3730 - O LADO BOM DA VIDA (2012)

1.       O LADO BOM DA VIDA (SILVER LINNINGS PLAYBOOK, USA, 2012) – Este filme tem posição de destaque na minha lista de favoritos. Há um motivo principal: Jennifer Lawrence. É ela que, junto com Bradley Cooper, dá alma ao filme. Claro, Robert De Niro faz a sua parte, mas é o torvelinho de emoções aproximando Pat e Tiffany, a grande atração da história. E há um amor que difícil de esquecer (quem não?) e livros essenciais. Imperdível, como Jennifer Lawrence. This movie is one of my favorites. There is a reason for that: Jennifer Lawrence. That is her who, along Bradley Cooper, is the soul of the movie. Of course, Robert de Niro is good as always, but it the whirlpool of emotions bringing Pat and Tiffany together the great attraction of the movie. Besides, there is an unforgotten love (who has never got one?) and essential books. Unmissable, as Jennifer Lawrence.  

 

3729 - GIGANTE (2009)

1.      GIGANTE (GIANT, Uruguai, 2009) – Mais um belo exemplo do cinema sul-americano (o Brasil não entra nesta lista). Agora é o Uruguai que faz bonito: o diretor Adrian Biniez nos traz um sensível retrato da solidão encapsulada num processo obsessivo para lá de romântico. Jara (Horacio Camandule) é um guarda-noturno de um supermercado e, através das câmeras de monitoração interna, se apaixona por uma das encarregadas da limpeza, Julia (Leonor Svarcas). A partir daí, o lento tempo da paixão se instala, até a cena final, quando tudo parece ter sua razão de ser. Imperdível. Another nice edition of the Sout-American cinema (excluding Brazil). Now it is Uruguay’s turn: director Adrian Biniez bring us a sensituive portrait of loneliness encapsulated in a romantic and obsessive process. Jara (Horacio Camandule) is a security guard in a supermarket and monitoring the store via surveillance cameras falls in love for a janitor named Julia (Leonor Svarcas). From this point on, the slow rythym of passion is established, until the final scene when everything falls into place.   

 

3728 - ROXANNE (1987)

 ROXANNE (USA, 1987) – Clássico dos anos 80 e, talvez, um dos melhores filmes de Steve Martin, baseado em “Cyrano de Bergerac”. Martin, no seu auge artístico, é a força criativa da história, entregando uma atuação moderadamente histriônica junto com uma adaptação equilibrada da obra de Edmond Rostand. Daryl Hannah não foi a melhor escolha para o papel de Roxanne, mas acaba, gradualmente, se harmonizando com o roteiro. Classic of the 80s and probably one of the best Steve Martin’s movies, based on “Cyrano de Bergerac”. Martin, in his artistc peak is the driving creative force behind the film, delivering a histrionic performance and a balanced adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s work. Daryl Hannah might not be the best choice for the role of Roxanne, but gradually connects to the story.    

    

3727 - HOMEM-ARANHA 3 (2007)

1.       HOMEM-ARANHA 3 (SPIDER-MAN 3, USA, 2007) – A última parte da trilogia de Sam Raimi não é tão boa quanto os filmes anteriores (sendo o segundo levemente superior). O roteiro derrapa feio do meio para o fim, e as pontas soltas dão a impressão de uma finalização apressada. Há, também, uma notável queda na qualidade dos CGIs. Por outro lado, Toby Maguire contina a dar a tragicidade exata a Peter Parker, obedecendo ao arco dramático começado no primeiro filme. Minha crítica anterior permanece: Elizabeth Banks desperdiçada – ao contrário da fraquíssima Kirsten Dunst, ela teria feito da Mary Jane Watson um personagem muito mais memorável e esteticamente incomparável. Os dois vilões poderiam ter sido mais desenvolvidos: Thomas Hayden Church (que tem uma cena sensacional num episódio de CHEERS) é sempre uma presença marcante, mas seu Sandman é um personagem sem substância, James Franco recupera sem muita convicção o Duende Verde herdado do seu pai, Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe), e o Venon de Topher Grace é uma piada. The last edition of Sam Raimi’s trilogy is not so good as the previous movies (being the second slightly superior). The script fails from the middle to the end, and the loose ends give the impression of a rush closing. There is also a remarkable fall in the CGIs quality. On the other hand, Toby Maguire keeps on giving the exact pathos to Peter Parker, according to the dramatic arch established in the first movie. My previous criticism is still valid: Elizabeth Banks is not properly casted – she would be much more memorable as an actress and aesthetically uncomparable than the weak Kirsten Dunst. The two villains could have been more developed: Thomas Hayden Church (who has a great scene in CHEERS) is always a strong presence, but his Sandman is a character with no substance, James Franco tries to recover his father’s Green Goblin, and Topher Grace’s Venon is just a joke.   

   

3726 - HOMEM-ARANHA 2 (2004)

HOMEM-ARANHA 2 (SPIDERMAN 2, 2004) Eu tinha me esquecido de como esse filme é tão bom quanto o primeiro. Os CGIs são excelentes, Alfred Molina está convincente como o arquivilão Dr. Octopuss, J. K. Simmons é o J. J. Jameson perfeito (igual ao desenho dos anos 60), Rosemary Harris nasceu para ser a tia May e, claro, Tobey Maguire é a melhor versão de Peter Parker. Sua atuação traduz fielmente as características do nerd perdido entre os apelos humanos e o fascínio com os superpoderes adquiros no primeiro filme. O problema continua Kirsten Dunst, uma atriz sem o brilho necessário para o papel de MJ Watson. Isso se torna especialmente frustrante quando a bela e talentosa Elizabeth Banks está no elenco, num papel pequeno, como secretária de Jameson. I have forgotten hpw this movie is as good as the previous one. The CGIs are amazing, Alfred Molina is convincing as Dr. Octopuss, J.K. Simmons is the perfect J.J. Jameson (like the original cartoon of the 60s), Rosemary Harris is born to be aunt May and, of course, Tobey Maguire is the best version of Peter Parker ever. His performance conveys the lost nerd’s characteristics between the human appeals and the fascination with the superpowers acquired in the first movie. The problem is still Kirsten Dunst, an actress who lacks the necessary skills to play the role of MJ Watson. This is particularly frustrating when the beautiful and talented Elizabeth Banks is in the cast in a small role as Jameson’s secretary.   

 

3725 - ALTA TENSÃO (1990)

 ALTA TENSÃO (BIRD ON A WIRE, USA, 1990) – Com o modo “Martin Riggs” ligado o tempo todo, Mel Gibson foge com Goldie Hawn num road movie com um humor ao estilo de Frank Capra e ação misturada numa comédia romântica meio amalucada. Funcionou na época, mas o filme ficou datado. With Martin Riggs’ mode on, Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn are running all the time in this Frank Capra-esque action-packed screwed romantic comedy-chase thriller. It worked at that time, but the whole thing is definitely dated. Netflix.   

 

3724 - EU ME IMPORTO (2020)

O grande Peter Dinklage e Rosamund Pike

 EU ME IMPORTO (I CARE A LOT, USA, 2020) – Muito bem dirigido por J. Blakeson e com um roteiro supimpa – mesmo que, na minha opinião, ele tenha posto tudo a perder nas últimas cenas – ICL é um filme em que o talento de Rosamund Pike explode em todas as direções. Ambiciosa, determinada, arrogante, trapaceira, e elegante em todos esses aspectos, ela é uma tutora de pessoas idosas e especializada em roubá-las dentro dos mais estritos limites da lei. Elenco fantástico: Diane Wiest (pouco aproveitada), Peter Dinklage (um gigante em cena) e Isaih Whitlock Jr. (como o juiz mais frouxo da face da Terra). O interessante é que nenhum personagem realmente presta, por isso, temos total liberdade de gostar de qualquer um deles. Very well directed and displaying a wonderful script – even though, in my opinion, he missed the point in the last scenes – ICL is a movie that Rosamund Pike explodes in all directions. Poised with sharklike self-assurance, arrogante, ambitious, crooked – but elegant in all those aspects - she is a professional, court-appointed guardian for dozens of elderly wards whose assets she seizes and cunningly bilks through dubious but legal means. Fantastic cast: Diane Wiest (a little bit wasted), Peter Dinklage (a giant in scene) and Isaih Whitlock Jr. (as the softest judge ever). The interesting is that no character is likeable, thus, we are free to relate to any one of them. Netflix.  

 

3723 - PASSAGEIROS (2016)

Jennifer Lawrence e Chris Pratt

PASSAGEIROS (PASSENGERS, USA, 2016) – Esse é um dos meus filmes favoritos. Por várias razões: é ficção científica, a história se passa num espaçonave gigante, é sobre a solidão cósmica que se abate sobre nós em tantos momentos, há um robô confidente e simpático. E, claro, Jennifer Lawrence de salto alto. Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) acorda bem antes da hora prevista para chegar a Homestead II. De ínicio, em função da irremediabilidade de sua situação, resolve enfrentar o fato de estar sozinho no meio do universo. O único amigo, Arthur, um bartender robô, sempre disposto a ouvi-lo e com certa dificuldade de guardar segredos. Mas não é o suficiente. O filme é uma alegoria do que é a vida no aqui e agora e uma homenagem a quem gosta de escrever. Perfeito. This is one of my favorite movies. For several reasons: it is a sci-fi flick, ths story takes place in a huge spaceship, it is about the cosmic loneliness that invariably hits us, there is a confident and nice robot. And, of course, Jennifer Lawrence in high heels. Jim Preston (Chris Pratt) wakes up far before the scheduled time to arrive at Homestead II. At first, due to the irreversibility of his situation, he decides to face the fact that he is alone in the middle of the universe. His only friend, Arthur, is a robot bartender, always willing to listen and incapable to keep secrets. But it is not enough. The movie is an alegory of life in the here and now and a homage to those who like to write. Perfect. 

 

3722 - A ESCAVAÇÃO (2020)

O grande Ralph Fiennes e Carey Mulligan

  A ESCAVAÇÃO (THE DIG, UK, 2021) -  O elenco é ótimo, especialmente Lily James e Ralph Fiennes. A história vai muito além de uma simples escavação arqueológica – é também sobre como lembranças e sonhos acontecem dentro de nós. Ainda há laivos de relacionamentos intensos entre os personagens, e Ralph Fiennes é sempre um ator que nos emociona em qualquer cena. O pano de fundo da iminência da WW2 faz tudo ainda mais dramático. The cast is outstanding and all put in great performances, especially Lily James and Ralph Fiennes. It's not just about an archaeological dig though, it's about how memories and hopes are cultivated inside us. There are also several strands to the relationships between the characters, including working relationships, family relationships, class and secret relationships. Moreover, Ralph Fiennes is always obligatory – he is an actor that moves us inside just being on any scene. All this set with a backdrop of the coming second world war, which makes everything more dramatic.

 

3721 - O FOTÓGRAFO DE MAUTHAUSEN (2018)

Mario Casas e Richard van Weyden

.       O FOTÓGRAFO DE MAUTHAUSEN (EL FOTÓGRAFO DE MAUTHAUSEN, Espanha, 2018) – Um prisioneiro espanhol do campo de concentração de Mauthausen, na Áustria, Francesc Boix (Mario Casas, do sensacional UM CONTRATEMPO, também na Netflix) tenta salvas os negativos que provam os horrores acontecidos durante a guerra. Excelente, em todos os sentidos, e uma bela homenagem à fotografia e à resistência à barbárie. Based on real events, Francesc Boix (Mario Casas, from the outstanding UM CONTRATEMPO, also on Netflix) is a Spaniard inmate in the Nazi concentration camp of Mauthausen in Austria who tries to save the evidences of the horrors committed inside its walls. A great film, in all senses, and a fair homage to photography and to the resistance to the barbaric times of WWII.  

 

3720 - UM MÉTODO PERIGOSO (2011)

Viggo, Keira e Michael

1.      UM MÉTODO PERIGOSO (A DANGEROUS METHOD, Inglaterra, Alemanha, Suíça, 2011) – O filme de David Cronenberg coloca a relação de Jung e Freud em rota de colisão: o primeiro, aos poucos, vai se afastando da posição ortodoxa do segundo em relação à prevalência da libido nas ações humanas, e um abismo se abre entre os dois maiores nomes da psicanálise no início do século. Keira Knightley, numa atuação corajosa, é a russa judia Sabina Spielrein, paciente de Jung e com quem ele se envolve durante o tratamento. O filme tem muito a ver com a biografia de Freud, que li este mês – essa leitura deu um novo entendimento ao filme agora. David Cronenberg’s movie puts Jung and Freud’s relationship in a collision route: the first, gradually, grows apart from the orthodox position about the importance of the libido appointed by the latter, and an abyss that takes place between the most prominent names of psychoanalysis in the beginning of the century. Keira Knightley has a courageous performance as the Russian Jew Sabina Spielrein, Jung’s patient with whom he had an affair during the treatment. The movie has a lot to do with Freud’s bio I read this month – this reading has given me a new understanding about the film.  

 

 

3719 - O MISTÉRIO DA FELICIDADE (2016)

.      O MISTÉRIO DA FELICIDADE (EL MISTERIO DE LA FELICIDAD, ARGENTINA, 2016) - Santiago (Guillermo Francella) e Eugenio (Fabián Arenillas) são sócios e grandes amigos. Quando Eugenio desaparece sem deixar pistas, Santiago se dá conta da gravidade do problema após Laura (Ines Estévez), esposa do amigo, lhe contar que ele a deixou. Juntos, os dois seguem para o Brasil a fim de reunir as peças que explicam o seu desaparecimento. No entanto, aos poucos, os sentimentos entre eles começam a se confundir. Santiago and Eugenio are more than friends, they are lifelong business partners. They understand each other without words, they care for each other, they need each other. One day Eugenio disappears without leaving any clues behind. Santiago immediately notices his absence, but only realizes what have happened when Eugenio's wife, Laura, lost and hopeless assures him that Eugenio has left. Santiago and Laura begin a journey in order to find him and end up discovering that they prefer to stay together in this quest rather than finding out where he is.

 

3718 - O GÂNGSTER (2007)

Dois grandes

O GANGSTER (AMERICAN GANSGSTER, USA, 2007) – Ridley Scott, Denzel Washington e Russel Crowe são obrigatórios. Isso explica por que o filme é tão bom.  Frank Lucas (Denzel) estabeleceu quase sozinho toda a rede de tráfico de heroína nos EUA e foi responsável por viciar milhares de pessoas na mais destrutiva das drogas. Discreto, voou abaixo do radar das autoridades, mas encontrou num detetive obstinado (Crowe) alguém capaz de qualquer coisa para prendê-lo. Ridely Scott, Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe are obligatory. This explains why the movie is so good. Frank Lucas, (Denzel) established a heroin network in the USA. Low-profile, escaped from the authorities’ radar, but not from an obstinate detective (Crowe), willing to go to any lenghts to arrest him.     

 

3717 - OS HOMENS PREFEREM AS LOURAS (1953)

Jane Russel e MM

  OS HOMENS PREFEREM AS LOURAS (GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, USA, 1953) – Apesar da fama de entretenimento desmiolado, o filme de Howard Hanks é mais do que um canal para Jane Russel e Marilyn Monroe desfilarem seus atributos físicos - revendo o filme, pode-se perceber que, mesmo numa comédia despretensiosa do pós-guerra, as duas brilham no que sabem fazer de melhor: serem lindas e mesmerizantes, com a medida certa do talento único de duas dos maiores ícones do cinema. Despite being considered just a brainless entertainment flick, Howard’s Hanks’ movie is more than a mere vehicle for Jane Russel and Marilyn Monroe display their physical attributes – watching the movie again, we can sense that, even in a post-war comedy, both actresses are on the top of their craft: gorgeous and mesmerizing in the right measure of the unique talent of two great icons of the cinema.    

 

3716 - RELATOS DO MUNDO (2020)

Tom Hanks e Helena Zengel

RELATOS DO MUNDO (NEWS OF THE WORLD, USA, 2020) – Tom Hanks é uma aposta que não pode dar errado. É o seu primeiro western, se não considerarmos o xerife Woody de TOY STORY. Aqui, ele é um veterano da Guerra Civil que concorda levar a uma menina criada pelos índios até seus tios, contra a vontade dela. Depois de centenas de milhas e muitos perigos, eles tentam achar um lar para ambos. A fotografia é exuberante, a menina Helena Zengel é uma graça silenciosa, Tom Hanks faz a gente torcer por ele o tempo todo e o diretor Paul Greengrass é um dos mestres do cinema contemporâneo. Tom Hanks cannot go wrong. This is his first full western, if we do not consider sheriff Woody in TOY STORY. A Civil War veteran agrees to deliver a girl, taken by the Kiowa people years ago, to her aunt and uncle, against her will. They travel hundreds of miles and face grave dangers as they search for a place that either can call home. The photography is exuberant, Helena Zengel is a silent grace, Tom Hanks makes us root for him and Paul Greengrass is one of the masters of the current cinema scenario. 

 

3715 - ARTHUR MILLER, ESCRITOR (2018)

ARTHUR MILLER, ESCRITOR (USA, 2018) - Narrado pelo ponto de vista de sua filha, Rebecca Miller, o longa combina entrevistas realizadas ao longo de décadas com inúmeros materiais inéditos e é uma justa homenagem a um dos grandes escritores do século XX. Dividindo a vida profissional e pessoal de Miller em seis partes, o documentário revela o homem por trás do ícone, investigando sua infância, suas raízes como artista e os principais eventos do século XX que moldaram sua vida. Além das conversas de Rebecca Miller com seu pai, uma boa parte do documentário cobre o casamento de Miller com Marilyn Monroe. Ele relata que disse a ela nunca ter visto uma pessoa tão triste. Observando MM com atenção, vemos que ele estava certo. Narrated from his daughter’s point of view, the documentary mixes old and new interviews and is a fair homage to one of the greatest writers of the XX century. Dividing Miller’s personal and professional life in six parts, the documentary reveals the man behind the icon, shedding light on several parts of his life, including his marriage to Marilyn Monroe. He said he had never seen such a sad person. Observing MM attentively, we can say he was right.   

 

3714 - A COSTUREIRA DE SONHOS (2018)

Imperdível para quem sonha

A COSTUREIRA DE SONHOS (SIR, ÍNDIA, 2017) – A cada dia que passa, eu me torno mais fã do cinema indiano. Este filme é uma preciosidade: é uma história sobre sentimentos colidindo fortemente com os costumes de uma sociedade tão intrigante como a indiana. Uma empregada se apaixona pelo patrão – deixo as circunstâncias desta situação para serem descobertas durante o filme – e, a partir daí, o diretor Rohena Gera vai construindo um filme cheio de delicadezas, sonhos e entendimentos, em torno de uma ideia tão simples quanto inalcançável numa cultura tão compartimentalizada: o amor que nasce dos silêncios. Obra-prima. Gradually, I become a big fan of the Indian cinema. This movie is a gem: it is a story about feeling strongly colliding with customs of the intriguing Indian society. A maid falls in love with her boss – I left the circumstances of the situation to be known during the movie – and, from then on, director Rohena Gera assembles a story fraught with delicacies, dreams and understanding around an idea so simple as unobtainable in such compartmentalized culture: love that thrives from silence. Masterpiece!   

     

3713 - BREAKING BAD - TEMPORADA 2 - 13 EPISÓDIOS

1.  BREAKING BAD – TEMPORADA 2 – 13 EPISÓDIOS (USA, 2009) – Walter White e Jesse continuam com seus planos. Nesta segunda temporada, Anna Gunn mostra como é boa atriz no papel da esposa de Walter. Equilibrando-se entre o apoio ao marido e a desconfiança a respeito de seu comportamento estranho, Anna Gunn tem uma atuação fascinante. BB é uma obra-prima. Walter White and Jesse go on with their plans. In this second season, Anna Gunn confirms that she is a unique actress – she finds the right balance between being supportive of her husband and being suspicious of his unusual behavior. Anna Gunn is a superlative actress in all senses. Moreover, BB is a masterpiece.
