 ELVIS, THE SEARCHER (USA, 2018) – Ótimo documentário sobre a carreira de Elvis. Apesar dos fatos já conhecidos, é sempre interessante ver como Elvis era realmente uma força da natureza desde o seu início. Quando volta do serviço militar e começa a série de filmes de baixa qualidade em Hollywood, sua carreira esfria. Ao retomar os shows em 1968, ele recria o fascínio em torno da sua figura e começa seus famosos shows em Las Vegas. A very good documentary about the rise and decline of Elvis. Despite the already known facts, it is always fascinating to see how Elvis was a force of nature, since his beginning. When he comes back from the military service and stars several low-budget movies in Hollywood, his career goes adrift. Back to live shows in 1968, he recreates the appeal around him and tours successfully in Las Vegas.

3792 = IN A LONELY PLACE (1950)

 IN A LONELY PLACE (USA, 1950) – Noir clássico com Humphrey Bogart, no papel de um arrogante roteirista de Hollywood, envolvido com uma atriz iniciante e um assassinato, claro. Uma das melhores atuações de Bogart, num filme pouco conhecido. A excepcional fotografia em preto e branco está perfeitamente alinhada com a atmosfera pesada da história. A very adult film about a surly Hollywood writer, a would-be actress, and a murder, of course. Among the very best Bogart performances, yet this film is practically unknown. The film is very pessimistic, which is a part of the film noir tradition and the pessimistic outlook of the movie blends excellently with the stylish black and white cinematography.

3791 - A GUERRA DO AMANHÃ (2020)

 GUERRA DO AMANHÃ (THE TOMORROW WAR, USA, 2020) – Mosaico de vários filmes do gênero. Roteiro pífio e Chris Pratt pouco inspirado. Se quiser assistir, desligue o cérebro e ignore as piadas sem noção, o script ruim e o tom novelesco. Tudo parece ter sido feito por alguma inteligência artificial, sem a inteligência, apesar do elenco qualificado. Uma colagem de vários filmes do gênero, sem qualquer sentido. This movie really wants us to turn our brains off, to not think about it. It wants us to ignore the out of place jokes, incredible coincidences, forced character motivations, soap opera level drama. The script has no soul, like it was written by a damaged android. A senseless collage of many movies.

.       DOLLY PARTON, HERE I AM (USA, 2020) – Documentário muito bem feito sobre a carreira de Dolly, com boas imagens de arquivo e entrevistas com seus amigos. A well-made documentary focusing on some of Dolly’s more iconic songs and rolls, and just the persona that is Dolly Parton. Great use of archival footage and interviews from fellow musicians and friends.

3789 - A PROVA (2005)

 A PROVA (PROOF, USA, 2005) – Não deveria rever esse filme, mas revi. Poderia ter evitado o choque nostálgico de ver Gwyneth Paltrow em cena, mas não resisti. Até porque todo crédito do filme deve mesmo cair sobre ela. Sua atuação poderosa e intensa como Catherine, filha de um matemático famoso (Anthony Hopkins), cuja demência pode ter sido passada para ela, é, até hoje, motivo para que meu coração se fragmente numa dízima periódica. I should not have watched this movie again, but I did. I might have avoided seeing Gwyneth Paltrow, but I could not help it. Inasmuch as most of the acclaim should be falling upon her, who gives a powerful full-bodied textured performance as Catherine, who might have inherited her genius at math from her famous father (Anthony Hopkins). Gwyneth’s acting has been the cause for my heart to fragment in a repeating decimal number since I first saw her. 

 

3788 - BOSCH - TEMPORADA 7 (8 EPISÓDIOS)

Tal filha, tal pai...

BOSCH, TEMPORADA 7, 8 EPISÓDIOS - (BOSCH, 2020) – Apesar da temporada curtinha, BOSCH chega ao fim com a mesma qualidade. Titus Welliver e todo o elenco estão em total consonância com seus personagens. Além disso, Los Angeles salta aos olhos com a vastidão plana de suas ruas, e a casa de Bosch é certamente o local mais espetacular da cidade dos anjos. Vamos esperar, ansiosos, pelo spin-off da série. Despite the short season, BOSCH keeps the high standards. Besides, Los Angeles’ plain vastness is eye-catching, and Bosch’s home is the coolest place in the City of Angels. Looking forward to seeing the spin-off. Prime.  

 

3787 - TERCEIRA PESSOA (2013)

TERCEIRA PESSOA (THIRD PERSON, 2013) – Esse é um filme para escritores. Ele também explora a traição da confiança em seus vários aspectos. Paul Haggis sempre fez filmes com histórias interligadas, e TP é exatamente isso: Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Adrien Brody, Mila Kunis e James Franco são parte desta construção melodramática (sem nenhuma conotação negativa) sobre relacionamentos numa sociedade cuja natureza ainda não foi inteiramente compreendida.  Third Person seeks to explore the betrayal of trust—the betrayal of fidelity and friendship. Paul Haggis, the director, has made a career out of making films that interweave numerous story lines. In this case, Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Adrien Brody, Mila Kunis, and James Franco all comprise a wonderful ensemble that demands a range of powerful emotions to drive this story through its incessant melodrama (no negative connotation applied). The narrative here focuses on the romantic relationships and affairs that still rule society and humanity's untamable nature.

AMANTES (TWO LOVERS, USA, 2005) – Sim, confesso: Gwyneth Paltrow está neste filme. Sim, temos Joaquin Phoenix também, mas é ela a razão maior, por motivos inevitáveis, mas que deveriam ser evitados a todo custo. Ele é Leonard, sentimentalmente dividido entre Sandra (Vanessa Shaw) e Michelle (Gwyneth). Mas o filme vai além disso: é também sobre pessoas tomadas pelos sentimentos e por suas carências, geralmente grandes obstáculos para as melhores decisões. Yes, I confess: Gwyneth Paltrow is in the movie. Yes, Joaquin Phoenix is there, but she is the major reason for inevitable reasons – the same that should be avoided at any cost. He is Leonard, emotionally divided between Sandra (Vanessa Shaw) and Michelle (Gwyneth). However, the movie goes a little bit farther: it is also about people taken by their feelings and needs, generally great obstacles to the best decisions.

O filme, o terceiro da trilogia de Kieslowski, nos dá um sentido de culminância como nunca se viu na história do cinema. E mais: ele nos dá esperança, num mundo repleto de caminhos desencontrados. Como muitos dos trabalhos do diretor, o filme é sobre o acaso e a coincidência. Seus personagens se desenvolvem e interagem organicamente, entrelaçando-se num roteiro rico em deixas emocionais em vez de palavras. Raramente um filme fundiu de modo tão brilhante tantas ideias, imagens e emoções – um compêndio sobre a vida e a arte, numa história inesquecível. With Red, there is a real sense of culmination unlike any other. Wistful, melancholy, yet life-affirming, the film offers hope in world full of supposed mistaken paths. RED is so devoid of a linear, defined plot that anything could happen to any of these people and the possibilities that this story could have veered off in so many directions had one crucial element not taken place at the exact moment and place. The characters evolve organically, crossing paths in a script fraught with emotional clues instead of words. Rarely has a movie combined so brightly ideas, images and emotions – a compilation about life and arts in an unforgettable story.

1.       A IGUALDADE É BRANCA (TROIS COLEURS, BLANC, França, 1994) – Julie Delpy é obrigatória. Ela poderia ter tido mais tempo em cena, nesta segunda edição da trilogia de Krzysztof Kieslowski. Mesmo no papel de má, ela resplandece com suavidade e está tão bela que dói. The central quest for liberty is personal; the struggle for equality is fundamentally social. White is the most conventional of the three Color films, and Julie Delpy makes it memorable, despite the little time she has in scene. Despite playing a merciless character, she is so beautiful that it hurts. 

 

3783 - LIBERDADE É AZUL (1993)

Juliette Binoche, mostrando a bela face da dor

 .     A LIBERDADE É AZUL (TROIS COULEURS, BLUE França, 1993) – Juliette Binoche é obrigatória. Sim, foi por ela que assisti a esse filme. Não me enganei: a história é dela, em todos os aspectos. A liberdade do título se refere a forma com a qual sua personagem lida com a imensa dor de ter perdido tudo que amava. O filme está repleto de significados sutis e crescentes a cada cena. Juliette Binoche is obligatory. Yes, she was the reason I watched the movie. I was not wrong: the story is entirely hers, in every aspect. The freedom of the title refers to how her character copes with the immense grief after having lost everything she loved. The movie is filled, almost drenched, in subtle meaning which grows stronger at every frame.
