4460 - ROTA DE FUGA (2013)


ROTA DE FUGA (ESCAPE PLAN, USA, 2013) – A única coisa marcante neste filme é a presença de Sylvester Stallone e Arnold Schwarzenegger, juntos, em cena. O roteiro tenta ser espirituoso, com algumas piadas relacionadas aos dois, mas o resultado não agrada. É outro roteiro com várias falhas e sequências sem conexão. O bom elenco parece perdido numa história pouco original: Sam Neil tem um papel menor, assim como a bela Caitríona Balfe (de OUTLANDER). Jim Caviezel faz um vilão mais parecido com o Balthazar Bratt, de MEU MALVADO FAVORITO. The only remarkable thing in this movie is the presence of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger sharing scenes. The script try to be witty but the result leaves a lot to be desired. It is another script with several flaws and unconnected sequences. The good cast seems lost in a unoriginal story: Sam Neil has a small role, as well as the beautiful Caitríona Balfe (OUTLANDER). Jim Caviezel plays a villain similar to Balthazar Bratt from DESPICABLE ME. Netflix.   



4459 - BEIJOS QUE MATAM (1997)

 


BEIJOS QUE MATAM (KISS THE GIRLS, USA, 1997) – Morgan Freeman é obrigatório. Neste filme, ele é um psicólogo forense investigando um sequestrador em série cujas vítimas são aprisionadas num lugar misterioso. O roteiro não está à altura de Freeman – há vários furos imperdoáveis prejudicando a trama e seu desfecho quase previsível. Ashley Judd faz uma das vítimas e tem total conexão com Freeman em cena. Morgan Freeman is mandatory. In this movie, he is a forensic psychologist that investigates a serial kidnapper whose victims are trapped in a mysterious place. The script is not up to Morgan’s talent – there are many flaws impairing the plot and its almost predicable ending. Ashley Judd is one of the victims and has total connection in scene with Freeman. Netflix.



4458 - JASON BOURNE (2016)


JASON BOURNE (USA, 2016) – Esta ainda continua sendo uma das boas edições da quadrilogia Bourne, apesar da pouca originalidade do roteiro, especialmente por causa da direção de Paul Greengrass e, claro, pela presença de Matt Damon no papel-título. Evidentemente que a CIA está novamente atrás dele: Tommy Lee Jones e Alicia Vikander caçam Bourne de todas as formas possíveis, numa sequência frenética de cenas de ação, característica marcante da série. This is still one of the good editions of the quadrilogy, despite the lack of originality, especially because Paul Greengrass’ direction and, of course, matt Damon’s presence on the main role. Evidently the CIA is chasing him – Tommy Lee Jones and Alicia Vikander do everything to catch him, in plenty action sequences, which are a staple for the Bourne series. Telecine.

4457 - O OBSERVADOR (2022)


O OBSERVADOR (WATCHER, USA, 2022) – Uma americana, Julia (Maika Monroe), se muda para Bucareste com o marido e passa a ser observada por um homem num apartamento em frente ao seu e passa acreditar que ele não é apenas um stalker, mas também um assassino em série. Essa premissa não é nova – Hitchcock já fez isso em JANELA INDISCRETA. Desta forma, o filme trata da paranoia de não saber se os medos da protagonista são verdadeiros ou não e faz isso com eficiência, apesar do desfecho previsível. An American, Julia (Maika Monroe), moves to Bucharest with her husband and finds herself being watched by a man in the adjacent apartment building, and comes to believe that not only he is stalking her but that he is a serial killer. This is not an original premise – Hitchcock had already done it in REAR WINDOW. Therefore, the movie is about the paranoia of whether the fears of the protagonist are real or not, and this is efficiently done, despite the predicable ending. Telecine.

4456 - O12.o HOMEM (2019)


 O 12 HOMEM (Noruega, 2019) – Março, 1943. Doze sabotadores noruegueses, treinados pelso ingleses, são cercados pelas tropas alemãs quando entram na Noruega. Só um consegue escapar, e o filme relata sua fuga num ambiente inóspito até a fronteira da Suécia. É uma história de sobrevivência contra todas as dificuldades possíveis. Não há muita ação, mas vale a pena ver como alguém pode sobreviver quando se está do lado certo de uma guerra. March, 1943. Twelve British-trained Norwegian saboteurs are ambushed by German Troops when they enter Norway. Just one manages to escape until the Swedish border. It is a tale of survival against innumerable odds. It is not an action-packed product, but it is worth seeing how a man can survive when he is on the right side of a war.

4455 - SOB AS ÁGUAS DO SENA (2024)

 


 SOB AS ÁGUAS DO SENA (SOUS LA SEINE, França, 2024) – Este deveria ser um daqueles filmes descritos como “prazeres proibidos”. Mas não é o caso. Apesar da história despretensiosa (e das belas paisagens de Paris), o filme não tem muita coerência científica em relação a uma possível invasão de tubarões no rio Sena. O CGI é precário e sem imaginação, e nada se aproveita no fim. This should have been one of those guilty pleasures. But it is not the case. Despite the unpretentious story (and the beautiful Parisian landscapes), the movie is scientific incoherent about a possible shark invasion in the river Seine. The CGI is poor and unimaginative, and nothing worth seeing is left in the end. Netflix.  


 

4454 - JORNADA PARA O INFERNO (2024)


JORNADA PARA O INFERNO (BUTCHER’S CROSSING, USA, 2024) – Para mim, Nicolas Cage é obrigatório, não importa o filme. Assim como em PIG, ele demonstra aqui sua envergadura dramática, num papel intimista e misterioso, mesmo com o escopo limitado dado ao seu personagem. É uma história sobre a chegada do amadurecimento para um rapaz saído da faculdade, cujo desejo é conhecer o interior do país e ter novas experiências. A fotografia é linda e ajuda a disfarçar algumas falhas do roteiro. No entanto, a atuação contida e intensa de Cage compensa tudo. To me, Nicolas Cage is mandatory, no matter the movie he is in. As in PIG, he displays here his dramatic weight, on a mysterious and intimist role, even with the limited scope given to his character. It is a coming of age story about an Ivy League drop-out whose dream is to travel to Colorado wilderness and have new experiences. The gorgeous photography helps disguise some flaws in the script, but Cage’s performance compensates everything. Telecine.

TWISTER (USA, 1996) – É impressionante como o filme de Jan de Bont (SPEED e MINORITY REPORT) ainda é capaz de impressionar pelos bons efeitos especiais e pelo ritmo frenético da história. TWISTER é muito melhor, mas muito melhor, do que qualquer filme-desastre dos últimos tempos. Helen Hunt, apesar do histórico de atuações duras, consegue uma química com Bill Paxton (Bill, nos ombros do pai, viu o último discurso de Kennedy, em 22 de novembro de 1963) e não compromete. No elenco, Philip Seymour Hoffmann já mostrava seu talento, apesar de ter pouco espaço com seu personagem.  No mais, TWISTER é um ótimo filme de ação, bem realizado. It is impressive how Jan de Bont’s movie is still able to impress by its good special effects and by the frantic rhythm of the story. TWISTER is way way better than any disaster movie of today. Helen Hunt, despite her hard performance, has some rapport with Bill Paxton (Bill, on his father’s shoulders, saw Kennedy making his last speech on November 22 1963), and does not compromise. Philip Seymour Hoffmann already displayed his immense talent on a minor role. All and all, TWISTER is a great action movie. Telecine.



4452 - NA TERRA DE SANTOS E PECADORES (2024)

 


NA TERRA DE SANTOS E PECADORES (IN THE LAND OF SAINTS AND SINNERS, Irlanda, 2023) – Liam Neeson sempre nos lembra do que capaz quando, em vez de personagem de holograma, tem realmente algo realmente profundo nas mãos. Este é um filme melancólico, misturando a simplicidade de uma vila irlandesa com um perigoso grupo de ativistas do IRA. De certo modo, Liam vai se tornando um daqueles atores que redefinem seu próprio papel num filme – um homem experiente, de bom coração, carregando sua parcela de sofrimento, sempre tentando fazer a coisa certa. E isso acontece nessa história meio western, muito bem contada e igualmente dirigida. Além de Liam, outro ator se destaca: Ciarán Hinds. E ainda há espaço para Dostoievski aparecer como uma torre de esperança. Liam Neeson always reminds us of what he is capable of when he is finally given something other than a hologram character. This is a melancholic movie, blending the sow life of an Irish village with a dangerous group of IRA. In some sense, Liam is becoming one of those actors that reshapes the role to which he is designated – an experienced man, with a golden heart and his share of suffering, trying to do the right thing. That is what he does in the western-mood story, very well told and directed. Besides Liam, another actor is a highlight in the movie: Ciarán Hinds. There is also room for Dostoievski aparecer como uma torre de esperança. Prime.



4451 - INFESTAÇÃO (2024)

 


INFESTAÇÃO (INFESTED, França, USA, 2023) - Where "Infested" truly shines is in its ability to balance scares with surprising character development. We care about the residents trapped in the building, making us genuinely invested in their fight for survival. "Infested" is the perfect recipe for a frightfully good time. Just make sure you haven't eaten recently, and prepare to swat imaginary spiders out of the air long after the credits roll.



4450 - FÚRIA PRIMITIVA (2024)

 


FÚRIA PRIMITIVA (MONKEY MAN, USA, 2024) – Dev Patel tem uma estreia excepcional como director neste filme sobre a vingança de um homem que perdeu tudo na vida. A fotografia criativa realça a violência visceral do roteiro. A good revenge film that takes its time to develop the protagonist. Dev Patel gives a gut-wrenching portrait of man that lost everything. Enhanced by some creative photography, the violence is brutal and visceral. Taking its time, the film asks the audience to be patient for the hero to fully come into his "powers," but the payoff is well worth it. There is some "shaky cam," but not too much to ruin the experience. The spirituality, as well as the legends told in the movie, really add to the overall story, giving the film more substance than a lot of action films. 



4449 - IMACULADA (2024)


 IMACULADA (IMMACULATE, USA, 2024) - The film tries to be edgy and dark but doesn't quite hit the mark, almost playing it safe like a PG-13 movie so any comparisons to "Saint Maud" almost feel like an insult. It teases us with brutality but pulls its punches, leaving us with a sense of "been there, seen that" rather than genuine chills or thrills. Despite its beautiful setting and a premise that could have taken us on a deep, disturbing dive into faith and fear, "Immaculate" doesn't deliver. It ends up feeling like a collection of horror clichés without the bite, missing a chance to really stand out. For those looking for a horror movie that packs a punch, this might not be it.



4448 - ENTREVISTA COM O DEMÔNIO (2023)

 


ENTREVISTA COM O DEMÔNIO (LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL, USA, 2023) Early on and well into the ending, the movie explores the question of whether what is happening is real or fake. The ending had to have been consistent with the answer to that question. The problem that this movie has is that the ending--while not being the worst ending of all time for a movie--is not so great. It just doesn't tie the story together as well as I think it could have. Now, if this ending was done but a little differently, perhaps it could have still been good. Ultimately, I think if the ending to this movie was great or perfect, this could have been a true classic. But that was not the case. 

4447 - LA CHIMERA (2023)


LA CHIMERA (Itália, França, 2023) -  Este é um dos films mais bonitos dos últimos tempos. É uma agridoce versão do realism fantástico italiano extremamente bem dirigido por Alice Rohrwacher. Sua parábola sobre essa história de amor, entrelaçada com arqueologia, e primorosa. "La Chimera" is a bittersweet addition to the magical-Italian-realism cinematic universe of director Alice Rohrwacher. Her new parable about Italy that is also a folklore fairytale tells the story of clairvoyant/haunted archeologist/graverobber Arthur, played by Josh O'Connor. Arthur's journey to retrieve the film's buried namesake is not one for glory and it's barely for riches; O'Connor commits both emotionally and physically to a naturalistic portrait of a lost man searching for something that is beyond the tangible.




4446 - TWO AND A HALF MEN - TEMP 6 - 23 EPISÓDIOS (2006)


 TWO AND A HALF MEN – TEMPORADA 6 (USA, 2009) – Uma das sequências mais engraçadas desta temporada é quando Alan aparece com um boneco de ventriloquista, fazendo uma espécie de autoanálise da sua relação com Charlie. Chelsea (Jennifer Taylor) vai morar com Charlie, e isso causa um no seu ambiente doméstico. As cenas com Herb (Ryan Styles) são memoráveis desequilíbrio, especialmente quando ele começa a sentir as dificuldades na relação com Judith. One of the funniest scenes in this season is with Alan and his ventriloquist doll, during which he seems to analyze his relationship with Charlie. Chelsea (Jennifer Taylor) moves in and Charlie starts feeling uncomfortable with the situation. The scenes with Herb (Ryan Styles) are memorable, especially when he faces Judith’s idiosyncrasies.   



4445 - O LEITOR (2008)

 


O LEITOR (THE READER, USA, 2008) – O filme de Stephen Daldry (Do magnífico TÃO FORTE, TÃO PERTO) é uma bela história de amor, marcada pela tragédia da WW2 e um fio condutor irresistível: a paixão pelos livros. Há também Kate Winslet numa atuação comovente, junto com David Kross, Ralph Fiennes e Bruno Ganz. the story asks its audience what a true monster is. If you know a secret, one that could exonerate someone from being found guilty of murder, should you help her even though you know she's accepted her guilt despite being unable to stop it? What if that person was someone you loved? There is some heavy material thrown about in the second half of this film, emotions run high and people must make decisions concerning some very dire situations. 



4444 - SANGUE NO GELO (2013)

 


SANGUE DO GELO (THE FROZEN GROUND, USA, 2013) – Embora a história não seja muito original, este não é um típico filme sobre um serial killer. Sangue no Gelo consegue mostrar uma realidade violenta, sem muito sangue (apesar do título em português). De qualquer forma, é curioso ver John Cusack no papel do criminoso, e Nicolas Cage interpretando o homem médio, sem qualquer laivo de comportamento estranho.   Although the plot has been heavily misused in other films in the past and is not in itself very original, this is not your typical serial-killer movie. The Frozen Ground manages to be compelling without going over the top with too many gory details. The atmosphere it creates is authentic- it takes you back 30 years ago in Alaska when these gruesome events unfolded. Anyway, it is a little bit funny to see John Cusack on the role of the bad guy, and Nicolas Cage playing an average man without any kind of weird behavior.

4443 - 72 HORAS (2011)

 


72 HORAS (THE NEXT THREE DAYS, USA, 2011) - A remake of 2008 French film, “Pour Elle”, “The Next Three Days” sticks to the straightforward plot of the original, which is about a man who risks life and limb to reunite his child with that child’s mother, his wife. THE NEXT THREE DAYS is a methodical movie, as it shows John planning the jailbreak for his wife. There is suspense and jeopardy, as John encounters obstacles to his plans. Everything comes to a suspenseful climax when John puts his final plan into motion and the police begin a frantic manhunt for John and his family. THE NEXT THREE DAYS extol family and justice, but the protagonist has to break the law to save his family.



4442 - MISSÃO IMPOSSÍVEL - ACERTO DE CONTAS - PARTE 1 (USA, 2023)


MISSÃO IMPOSSÍVEL – ACERTO DE CONTAS – PARTE 1 (USA, 2023) – A franquia MI já teve muitos pontos altos, principalmente pelos esforços de Tom Cruise para fazer uma série memorável. Contudo, esta edição não está à altura dos anteriores. Apesar da ação frenética, não há química entre os personagens, muitos completamente sem carisma. Haley Atwell tem um papel meio forçado, inserindo um humor deslocado na trama – veja a cena em que ela e Cruise num minúsculo carro italiano. Outra coisa: será mesmo uma missão impossível encontrar uma mera chave? O filme começa promissor, mas termina dando a impressão de que perdemos duas horas e meia. The MI franchise has had many highlights, mainly because Tom Cruise’s efforts to make his movies unforgettable. However, this edition is not up to the previous movies’ prestige. Despite the frantic action, the movie lacks chemistry among the characters, many of them deprived of their old charisma. Some new faces just do not make the story work: Haley Atwell’s character is a bit out of place, because inserts some kind of silly humor where it should be present (just check the scene with her and Cruise in a tiny Italian car). One thing bugs me: if the MI team is always prone to accomplishing missions that are actually hard, why does it seem to be one these missions just find a mere key? The movie started out promising but by the end, it just feels like being robbed of two and a half hours. 



4441 - HARRY POTTER E A PEDRA FILOSOFAL (2001)


 HARRY POTTER E A PEDRA FILOSOFAL (HARRY POTTER AND THE SOCERER’S STONE, USA, 2001) - In the film we see Harry Potter coming to terms with his messianic purpose: he is released from his Dickensian incarceration in the Dursley household and sent for his first term at Hogwarts with its public-school/Oxbridge traditions. Harry learns how to play quidditch (like Tom Brown learning rugby) and he and his three pals are sorted into their various houses; they encounter the formidable teaching staff, including Professor McGonagall (Maggie Smith), Professor Quirrell (Ian Hart) and Professor Snape (Alan Rickman) and then meet the challenge of a deadly assault on Harry. HBO Max. 



4440 - GODZILLA MINUS ONE (2024)

 


GODZILLA MINUS ONE (GOJIRA -1.0, JAPAN, 2023)  Este filme está bem acima de outras produções do gênero sobre o lagartão zangado. No limite entre a catástrofe e o sublime, GMO é um belo produto cinematográfico, resgatando a gravidade do filme original de 1954. Há algo de fascinante no monstro destruindo uma megalópole como uma força da natureza. O “minus one” se refere ao fato de que o Japão havia sido devastado pela WW2 (reduzido a zero), mas, com o aparecimento de Godzilla, foi reduzido a menos zero. This movie is a significant cut above the other productions about the big angry lizard. On the cusp between catastrophe and the sublime, GMO is a well-crafted piece of cinema, rescuing the same gravitas of the original 1954 Godzilla. There is something fascinating about the monster destroying a big city as a force of nature. The "Minus One" refers to the fact that Japan had already been devastated by WWII (brought down to zero), but with the emergence of Godzilla, it puts Japan into the negative. This is reflected in the film's original Japanese tagline, which translates to, "Postwar Japan. From Zero to Minus".



4439 - BELEZA AMERICANA (1999)


   BELEZA AMERICANA (AMERICAN BEAUTY, USA, 1999) – O filme de Sam Mendes continua a ser uma obra impactante, mostrando um recorte da vida americana, dentro dos padrões capitalistas e morais de uma sociedade já decadente desde esta época. O roteiro explora referências a LOLITA, na relação do personagem de Kevin Spacey e Mena Suvari, e faz uma crítica direta à hipocrisia dos valores militares, com o personagem do grande Chris Cooper. Atenção para o chamado à poesia do cotidiano revelada por Ricky (Wes Bentley). Sam Mendes’ movie is still a striking work, showing a slice of the American way of life, according to the capitalist and moral patterns of a already decadent society. The script explores references to LOLITA, in Kevin Spacey and Mena Suvari’s relationship, and criticizes the hypocrisy of military values, with Chris Cooper’s character. Attention to daily poetry revealed by Ricky (Wes Bentley).

4438 - VOZES DA SEGUNDA GUERRA - 6 EPISÓDIOS (2023)

 


VOZES DA SEGUNDA GUERRA (WORLD WAR II FROM THE FRONTLINES, USA, 2023) - The use of colorization adds a new layer of depth and immediacy to the footage, making it feel more relatable and relevant to modern audiences. It allows us to see the vibrant landscapes, vivid uniforms, and blood-soaked battlefields in a way that black-and-white footage simply cannot convey. This technique helps bridge the gap between past and present, reminding us that these were real people who lived through unimaginable hardships. The documentary effectively combines original footage with interviews from veterans who provide firsthand accounts of their experiences. Their stories are powerful and moving, offering insights into the physical challenges they faced and the emotional toll war took on them. The juxtaposition of colorful visuals with these personal narratives creates a compelling narrative thread throughout the film.



4437 - RIPLEY - 8 EPISÓDIOS (2024)


 RIPLEY – 8 EPISÓDIOS (USA, 2024) – Cada um dos 8 episódios de RIPLEY é uma obra-prima, seja por causa da fotografia P&B inebriante, seja pela atuação majestosa do elenco, a começar pelo excelente Andrew Scott e o espetacular time de atores italianos, depois que a trama se transfere para a Europa. Atenção para Maurizio Lombardi, o inspetor Ravini, encarregado de investigar a morte de Richard Greenleaf (Johnny Flynn): ele deveria ganhar um Oscar por toda cena na qual está. Dakota Fanning, interpretando Marge, numa chave bem intimista, é outro destaque. É uma produção magnifica, entrelaçando a história de Caravaggio com a de Tom Ripley, sempre trabalhando com a sugestão, a ambiguidade dos personagens e a chave minimalista. Each of the eight episodes of RIPLEY is a masterpiece, be it for the inebriating B&W photography, be it for the outstanding performance of the cast, including the great Andrew Scott and the spectacular team of Italian actors, after the plot is taken to Europe. Attention to Maurizio Lombardi (inspector Ravini), in charge of the investigation about Richard Greenleaf’s murder: he would deserve a Oscar for every scene he is in. Dakota Fanning, playing Marge in a intimist key, is another highlight. It is a magnificent work, intertwining Caravaggio’s story with Tom Ripley’s, always working much more with suggestion than the obvious, the characters’ ambiguity and a minimalist key.  Netflix.

4436 - TWO AND A HALF MEN - TEMP 1 - 23 EPISÓDIOS (2004)


TWO AND A HALF MEN – TEMP 1 – 23 EPISÓDIOS (USA, 2004) – Esta primeira temporada, como sempre acontece, os personagens ainda não estão definidos e o roteiro claramente procura o tom certo. Jake é mostrado como um garoto esperto – sua inteligência parece desaparecer ao longo das outras temporadas, e Berta ainda não mostra todo seu potencial nos comentários ácidos. Aliás, Berta não era, originalmente, um personagem regular, coisa que só aconteceu a partir da segunda temporada. This first season, as it always happens, characters ae not defined and the script still clearly trying the right tone. Jake is quite a smart boy – his intelligence seems to wear off along the subsequent seasons, and Berta is only a glimpse of her acid comments. Berta wasn't originally supposed to be a recurring character, but Conchata Ferrel proved to be such a hit with the audience that she became a regular cast member at the start of season two.



4435 - O ZOOLÓGICO DE VARSÓVIA (2017)


O ZOOLÓGICO DE VARSÓVIA (THE ZOOKEEPER’S WIFE, USA, UK, 2017) – O filme é uma mistura de A LISTA DE SCHINDLER e PROPOSTA INDECENTE, com um ponto alto: a atuação de Jessica Chastain e Daniel Brühl. O casal Antonina e Jan é dono do zoológico na capital da Polônia, quando começa a WW2, com a invasão do país pelos nazistas. O zoológico tem, para os alemães, um objetivo científico: a recriação do auroque, uma espécie bovina extinta. Antonina (Chastain) e seu marido, então, apesar das possíveis consequências, se recusa a aceitar a ameaça nazista, facilitam a fuga de 300 judeus bem debaixo do nariz dos alemães. No fundo, esta é uma celebração os heróis comuns em tempos extraordinários. The movie is a blend of SCHINDLER’S LIST and INDECENT PROPOSAL, with a highlight: Jessica Chastain and Daniel Brühl’s performance. The couple Antonina and Jan owns the zoo in the capital of Poland, when WW2 breaks with the Nazi invasion. The zoo has a scientific goal for the Germans: the recreation of an extinguished kind of bison. Antonina (Chastain) and her husband, then, regardless of the consequences, refused to wither before the Nazi menace, and sheltered three hundred Jewish men, women, and children right under the noses of the enemy. At his heart, this is a celebration of ordinary heroes in extraordinary times.




4434 - VIÚVA NEGRA (2022)

 


VIÚVA NEGRA (BLACK WIDOW, USA, 2022) – Scarlett Johansson é obrigatória. Dito isso, e curioso assistir de novo a esse filme e notar, dessa vez, que David Habour, ao lado de Pedro Pascal, fica perfeito representando a figura paterna – lembre-se de Hopper, em STRANGER THINGS. Aqui, ele é o pai substituto de Scarlett e Florence Pugh e também o alívio cômico da história dramática das irmãs, num filme cujo roteiro é vai além dos CGIs típicos da franquia dos Vingadores. Scarlett Johansson is mandatory. That said, it is curious to watch again this movie and notice that David Habour, along with Pedro Pascal, is perfect on the role of a father figure – check Hopper in STRANGER THINGS. O ALFAIATE (THE OUTFIT, USA, 2022) – Para começar, Mark Rylance é obrigatório. Sua atuação é sempre perfeita. Neste filme, passado quase totalmente na alfaiataria da qual seu personagem é proprietário, o roteiro gira em torno de gangsteres e algumas situações irreais que comprometem o terço final da história. Destaque também para Zoey Dutch, filha de Lea Thompson. This was a good movie for the first 90 minutes. Mark Rylance is a fine character actor who excels in this role. The rest of the ensemble cast was also good, but this is Rylance's movie. The cinematography in the confines of a tailor shop is also top-notch. Unfortunately, the last 15 minutes of the screenplay take unbelievable twists that make for a comic-book ending. Zoey Dutch is one of the highlights. Prime.

A MEXICANA (THE MEXICAN, USA, 2001) - The Mexican" is not really a romantic comedy like many audiences will expect; it is a somewhat coarse, violent adventure with undertones dealing with forgiveness and the strength of love. Actually, the relationship between the characters of Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts is quite trite. Except for the third act, whenever on screen together, the two characters do nothing but bitterly argue and fight. The performances keep the romance alive; clearly Pitt and Roberts are the right choices for the parts. Brad Pitt progresses into a somewhat comedic role, and he often struggles with it. But I certainly thought his performance was funny. He gives his character the perfect amount of charm and sweetness. Julia Roberts is a little annoying but puts an effective edge in her character. But James Gandolfini is there, and this fact moves the story to another level.



4431 - GUERRA NO PLANETA DOS MACACOS

 


PLANETA DOS MACACOS, A GUERRA (WAR OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, USA, 2017) The film’s real technological achievement isn’t the rendering of CGI forests (though these are pretty good) but the motion-capture apes themselves, huge liquid eyes (“My God! Almost human!” the Colonel shudders) and facial expressions as thrillingly elastic and legible as the human actors who play them. All science fiction is philosophy; here, Reeves asks what distinguishes humans from animals. The twist is that as the apes get “smarter” (and the humans become crueler), they also grow softer, in a reminder that humanity resides in both the head and the heart. Part of the film’s potency derives from the figure of Caesar, the ape leader whose presence is created in motion-capture by Andy Serkis. His face is in fact quite unlike Serkis’s, but this figure has real presence and personality: a grizzled old soldier, whose mouth is always turned into a severe scowl of authority. It’s an engrossing, forthright adventure.

PLANETA DOS MACACOS, O CONFRONTO (DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, USA, 2014) - The film takes place at least 8 years after 'Rise' and the time jump is much to their benefit. It allowed Caesar to step into his role as leader of all the apes and link between the apes and humans. Speaking of the effects, some of the apes' facial expressions were just devastating. And for me to say that I was on the verge of tears in a movie where apes can talk should sound absurd but its the truth. Caesar's family is present throughout and his eldest son is the one that hit home. When you see him being put into war unwillingly after life changing events you just can’t but help feeling terrible for him. Koba, the corrupt ape who has always believed humans are more dangerous than Caesar thinks, is also a conflicting character. Disney Plus.

PLANETA DOS MACACOS, A ORIGEM (RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, USA, 2011) – Like the birds, the apes can be pretty scary when they get organized. That's what these opposable-thumb-possessors have got their hearts set on in this prequel to the 1968 Charlton Heston classic Planet of the Apes and its successors. It's a smart and highly entertaining popcorn thriller from British-born director Rupert Wyatt, cheerfully satirical in the tradition of this movie series, yet unpretentious at the same time. Somehow the scratching, screeching chirpiness keeps it down to earth. The simian star of this one is Caesar, whose movements and characterization are provided through motion-capture technology by Andy Serkis, who similarly played the gorilla in Peter Jackson's 2005 remake of King Kong. Disney Plus.
