O AMOR NOS TEMPO DO CÓLERA (LOVE IN THE THE TIME
OF CHOLERA, USA, México, UK, 2007) – O livro de Gabriel Garcia Marquez é o meu romance favorito. A refinada
tradução de Antonio Callado redimensiona o encantamento da história lírica de Florentino
Ariza e Fermina Daza, uma verdadeira arqueologia do amor. O diretor Mike Newell
(QUATRO CASAMENTOS E UM FUNERAL) consegue, em alguns momentos, fazer uma ponte
entre o lirismo do livro e o filme, especialmente na excepcional atuação de
Javier Bardem, no papel do romântico incurável Florentino. É de Bardem a força
motriz do filme: perfeito no pathos do personagem, ao mesmo tempo, doce,
gentil, apaixonado por Fermina (a estonteante Giovanna Mezzogiorno). Um ponto
negativo é a maquiagem – à exceção de Bardem, os outros atores foram
precariamente caracterizados. De qualquer forma, o filme, assim como o livro,
emociona, se não pela crença no amor romântico, mas, principalmente, pela possibilidade
de alguma esperança num mundo, atualmente, desesperado. Gabriel Garcia
Marquez’s book is my favorite. Antonio Callado’s refined translation adds poetry
to Florentino Ariza and Fermina Daza’s story, a true archeology of love. Mike Newell’s
direction occasionally succeeds in connecting the book’s lyrism with the movie,
specially with the excepcional performance of Javier Bardem on the role of the
incurable romantic Florentino. He is the highlight of the movie: perfect in the
character’s gravitas, at the same time sweet, gentle and permanently in love
with Fermina (the stunning Giovanna Mezzogiorno). The low point is the make-up:
except for Bardem, the other actors were poorly characterized. Nevertheless the
movie, as the book, is touching, if not by the belief in romantic love, but,
mainly, for the possibility of some hope in a world currently in despair.
