O FILHO DE FRANKENSTEIN (SON OF
FRANKENSTEIN, USA, 1939)
a grande surpresa do filme. Made 8 years after James Whale’s classic,
SOF is as good as THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. The good writing is flanked by a
perfect performance by Basil Rathbone, as the son of Frankenstein, and by Bela
Lugosi, as Ygor, scarier than the monster himself. Yes, it is Lugosi’s
performance and characterization is the big surprise of the movie. Lugosi’s
bizarre appearance and mannerisms as Ygor contributed to an indelible
performance, and he reprised the role in The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942).
Karloff, on the other hand, is less striking in Son
of Frankenstein than in the film’s two predecessors, in part
because—due to the explosion at the end of Bride of Frankenstein—the monster is
once again mute, having lost the ability to speak.
