3830 - GODZILLA VS KONG (2021)

  GODZILLA VS KONG (USA, 2020) – Qual o sentido de colocar Godzilla lutando contra King Kong? Qual o sentido de ter um bom elenco desperdiçado numa história constrangedora de tão ruim, em que falta a arte do roteiro das histórias de kaiju? Da minha parte, havia a esperança de sentir a emoção específica dos filmes de monstros (KING KONG, de 1933; o primeiro GODZILLA, de 1954; A 20 MILHÕES DE MILHAS DA TERRA, de 1957), mas não rolou. Apesar da melhora dos CGIs em relação aos filmes anteriores, foi triste ver as ótimas Millie Bobby Brown e Rebecca Hall em papéis tão pouco inspiradores. What is the point of this movie? What is the point of a good cast wasted in an embarrassing story, completely devoid of the art of kaiju stories? On my part, there was the hope for the specific primal emotion of the monster movies (KING KONG, 1933; the first GODZILLA, 1954; 20 MILLION MILES FROM EARTH, 1957), but nothing happened. Despite the improvement of the CGIs, it was sad to watch the great Millie Bobby Brown and Rebecca Hall in such uninspiring roles. HBO.

3829 - EM CARNE VIVA (2003)

   EM CARNE VIVA (IN THE CUT, USA, 2003) – Meg Ryan se libertou da imagem de namoradinha da América no papel de uma professora apaixonada por um detetive (Mark Ruffalo). O clima sombrio do filme é reforçado com um roteiro seco, mas previsível. Houve muita crítica negativa, mas o filme não é pior do que muitos dos gêneros. The movie is a subtle little study character that is more about observing behavior than it is about searching for a killer. It is not an intensely plotted thriller may not be as intrigued by this film as those searching for a psychosexual character study. It's the atmosphere and the performances that count in this film. There have been many negative reviews, but the movie is not worse that many of the genre.

3828 - O REGRESSO (2015)

        O REGRESSO (THE REVENANT, USA, 2015) – Leonardo de Caprio ganhou o Oscar de Melhor Ator por essa impressionante atuação no filme de Alejandro G. Iñarritu (BIRDMAN, 2014), ganhador também de Melhor Diretor. O filme é um primor de fotografia, narrativa e visceralidade, além de trazer Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) e Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy), ambos de PEAKY BLINDERS. Um dos filmes mais impressionantes de todos os tempos. Leonardo Di Caprio won the Best Actor Oscar for this stunning performance in Alejandro G. Iñarritu’s movie, who also won the Best Achievement in Directing. The movie is a lesson on photography, narrative and emotion, also presenting Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) and Alfie Solomons (Tom Hardy), both from PEAKY BLINDERS. One of the most impressive movies ever. Prime     

 

 

3827 - A INVOCAÇÃO DO MAL - A ORDEM DO DEMÔNIO (2021)

       A INVOCAÇÃO DO MAL 3 – A ORDEM DO DEMÔNIO (THE CONJURING – THE DEVIL MADE ME DO IT, USA, 2021) –De fato, esse é o mais fraco da trilogia. James Wan deveria ter sido mantido na direção. As atuações sólidas de Patrick Wilson e Vera Farmiga não foram suficientes para manter a proposta dos filmes anteriores. Indeed, this is the least scariest of the whole conjuring universe. James Wan should have been kept as a director. Solid turns by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as they have always done but still even they couldn't elevate this one. There is zero character development and by the end you won't even care that you don't understand what is going on. The special effects are laughable, as is the dialog and whatever the plot is. Plot holes, plot holes everywhere. James Wan, you were sorely missed! Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga deserved better.  

 

3826 - INTO THE STORM (2014)

       INTO THE STORM (USA, 2014) – Nem de longe comparável ao importante TWISTER, esse filme é ruim do início ao fim. Atores (?) inexpressivos, roteiro fraco e CGIs pouco inspirados. Nada funciona. Até porque, para o resto do mundo, caçar tornados é algo que requer um esforço enorme para aceitar. Em TWISTER, apesar da atuação dura de Helen Hunt, havia dois atores marcantes: Bill Paxton e Philip Seymour Hoffmann. Beyond comparison to the important TWISTER, this movie is completely lousy. Actors (?) with no expression, weak script and uninspired CGIs. Nothing works. Let face it: for the rest of the world, tornado hunting is something not easily understood. In TWISTER, depiste the stone-faced performance of Helen Hunt, there were two remarkable actors: Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffmann. 

 

3825 - TONY MANERO (2009)

TONY MANERO (Chile, 2009) – O filme mostra uma parcela da população chilena, nos anos 70, durante a ditadura de Augusto Pinochet – o foco está num desajustado, cujo sonho maior é viver o personagem de John Travolta, num show de calouros da TV. A partir daí, o roteiro questiona as condições humilhantes e desesperadas nas quais os chilenos ficaram, num período de excessão e dura repressão militar do sanguinário Pinochet. Há alguma coisa de dignidade e brutalidade patética no personagem central que pode não ser de fácil entendimento para a maioria do público. Netflix. The movie shows part of the Chilean population, in the 70s, during Pinochet’s dicatorship. The focus is on a misfit whose greatest dream is to impersonate John Travolta’s famous character in a TV show. From this point on, the script questions the humilliating and desperate conditions of the Chileans tanks to bloody Pinochet. There is some kind of dignity and pathetic brutality in the main character that may not be easily understood by the general audience. Netflix. 

3824 - QUICKSAND (1950)

Barbara Bates

        QUICKSAND (USA, 1950) – Noir com um ator inesperado – Mickey Rooney - , e outro que é a cara do gênero – Peter Lorre. Rooney, supreendentemente, está ótimo no papel de um mecânico apaixonado por, claro, uma loura fatal, Jeanne Cagney (irmã de James). Contudo, minha curiosidade, neste filme, é Barbara Bates, uma das atrizes mais belas dessa época. A vida de Barbara foi dramática: ela lutava contra a depressão e as pressões imanentes ao showbiz de Hollywood. Cometeu suicídio em 1968. Noir with na unexpected actor – Mickey Rooney -, and another who is the face of the gender – Peter Lorre. Rooney, surprinsingly, is great on the role of a mechanic in love with a femme fatale, Jeanne Cagney (James’s sister). However, what makes me curious in this movie is the presence of Barbara Bates, one of the most beautiful of the time. Barbara’s life was dramatic: emotionally unable to withstand the pressures of Hollywood and depression, she committed suicide in 1968.   

     

3823 - ED ASNER (1929 - 2021)

      ED ASNER (1929 – 2021) – Dois personagens marcaram a vida de Ed Asner: o adorável rabugento Lou Grant, em MARY TYLER MOORE e Carl Fredrickson, no devastador UP, ALTAS AVENTURAS, que me roubou uma quantidade inimaginável de lágrimas. Lou Grant era a alma de Ed Asner – seu mal humor se diluía num oceano de docilidade do personagem, ao mesmo tempo rígido e protetor com seus subordinados da WJM-TV. Lou era, de certa forma, a figura paterna sonhada por todos nós, fãs do programa. Era terno, engraçado, sábio. His career was hallmarked by two characters: the lovely gruff Lou Grant in MARY TYLER MOORE and Carl Fredrickson in the devastating UP, which stole a great amount of tears from my heart. Lou Grant is Ed Asner’s soul – his gruffness was attenuated in his character’s sea of docility, at the same time rigid as well as protective boss at WJM-TV newsroom. He was, somewhat, the father figure we all dreamed of: tender, funny, wise.   

 

3822 - TENET (2020)

Elizabeth Debicki, uma torre...

       TENET (USA, 2020) – Chris Nolan é conhecido por ir ao extremo nos seus filmes, nos levando a uma completa suspensão de descrença. Aqui, como sempre, a linguagem visual é espetacular, chegando a níveis extravagantes. Robert Pattinson está impecável, mas não se pode dizer o mesmo da atuação monolítica de John David Washington. Elizabeth Debick, uma torre de beleza, é o ponto alto do filme. It is widely known that Nolan swings for the fences of what's possible and pushes the realms of normality. This film for whatever reason just doesn't mesh together the way most of his films do even with complex suspension of disbelief aspects. It's often scattered and juxtaposed to a near outrageous level. The visuals are spectacular at times but also seem way too extravagant to take seriously other times. Robert Pattinson is flawless and probably the standout of the film with his vigorous performance. The same cannot be said about John David Washington's barren and emotionless lack of effort. Elizabeth Debick, a tower of beauty, is the highest point of the movie.

 

3821 - A VIDA EM SI (2018)

    A VIDA EM SI (LIFE ITSELF, USA, 2018) - O relacionamento amoroso vivido por um casal (Oscar Isaac e Olivia Wilde), é contado através de diferentes décadas e continentes, desde as ruas de Nova York até Espanha e de como diferentes pessoas acabam se conectando a ela através de um evento marcante. E, claro, Oliva Wilde é o máximo que uma mulher pode se aproximar da perfeição. Life Itself is a generation-spanning story about love and loss that begins by following Will (Oscar Isaac) a screenwriter spiraling after his pregnant wife, Abby (Olivia Wilde), leaves him. His struggles affect his daughter Dylan (Olivia Cooke), who grows into a troubled young woman in New York City. Her life intertwines with that of Rodrigo (Alex Monner), a traumatized young man who grew up on an olive plantation in Spain. The decisions made by their ancestor’s ripple through the decades to bring them together. Moreover, Olivia Wilde is the closest any woman can get to perfection. 

 

3820 - PEAKY BLINDERS - TEMPORADA 2 (2014)

1. PEAKY BLINDERS – TEMPORADA 2 - Once again Peaky Blinders does a great job bringing the 1920s to life. With the added inclusion of London, there’s an extra emphasis on bringing the capital to life along with Birmingham’s grimy, poor districts. From a glitzy, prestigious club that erupts into a brawl or the various establishing shots of London itself, Peaky Blinders continues to impress with its set and production design. Seeing Thomas try to navigate the murky criminal underworld with foes on all side is something this second season does incredibly well. While there are inevitable lulls in the overall narrative, for the most part Peaky Blinders does an excellent job improving on the first season, once again delivering a satisfying slice of crime drama.
