.       PACTO DE SANGUE (DOUBLE INDEMNITY, USA, 1944) – Clássicos dos clássicos do cinema noir, DI é um exercício de virtuosismo de Billy Wilder sobre o roteiro baseado em um romance de James M. Cain. Os diálogos são afiados, e o elenco é a representação viva do cinismo, suspense e humor que caracterizam o gênero. Um dos maiores films de todos os tempos, justamente porque o foco está totalmente na cinematografia e no modo com que a história é contada. A novidade da época era revelar quem era o autor do crime log no início – isso levou o espectador a se concentrar mais nos outros elementos do filme, que era o objetivo de Wilder. This is one of the best films of all time, not necessarily because of its story but because of the acting, direction, cinematography, lighting, and just the way that the story itself was told. At the time the film was released, the idea of revealing who the killer was in the opening scene was virtually unheard of, but it ended up being very effective because it allowed the audience to concentrate more on other elements of the film, which was the goal of Billy Wilder

 

3687 - BRIEF ENCOUNTER (1945)

O amor pode acontecer numa estação

       BRIEF ENCOUNTER (USA, 1945) – Como muitos clássicos, o filme tem todos os seus elementos equilibrados e tudo contribui para o essencial: a luz, o cenário inesperado para um romance e a música de Rachmaninov. Raramente a instabilidade de um caso amoroso foi tão bem apresentada. Algumas pessoas mais conservadoras tenham dificuldade para entender que certas paixões podem acontecer em qualquer lugar. Like many classics this film is simply constructed with all the elements in balance so that none stands out. Everything in it contributes something essential; the lighting, the unromantic railway station sets, the minor characters and of course the music, the ultra-romantic Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no 2. The emotional rollercoaster of the illicit affair has seldom been better portrayed. Perhaps it is a little understated for some conventional tastes but no-one viewing this movie would not appreciate that people, anywhere, can be as passionate as the rest of us.  

 

3686 - MISSÃO IMPOSSÍVEL (1996)

A cena clássica do filme

        MISSÃO IMPOSSÍVEL (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, USA, 1996) – esta primeira edição da série tem um enredo complexo – e isso talvez seja um de seus pontos altos. Uma das atrações é a presença da bela Kristin Scott Thomas, como parte do time de Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise). The film does weave a complicated plot and requires the audience's attention, but that is actually one of the film's strengths. One of the highlights is Kirstin Scott Thomas’ presence as part of Ethan Hunt’s team. It doesn't proceed in an entirely normal manner, hitting all the usual beats you would expect from a Mission: Impossible story, so while it follows the formula to a degree, it also manages to stand that formula on its head. If the film does fall short, plot wise, it is principally in one area involving a central twist to the story. From the moment the backstory for this twist is introduced early in the film until the plot finally reveals it, there is nothing terribly surprising about it. The final scenes of the film do suggest that it is not what it would seem to be, but even still, the fact that so major a plot element in a film that is supposed to be a suspense thriller is so easily deduced is a bit of a letdown.

  MANK (USA, 2020) – Herman J. Mankiewicz foi um dos maiores roteiristas de Hollywood nos anos 30. Era uma personalidade tão cativante quanto problemática: sempre bebendo além da conta, sua vida era alguma coisa perto do caos. Para viver Mank, David Fincher, um dos diretores mais rigorosos do cinema, escolheu um ator à altura do personagem: Gary Oldman está perfeito, assim como todo o elenco. MANK é um filme para quem sabe apreciar os filmes das décadas de 30 e 40. O figurino, os cenários e a primorosa fotografia em preto e branco são uma festa para os olhos. Falando em festa para os olhos, Amanda Seyfried tem uma das suas melhores atuações. Assistir a este filme é ter uma aula sobre a revolução provocada por CIDADÃO KANE, cujo roteiro foi encomendado a Mank por Orson Welles. Por isso, somos tragados para dentro de uma história tão requintadamente contada, que não há como considerar MANK menos do que uma obra-prima. Netflix. Herman J. Mankiewicz was one of the most important screenwriters in Hollywood during the 30s. He was so captivating as problematic: always drinking too much, his life is something close to the chaos. David Fincher’s choice to play the leading role is up to the challenge: Gary Oldman is perfect and also is the cast. MANK is a movie for those who knows how to appreciate the movies of this era. The costumes, the scenario and the exquisite black and white photography are a sight for sore eyes. Speaking of a sight, Amanda Seyfried has one of her best performances. Watching this movie is to attend a class on the revolution caused by CITIZEN KANE, whose script was requested from Mank by Orson Welles. Thus, we are dragged into a story as masterfully told that this can not be considered less than a masterpiece. Netflix.    

 

3684 - O SOM DO SILÊNCIO (2019)

        O SOM DO SILÊNCIO (THE SOUND OF METAL, USA, 2019) – Riz Ahmed tem o dom de interpretar jovens mergulhados na mais profunda angústia. Aqui, ele é um baterista de heavy-metal que vai perdendo a audição e vê seu mundo desmoronar. A direção do estreante Darius Marder é estupenda, assim como a atuação de todo o elenco e, claro, a edição de som. O roteiro coloca questões sobre a importância da aceitação em relação ao que não podemos mudar. Ao focar numa perda tão essencial para quem sempre viveu num mundo de sons, o filme nos permite pensar nas lutas realmente importantes, nas pequenas coisas que nos fazem humanos – tudo de uma forma incisiva de que poucos diretores seriam capazes. Riz Ahmed has a flair for playing deeply anghised young men. Here, he is a heavy-metal drummer whose life is thrown into freefall when he begins to lose his hearing. Darius Marder’s directing debut is outstanding as is the cast performance and, of course, the sound editing. The script brings questions about the importance of accepting what we cannot change. By focusing on someone whose entire existence revolves around a world of sound losing that which defines his life, it gives the viewer pause to consider what life can be like when we learn to accept and let go. There is so much more to life than the small corners of existence we live in and this film paints that reality with both tremendous empathy and a bluntness that lesser writers and directors would avoid.

 

3683 - PACTO DE FUGA (2020)

PACTO DE FUGA (Chile, 2020) – Em 1990, 49 presos políticos fugiram de uma prisão por um túnel construído durante 18 meses. Usando como locação quase unicamente o presídio, o diretor David Albala captura os horrores da ditadura de Pinochet e mostra como um grupo de homens honrados lutaram por justiça e por sua liberdade. Há alguma coisa de UM SONHO DE LIBERDADE e FUGINDO DO INFERNO, e isso é exatamente o que dá ao filme a dimensão heroica de lutar pela liberdade, apesar de todos os obstáculos. In 1990, 49 political prisoners escaped from a tunnel that took 18 months do dig. Using almost only a prison location for most of the setting, director David Albala captures the horrors of the Pinochet dictatorship and shows how a group of honored men fought for justice and their freedom. There is a dash of THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION and THE GREAT ESCAPE, and this is exactly what gives the movie the heroic dimension of fighting for freedom, despite all the setbacks. Prime.  

 

3682 - AS CONFISSÕES DE SCHMIDT (2002)

Um ator superlativo

  AS CONFISSÕES DE SCHMIDT (ABOUT SCHMIDT, USA, 2002) – Jack Nicholson, numa das maiores atuações de sua carreira, é Warren Schmidt, um vendedor de seguros cuja vida perde todo o sentido quando ele se aposenta. É um dos filmes mais belos e tristes que já vi. De qualquer forma, o roteiro insere algum humor, o que só destaca o drama vivido por Nicholson diante de uma vida repentinamente vazia, na qual ele tenta resgatar os afetos que lhe restam, como a relação com sua filha distante. (Hope Davis). Um filme tão obrigatório quanto seu ator.  Nicholson plays Warren Schmidt, an insurance salesman, whose life crashes down on him when he retires. It is one of the most beautiful, but also one of the saddest movies I have ever seen. Anyhow, the script inserts some humor that only highlights his inner drama of a life suddenly empty, in which he tries to rescue what is left of his affections, like the estranged relationship with his daughter (Hope Davis). An obligatory movie, an obligatory actor.

OS CARRASCOS TAMBÉM MORREM (HANGMEN ALSO DIE, USA, 1943) – O filme mostra os eventos subsequentes ao assassinato de Reinhard Heydrich, um dos principais arquitetos do Holocausto. Fritz Lang, também um fugitivo do Nazismo, se atém às tramoias da resistência, que tenta esconder o assassino, e na perseguição da Gestapo, que tenta encontrá-lo. Atenção para a assustadora cena inicial, na qual Heydrich, furioso, expressa suas opiniões e dá ordens. The movie displays the aftermath of Reinhard Heydrich’s assassination, one of the Holocaust architects. Fritz Lang, a refugee from Nazi Europe, covers the resistance’s plans to hide the assassin and registers the efforts of Gestapo to arrest him. Attention to the scary initial scene, in which an angry Heydrich expresses his opinions about the Czechs. On YouTube.  

 

3680 - MISSÃO IMPOSSÍVEL 2 (2000)

        MISSÃO IMPOSSÍVEL 2 (MI-2, USA, 2000) – Esta segunda edição de MI não empolga, muito por causa das atuações ruins e das sequências de ação bem abaixo da média. Tom Cruise se esforça, mas o roteiro não ajuda. Apertem os cintos, o diretor sumiu. Notadamente, há uma intenção de um grande filme de ação, mas o filme de John Woo não decola e falha ao tentar manter uma conexão emocional com o espectador. O resultado é um filme sonolento, com um desfecho comum. The story is not so good, the acting is unconvincing enough, and the action sequences are far from well put together, but they help to divert the audience’s attention: where did the director go? Tom Cruise does his best, but the script is very weal. If you watch the movie, just don't expect it to be the phenomenal gift from the action movie gods that it was made out to be. John Woo's sequences are mildly developed, not exactly mind-blowing, and artificially exciting. Woo really tries to push his elements to the edge, designing action that people have never seen, but the film fails to make the emotional connection between audience and characters and apparently tries to compensate with an overdose of action. The result is a numbing experience and a yawn provoking ending as good triumphs over evil.

 

3679 - A FELICIDADE NÃO SE COMPRA (1946)

A FELICIDADE NÃO SE COMPRA (IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, USA, 1946) – A obra-prima de Frank Capra Frank Capra é um daqueles filmes que causam uma impressão duradoura em quem vê, por encapsular a atmosfera do Natal no pós-guerra. James Stewart e Donna Reed são os pilares de uma história sobre a experiência transformadora do protagonista. The movie creates an unforgettable atmospheric experience that remains tattooed in your memory years after viewing. The outdated effects aside, this film has stood the test of time as a timeless classic. All the cast are superb special mention to Donna Reed as George's wife, Mary, it's Stewart who leads the way in the class stakes. As he drifts from homely, lovable dreamer, a man sacrificing those dreams for others to benefit. To his descent into despair and the undertaking of a nightmarish odyssey, Stewart captivates in every frame, and more telling is that he is believable with each transformation of George's state of mind. This film has does not have one false moment. The casting is perfect. The story moves along at a brisk pace. The child actors are just as good as the adults.

 

3678 - ABSOLUTAMENTE CERTO (1957)

ABSOLUTAMENTE CERTO (BRASIL, 1957) – O filme é um interessante documento histórico – pelas cenas filmadas nas ruas da São Paulo de 1957, pelo que mostra da TV brasileira aos sete anos de idade, pelo registro dos programas populares de TV e também pelo fato de ter sido dirigida pelo primeiro e até hoje único brasileiro a ganhar a Palma de Ouro em Cannes, Anselmo Duarte, em 1962, com o PAGADOR DE PROMESSAS. No entanto, o filme peca por uma edição pobre e atuações paradoxalmente “fabricadas”, para dar um perfil mais naturalista, baseado no neorrealismo italiano. The movie is an interesting historical document – there are scenes of the streets of São Paulo in 1957, as well as the TV programs at the time. Anselmo Duarte, the first and only winner of 1962 Palme d’Or (O PAGADOR DE PROMESSAS). The poor editing and artificial performances, based on the Italian neorealism, does not any good to the final outcome. Canal Brasil. 

 

3677 - O CIDADÃO ILUSTRE (2017)

CIDADÃO ILUSTRE (EL CIUDADANO ILUSTRE, Argentina, 2017) – Ganhador do Nobel de Literatura Daniel Mantovani (Oscar Martinez), há décadas na Europa, aceita o convite para voltar à sua cidade, Salas, na Argentina, para receber um prêmio, e onde encontrar uma inesperada hostilidade. Mais uma obra-prima do cinema argentino. O filme questiona o papel do artista, sua ética e seus compromissos. Mantovani confronta suas origens e seus próprios personagens, fora da sua zona de conforto. A recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature, who has been living in Europe for decades, accepts an invitation to receive a prize. In Argentina he finds both similarities and irreconcilable differences with the people of his hometown.  The movie questions the role of the artist, his ethics and his commitments. Mantovani, the main character, confronts his origins and his own creatures face to face, outside the artificiality of his new life as an European and a very well-succeeded writer. 

 

3676 - VOANDO PARA CASA (1995)

VOANDO PARA CASA (FLY AWAY HOME, USA, 1995) – Depois que sua mãe morre num acidente de carro, Amy (Anna Paquin), 13 anos, vai morar com seu pai (Jeff Daniels), no Canadá, com quem pouco conviveu, e adota uma ninhada de gansos, órfãos, depois que construtores derrubam uma floresta, para, gradativamente, ensiná-los a voar. Poético e cheio de imagens deslumbrantes, é um daqueles filmes para ver com os filhos. É impressionante como Anna Paquin sempre foi expressiva e boa atriz (ganhou um Oscar de Atriz Coadjuvante com 11 anos, em O PIANO), mas não teve a carreira esperada por todos. Amy is only 13 years old when her mother is killed in an auto wreck in New Zealand. She goes to Canada to live with her father, an eccentric inventor whom she barely knows. Amy is miserable in her new life...that is until she discovers a nest of goose eggs that were abandoned when developers began tearing up a local forest. Poetic and full of stunning images, it is one of those movies to be watched with our children. Anna Paquin has always been impressive and good actress (she won the Oscar for Supporting Role for THE PIANO, when she was only 11), but did not have the career we all expected. HBO.

Um dia, uma freira polonesa implora que ela vá ao convento. Lá, Mathilde vê sua vida mudada, ao descobrir várias freiras grávidas, após terem sido estupradas por soldados alemães e russos.Poland, Winter of 1945. Mathilde Beaulieu (Lou de Lâage) is a young intern working with a branch of the French Red Cross. They are on a mission to find, treat and repatriate French survivors of the German camps. One day, a Polish nun arrives in the hospital. In very poor French, she begs Mathilde to come to her convent. Mathilde life and beliefs change when she discovers the advanced state of pregnancy that affect several of the Sisters of the convent just outside the hospital where she performs. She's being an atheist and to whom she's treating, the believers, is exactly the opposite kind. But not just her, the nuns as well put aside their differences to overcome their situation.
