LOBISOMEN (THE WOLF MAN, USA, 1941) – Último dos monstros da
Universal, na sua época áurea, a ter seu filme, O LOBISOMEN também representou
a grande chance profissional de Lon Chaney Jr., que defendeu seu personagem-grife
com unhas e dentes, neste e nas inevitáveis sequências. O elenco é notável, a
começar por Claude Rains (embora não convença como pai de Chaney), Bela Lugosi
e Raph Bellamy. O roteiro de Curt Siodmak enfatiza a tragédia grega da história
de Larry Talbot (Chaney), cuja licantropia o leva a questionar sua existência
no cotejo com a “normalidade” circundante. O cenário e a trilha sonora, de Paul
Sawtell, seriam, mais tarde, usados na série Sherlock Holmes, com Basil Rathbone
e Nigel Bruce. The last Universal
monster to have his own movie, THE WOLF MAN also represents Lon Chaney Jr.’s
great professional chance. He grabbed his character with nails and teeth in
this movie and in the inevitable sequences. The cast is top-notch: Claude Rains
(though he does not convince as Chaney’s father), Bela Lugosi and Ralph Bellamy.
Curt Siodmak's writing emphasizes the Greek tragedy of Larry Talbot’s story,
whose lycanthropy leads him to question his own existence in comparison with the
surrounding “normality”. The scenario and the score, by Paul Sawtell, would be
later used in the Sherlock Holmes’ series with Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.
