A começar com o protagonista, Sharlto Copley, tão estranho quanto os alienígenas confinados no distrito 9 de Johanesburgo. Sem nunca ter atuado antes, ele foi escolhido pelo diretor Neill Blomkamp depois de aparecer em um curta. D9 foi o primeiro filme documentário a ser indicado para o Oscar de melhor filme. This movie makes us uncomfortable in many ways. It reminds us of David Cronenberg’s THE FLY. To start with, Sharlto Copley, is as weird as the aliens confined in the district 9 of the title. He had not acted before and had no intention of pursuing an acting career. He stumbled into the leading role as director Neill Blomkamp placed him on camera during the short film. The first documentary-style film to be nominated for Best Picture Oscar.
