therefore the educational level is very high. YouTube.

4473 - SUNSHINE - ALERTA SOLAR (2007)

 

SUNSHINE, ALERTA SOLAR (SUNSHINE, USA, 2007) – Ficção científica com Cillian Murphy e Chris Evans (antes de Thomas Shelby e Capitão América) no comando de uma missão para reacender o sol com uma bomba de fissão nuclear. Os dois primeiros terços do filme são muito bons, mas o desfecho ficou deslocado. Chris Evans é o destaque, com seu personagem cabeça quente imprimindo uma gravidade essencial ao seu papel. Sci-fi with Cillian Murphy and Chris Evans (before Thomas Shelby and Captain America) leading a mission to reignite the sun with a nuclear fission bomb. The first 2 acts of the film are absolutely engrossing but the last act is out of place. I thought Chris Evans stole the acting honors with his character's hot temper giving gravitas to his role.

OS ASTRONAUTAS – TEMP 1 – 26 EPISÓDIOS -  (IT’S ABOUT TIME, USA, 1966) – Esta série, criada em 1966, se tornou repetitiva depois dos episódios iniciais. Na metade da temporada, o roteiro deu uma guinada, numa tentativa desesperada de melhorar os índices de audiência: os astronautas voltam para 1966, trazendo a família pré-histórica com eles, invertendo o argumento da série. Destaque para Joe E. Ross, como Gronk.  This show, created in 1966, became repetitive after the first episodes. Halfway through the one-season run, the plot was reversed in a desperate attempt to bolster the show's low ratings. The two astronauts, who had traveled back in time, found a way to return to 1966 and took the stone-age family with them.

4471 - MEN (2022)

 MEN (UK, 2022) – Este filme estranho (e até grotesco) aborda vários aspectos: culpa, relações pessoais tumultuadas, masculinidade tóxica e tentativas de explicações psicanalíticas, da maneira mais gráfica possível. Na realidade, MEN se esforça para dar profundidade a vários assuntos, sem, no entanto, explicar quase nada. Protagonizado pela bela e talentosa Jessie Buckley, a história acompanha seu retiro numa casa no interior da Inglaterra, depois de ter vivido uma tragédia pessoal. This weird and even grotesque movie approaches several themes: guilty, relationships, toxic masculinity and attempts to provide psychoanalytical explanations in the most graphic way. All in all, MEN is simultaneously an exercise of too much and yet not enough. Starring the beautiful Jessie Buckley as Harper, "Men" follows her as she retreats to a vacation home in the English countryside after experiencing a personal tragedy. Looke.

4470 - O PIRATA SANGRENTO (1952)

 O PIRATA SANGRENTO (THE CRIMSON PIRATE, USA, 1952) – O Pirata Sangrento é um filme agradável, repleto de ação, suspense, bela fotografia e guarda-roupa caprichado. Os piratas sempre foram um tema recorrente em Hollywood: por isso, esse gênero sempre foi muito colorido e, nesse caso, uma divertida comédia com Burt Lancaster e seu parceiro de 9 filmes, Nick Cravat (ambos tinham sido acrobatas de circo, antes da carreira de ator). Outro destaque é a presença de Christopher Lee, então com 29 anos, cuja carreira havia começado há menos de 5 anos. Lancaster e Cravat têm uma ótima química em cena – são engraçados na hora certa e galantes quando o roteiro pede isso, os vilões são detestáveis, como convém, os cenários deslumbrantes e a história flui naturalmente. Uma curiosidade: o personagem de Nick Cravat é mudo, porque ele tinha um sotaque nova-iorquino muito pesado. Como um dos Produtores, Lancaster não concordava com a perseguição aos comunistas feita pelo Comitê de Atividades Antiamericanas. O filme foi protesto sutil contra essa caça às bruxas, a começar pelo título, que aludia ao “medo vermelho” dos anos 50, e pela história sobre um governo negando direitos à sua população. The Crimson Pirate is a pleasant movie, fraught with action, thrills, bright cinematography and luxurious costumes. Pirates have always been a staple for Hollywood: that’s why these movies are always been colorful and, in this case, also an exciting and entertaining action comedy when Lancaster was fit and vigorous along with his sidekick Nick Cravat (both had been circus partners, as acrobats, prior to doing films). Another highlight is the presence of 29-year-old Christopher Lee who had only been acting less than 5 years before he played the military attaché Joseph in this film. Lancaster and his former circus partner have real chemistry on screen - they're funny when they want to be and dashing when the script calls for it. The heroes are gallant, the villains are nasty and conniving, the costumes and sets are a treat to behold, and the plot moves along briskly. Cravat’s character is mute because he had a thick New York City (Brooklyn to be exact) accent. Co-Producers Burt Lancaster and Harold Hecht were not fans of the witch hunts then taking place of Communists in Hollywood, led by the House Un-American Activities Committee. This movie was a sly slap at those activities, starting with the title, "The Crimson Pirate," during the "red scare" of the 1950's, and continuing with the plot line of a government denying the rights of the people. They got away with it, as almost nobody noticed the political content of a pirate comedy/adventure movie. Looke.

MENSAGEM PARA VOCÊ (YOU’VE GOT MAIL, USA, 1998) – O filme de Nora Ephron envelheceu e não apenas por conta da tecnologia digital, engatinhando na época, retratada no roteiro. A história de YGM ficou presa no fascínio da popularização da internet, quando as pessoas que ainda não expunham sua vida pessoal da forma totalmente aberta como hoje. No entanto, é um filme sobre livrarias, e isso já compensa as eventuais falhas de um roteiro datado. Meg Ryan e Tom Hanks repetem a dupla de SLEEPLESS IN SEATLE, também sobre encontros improváveis. Nora Ephron’s movie aged beyond repair and not only because of the incipient digital technology of the time. The story is trapped in the initial fascination with the internet, when people did not expose themselves the way the do today. However, it a movie about bookstores and this compensates the flaws of the script. Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks repeat the team of SLEEPLESS IN SEATLE, also about improbable encounters.

PROMETHEUS (USA, 2012) – Raramente dá certo tentar explicar o que não deveria ser explicado. Explico: ALIENS é um filme icônico, um marco na história do cinema, um impacto em quem esperava apenas um filme de ficção científica. ALIENS era muito mais que isso. Era, e ainda é, um convite a uma reflexão filosófica-existencial, uma forma de ver as fronteiras do espaço como um risco a ser evitado a todo custo. Diretor do primeiro filme da franquia, Ridley Scott repete aqui o magnífico aparato visual, mas erra num roteiro confuso e repleto de personagens tomando decisões estúpidas (quem não levaria armas para um planeta desconhecido?). PROMETHEUS é um filme tenso, desconfortável também por causa das cenas gongóricas e da mensagem pouco otimista sobre a humanidade. Seldom does an attempt to explain what should not be explained work. I explain: ALIENS is an iconic movie, a landmark in cinema history, something that fascinated those who had expected just a sci-fi movie. ALIENS was much more than that. It was – and still is – an invitation to a philosophical-existential reflection, a way to face the space frontiers as a risk to be avoided at any cost. Director of the first movie of the franchise, Ridley Scott repeats here the magnificent visual apparatus, but drops the ball in a confused script, fraught with characters taking stupid decisions (who would not take a weapon to an unknown planet?). PROMETHEUS is a tense movie, uncomfortable because of the bloody scenes and the less optimist message about mankind. Prime.  

4467 - ROYAL HOTEL (2024)

 

ROYAL HOTEL (USA, 2024) – A presença da talentosa Julia Garner (de OZARK) não é suficiente para justificar um roteiro tão fraco, num filme com boas intenções, como, por exemplo, denunciar o horror do machismo tóxico e o risco ao qual as mulheres são expostas. Atuações fracas, e quase nenhum nexo entre as sequências da história de suas jovens trabalhando num bar no interior da Austrália. Julia Garner’s talento is not enough to justify such a feeble script in a movie that is well-intentioned in its premises as, for instance, denouncing the horrible toxic male chauvinism and the risk women take in male environment. Lousy performances, and almost no connection between the sequences of a story of two young ladies working in a bar in Australia. Prime.

4466 - RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON (1952)

RADAR MEN FROM THE MOON (USA, 1952) – Este seriado da Republic introduz o personagem recorrente – Comando Cody – nos colocando bem no meio da ação, sem maiores explicações. A produção usou cenas de outras aventuras, principalmente O HOMEM FOGUETE e IMPÉRIO SUBMARINO. Atenção para o excepcional trabalho dos irmãos Howard e Theodore Lydecker, cuja habilidade tornou todas as cenas de voo extremamente realistas (é quase impossível achar os fios ligados aos modelos). Seu trabalho é um marco na indústria cinematográfica bem antes dos CGIs e nos fascinou com o sub-voador de VIAGEM AO FUNDO DO MAR, o Protheus, de VIAGEM FANTÁSTICA, e o Júpiter 2, de PERDIDOS NO ESPAÇO. This serial introduces the recurring character of Commando Cody, and puts us right in the middle of the action, without providing extra information. The movie reuses a lot of footage from earlier serials, most prominently KING OF THE ROCKETMEN and THE UNDERSEA KINGDOM. What should be pointed out is the incredible work of brothers Howard and Theodore Lydecker, whose expert flying rigs made all the amazing flights so realistic (it’s almost impossible to find the wires attached to the models!). Their work became the industry standard long before computerized digital effects, and was behind the smooth flights of fancy by famous fantasy crafts such as the Flying Sub in "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea", the Proteus in "Fantastic Voyage" and the Jupiter II in "Lost In Space". 4465 - HITLER E O NAZISMO: COMEÇO, MEIO E FIM - 6 EPISÓDIOS (2024)

HITLER E O NAZISMO: COMEÇO, MEIO E FIM – 6 EPISÓDIOS - (HITLER AND THE NAZIS: EVIL ON TRIAL, USA, 2024) -  Este é um documentário muito bem feito sobre o nazismo, cobrindo a ascensão de Hitler e suas consequências, mas com algumas sérias omissões, como a participação americana no financiamento do nazismo, coisa que pode ter sido propositalmente deixada de lado. Outro detalhe é por que os EUA só entraram na Guerra depois de Pearl Harbor. Porém, a série pisa na bola na escalação de Károly Kozma, certamente escolhido na rua, como Hitler nas dramatizações de alguns eventos. It is a very well-done documentary that shows the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party, covering the aftermath of the devastation that they caused across Europe and gives some insight into what could have happened if they went unchecked. There are some serious omissions: the essential question is not the why of the Nazi rise to power, but where they got all the funding and support. Maybe nobody wanted to disclose the American money in this process. It also is quite telling as to why America was not interested in really getting into the war, until it absolutely had to. The documentary dropped the ball by the atrocious casting of Károly Kozma as Hitler. Someone who was certainly picked up in the streets, and thus giving the main character very little depth. 4464 - CAPTAIN VIDEO (1951)

CAPTAIN VIDEO: MASTER OF STRASTOPHERE (USA, 1951) – Este seriado pouco conhecido da Columbia é parcialmente passado no espaço e está bem abaixo dos seriados da Universal, estes com melhores efeitos especiais (Radar men from the moon) e personagens mais marcantes (Buck Rogers, por exemplo). De qualquer forma, vale a pena ver como a produção lidou com as evidentes restrições orçamentárias. Lesser known Columbia cliff-hanger serial partly set in space. Republic serials had better spaceship effects (see Radar Men from The Moon) and Universal space serials had better characters (see Buck Rogers) but Columbia made a reasonably entertaining serial with Captain Video, Master Of The Stratosphere, despite the evident budget restrictions. GODZILLA X KONG: THE NEW EMPIRE (USA, 2024) – Esse filme é um insulto a dois dos maiores monstros do cinema, especialmente se compararmos ao magnífico GODZILLA MINUS ONE, de produção japonesa. Tudo é tão ruim, tão pobre artisticamente, tão raso em termos de roteiro, que sobra muito pouco a ser dito sobre essa vergonha monstruosa. This movie is an insult to two of the greatest monsters in the cinema universe, especially if compared to the magnificent GODZILLA MINUS ONE. Everything is so lousy, so artistically poor, so incipient in terms of script that not much is left to be said about this monstrous shame. Prime.

TWO AND A HALF MEN TEMP 7 22 EPISÓDIOS (USA, 2010) –  O episódio 11, com Carl Reiner, no qual ele faz um namorado de Evelyn, é o destaque. É impressionante como Reiner é magnético em cena. Uma lenda autêntica do cinema e da Tv Americana, ele nunca se aposentou e trabalhou até morrer, aos 98 anos. Sua participação neste episódio é memorável, especialmente por causa da sua interação com Holland Taylor. Episode 11, “Warning, it’s dirty”, has the wonderful Carl Reiner one of Evelyn’s boyfriends. It’s impressive how Reiner is magnetic in scene. A real legend, Reiner is an important part of American cinema and TV, and never retired from acting and was working right up until his death at the age of ninety-eight. His part in this episode is memorable, especially for his interaction with Holland Taylor. Prime.

THE BIG BANG THEORY TEMP 2 23 EPISÓDIOS (USA, 2008) – Episode 6, “The Cooper-Nowitzki Theorem, is the best in this season: Sheldon is flattered when a graduate student takes a shine on him. However, her extreme devotion becomes too much to handle. It is interesting to notice how Penny is getting increasingly fast into the boys’ nerd environment.
