ILHA MISTERIOSA (MYSTERIOUS ISLAND, USA, 1962) - Durante a
Guerra Civil Americana, um grupo de prisioneiros foge de balão e acaba numa ilha
sem registro no Pacífico. Na história, saem de Richmond, cidade onde morei, na
Virgínia. A história de Jules Verne é turbinada, nesta vez, pelo trabalho
magistral de Ray Harryhousen, o mestre do stop-motion. Herbert Lom está magnífico
como o Capitão Nemo, poeticamente desiludido com os rumos da humanidade. Mas é
a trilha genial de Bernard Herrmann que emoldura a narrativa muito bem conduzida
pelo diretor Cy Endfield. Atenção para Betty Rogan, antecipando o modelito de Raquel
Welch em ONE MILLION YEARS B.C., em 1966, com o mesmo impacto estético. During the American Civil War,
a group of prisoners escapes in a balloon and end up on a uncharted Pacific island.
In the story, they leave Richmond, where I lived, in Virginia. The Jules Verne’s
story is enhanced, this time, by the masterful work of Ray Harryhousen, the
stop-motion genius. Herbert Lom is magnificent as Captain Nemo, poetically frustrated
with humanity’s destiny. However, it is Bernard Herrmann’s outstanding soundtrack that encapsulates the well-conducted narrative of the director Cy Endfield. Attention to Betty Logan, who anticipates
Raquel Welsh’s outfit in ONE MILLION YEARS B.C., in 1966, with a similar aesthetic
impact.
