O CÍRCULO (THE CIRCLE, USA, 2017)– Universos distópico estão na moda no cinema, mostrando um cenário futurístico e pouca esperança. O CÍRCULO traz esta distopia para uma realidade mais contemporânea, ao focar uma liberdade extrema, que acaba levando à supervisão e dominação completa. O CÍRCULO adota a tática de BLACK MIRROR, de aprofundar e intensificar uma tecnologia que já existe para, então, desdobrar as consequências possíveis para seu uso. Porém, ao contrário de BM, este filme comete um pecado que compromete tudo: vilaniza a tecnologia em si, sem investigar quais traços de comportamento humano ela pode encorajar, coisa que BM faz com excelência ao olhar, de dentro, os efeitos deletérios do uso abusivo da tecnologia. BM não julga, mas sim pergunta se estamos conscientes das consequências de nossas escolhas. O CÍRCULO promete muito, mas entrega pouco, apostando ingenuamente no maniqueísmo fácil: de um lado, vítimas inocentes; de outro, uma empresa do mal, de ambições totalitárias e discurso messiânico. O diretor James Ponsoldt evoca o Big Brother ameaçador e censório, mas sem a perspectiva histórica e o espírito crítico de Orwell. Tematicamente, o filme coloca em discussão um universo em que empresas de tecnologia são objeto de idolatria e as redes sociais se transformam em vício socialmente estimulado. O roteiro é pobre, tudo é óbvio e definitivo, não há espaço para reflexão e falta margem de interpretação e desenvolvimento para os personagens. Aliás, o que Tom Hanks está fazendo neste filme? ENGLISH: dystopic universes are in fashion nowadays, showing a futuristic scenario and hopelessness. THE CIRCLE brings this dystopia to a more contemporaneous reality by focusing extreme liberty that leads to supervision and total domination. THE CIRCLE adopts the BLACK MIRROR’s tactics for deepening and intensifying a technology that already exists and then explore the possible consequences for its use. However, differently from BM, this movie commits a sin that compromises everything: villainizes technology in itself, without investigating which human behavior traits it might encourage, what BM does magisterially, by looking from inside the destructive effects of the abusive use of technology. BM doesn’t judge, it simply asks if we are conscious of the consequences of our choices. THE CIRCLE promises a lot, but delivers very little, naively betting on the easy Manicheism: on one side, innocent victim; on the other, an evil enterprise with totalitarian ambitions and messianic speech. The director James Ponsoldt evokes the menacing and censorious Big Brother, but without Orwell’s historical perspective and criticism. Thematically, the movie discusses a universe in which technology enterprises are worshiped and the social networks become a socially stimulated vice. The plot is poor, everything is obvious and definitive, there is no room for careful consideration and character development. By the way, what is Tom Hanks doing in this movie?
