the role of the tramp he had created in 1914. The movie shows the American
society still under the effects of the Great Depression: poverty, unemployment,
strikes, political intolerance, social inequality, the threat of mechanization
and the ghost of the drugs. Focusing on these questions from the comedy point of
view, Chaplin points out the difficulties of survival in a wildly capitalist world.
