Esta adaptação de uma história de Jules Verne é uma produção típica dos anos 60 e é uma das melhores da época, começando pela trilha mesmerizante de Bernard Herrmann e a animação genial em stop-motion do mestre Ray Harryhousen. A envolvente atmosfera de aventura fantástica permeia um roteiro seguro que assume um tom mais político a partir da entrada do Capitão Nemo (Herbert Lom) no terço final da história. O stop-motion não é apenas uma técnica de efeitos especiais, mas, sim, uma forma de arte, e deve ser apreciada assim, como um traço de genialidade do maior de todos, o mestre Harryhousen. Outro elemento do filme – aparentemente inesperado - merece destaque: o microvestido de Beth Logan, muito bem recheado pela atriz, rivaliza em atenção com os efeitos especiais de Harryhousen, e deixa claro a preocupação de erotizar, já naquela época, uma aventura tipicamente juvenil. The engaging atmosphere of fantastic adventure permeates a safe script that takes on a more political tone from the entrance of Captain Nemo (Herbert Lom) in the final third of the story. Stop-motion is not just a special effects technique, but an art form, and should be appreciated as such, as a trait of genius of the greatest of all, the master Harryhousen. Another element of the film – apparently unexpected – deserves to be highlighted: Beth Logan's micro dress, very well stuffed by the actress, rivals Harryhousen's special effects in attention, and makes clear the concern to eroticize, already at that time, a typically juvenile adventure.
