3807 - UM CRIME PERFEITO (1998)

        UM CRIME PERFEITO (A PERFECT MURDER, USA, 1998) – Sandy enrolado: Michael Douglas, antecipando seu personagem em WALL STREET, suspeita que sua esposa, Emily (Gwyneth Paltrow) o trai com Aragon (Viggo Mortensen) e refaz a trama hitchcockiana DISQUE M PARA MATAR. A espinha dorsal da trama é bem executada até uma certa irregularidade no seu trecho final. De fato, eu devia ter evitado rever Gwyneth. Sandy is in trouble: Michael Douglas, anticipating his character in WALL STREET, suspects that his wife, Emily (Gwyneth Paltrow) is having an affair with Aragon (Viggo Mortensen) and builds up the hitchcokian DIAL M FOR MURDER. The central set piece is well executed, and the build up to it is well done also; but it has to be said that the film starts to fall apart a little after that. I should have avoided meeting Gwyneth again. 

3806 - SEGREDOS DE UM FUNERAL (2009)

O grande Robert Duvall

.       SEGREDOS DE UM FUNERAL (GET LOW, USA, 2009) – Robert Duvall é um dos maiores atores do cinema. Neste filme, ele tem o veículo perfeito para mostrar isso, como um ermitão afastado da sociedade por 40 anos, na busca por redenção. Depois de saber da morte de um velho amigo, Feliz (Duvall) se confronta com a própria mortalidade e decide fazer, em vida, um funeral para si mesmo. Sua motivação é saber o que as pessoas da sua comunidade falam sobre ele. Mas, além disso, há o resgate de uma história de amor sufocada por 4 décadas (que transfixou meu coração). O grandíssimo Bill Murray, como um agente funerário, também está perfeito, como sempre. Robert Duvall é obrigatório. Robert Duvall is one of the greatest actors in cinema history. In this movie, he has a perfect vehicle to prove this as a hermit who has secluded himself from society for 40 years and wants a chance at redemption. After hearing the news of an old friend dying, Felix (Duvall) confronts his own mortality and decides to hold a funeral party for himself. The hermit's motive for throwing the funeral is to finally hear all the bad things the townspeople have been saying about him, behind his back for years. Moreover, there is the rescue of a love story lost for four decades (which pierced my heart). The great Bill Murray, as a funeral director, is also perfect, as always. Robert Duvall is obligatory.

Ela continua a ser uma personalidade ao mesmo tempo inspiradora, vulnerável, honesta e corajosa. Open-hearted, vulnerable, genuine, honest, brave and inspiring, this is a long interview with Michelle Obama.

3804 - CÉU VERMELHO-SANGUE (2021)

CÉU VERMELHO-SANGUE (BLOOD RED SKY, USA, Alemanha, 2021) – Tenho grande respeito por histórias que se passam em lugares fechados, como as que acontecem dentro de um avião. O diretor alemão Peter Thorwarth (roteirista do ótimo A ONDA) pegou uma história quase risível e tratou com uma seriedade admirável – sim, ele acredita no filme, e esse respeito é contagiante. Ainda não tenho avaliação mais profunda do que vi, mas reconheço a postura digna de Thorwarth. I respect stories that take place in closed spaces, as the ones inside a plane. The German director Peter Thorwarth (writer of the outstanding THE WAVE) handled seriously an almost laughable story – yes, he has a contagious belief in the movie he directs. Still, I do not have a definite evaluation about the film, but I acknowledge Thorwarth’s dignified posture.  

 

3803 - A ÚLTIMA CARTA DE AMOR (2021)

       A ÚLTIMA CARTA DE AMOR (THE LAST LETTER FROM YOUR LOVER, UK, France, 2021) – Como resistir a um filme sobre cartas de amor? Como resistir a Felicity Jones querendo descobrir por que houve um desencontro e um amor perdido? E, neste trajeto, o resgate do próprio sentimento subitamente desentrenhado de pequenos absurdos, supreendentemente. Filmes com cartas me fascinam. As cenas derradeiras com Ben Cross (o Sarek, pai de Spock, em STAR TREK) são emocionantes. Histórias de amor entrelaçadas podem não mudar sua vida, mas certamente darão um certo alento aos românticos sem esperança e aos fãs de cartas e finais felizes (entre os quais eu me incluo). How to resist a movie about love letters? How to resist Felicity Jones in her pursuit of the reasons of a lost love? And more: the rescue of her own feelings from the absurdities of life. Movies about letters fascinate me. The last scenes with Ben Cross (Sarek, Spock’s father in STAR TREK) are more than touching. Sweet intertwined romance stories may not change your life, but will certainly entertain the hopeless romantics out there and fans of happy endings and love letters (of which I count myself as both).

 

3802 - SETE ANOS NO TIBET (1997)

SETE ANOS NO TIBET (SEVEN YEARS IN TIBET, USA, UK, 1997) - The movie is a star vehicle at heart, aimed more at marketing Pitt's popularity than probing complexities of empire-building and cultural clash that trouble the Tibetan region to this day. Still, the story takes clear stands on moral and ethical issues - such as China's outrageous occupation of its peace-loving neighbor - and may foster new understanding of this ongoing situation. A two-year journey brings him to the isolated Tibetan city of Lhasa, center of the country's Buddhist faith. It is also the home of Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama - still a boy, tantalized by a little knowledge of Western culture and eager for a teacher who'll expand his horizons.

De fato, Ms Hayworth nunca esteve tão bela

BONITA COMO NUNCA (YOU WERE NEVER LOVELIER, USA, 1942) – De fato, Rita Hayworth nunca esteve tão linda como neste filme escapista, mas adorável, passado em Buenos Aires. Por isso, é claro que Fred Astaire vai se apaixonar por ela e, juntos, realizarem duas cenas memoráveis de danças. Uma curiosidade: um jovem de 17 anos, chamado Fidel Castro, está entre os extras de uma cena específica. Ao fim de tudo, Astaire fornece toda a classe necessária a qualquer filme em que esteja, e Rita, mesmerizante, é um prazer para os olhos. Indeed, Rita Hayworth were never lovelier as she is in this escapist but adorable movie. That’s why Fred Astaire falls in love with her and together they perform two memorable dance scenes. A historical trivia: a 17-year-old Fidel Castro is one of the extras in a specific scene. All and all, Astaire adds class to any film in which he appears, and the ravishing Rita Hayworth is eye candy with talent. 

 

3800 - DRUK - MAIS UMA RODADA (2020)

Mads Mikkelsen, perfeito como sempre

DRUK, MAIS UMA RODADA (DRUK, Dinamarca, 2020) – Definitivamente, um dos melhores filmes dos últimos tempos, DRUK é uma reflexão profunda sobre as frustrações existenciais e, sobretudo, um chamado à consciência de que o único momento para ser feliz é agora. Mads Mikkelsen é obrigatório, assim como Kierkegaard, cuja filosofia é essencial para o entendimento de um roteiro tão simples quanto profundo. Imperdível. Definitely, one of the best movies of the recent times, DRUK is a deep reflection about existential frustrations and, moreover, a calling for the conscience that the only moment to be happy is now. Mads Mikkelsen is obligatory, as well as Kierkegaard, whose philosophy is essential for understanding a script as simple as extensive. Unmissable.   

 

3799 - TESE SOBRE UM HOMICÍDIO (2013)

 .       TESE SOBRE UM HOMICÍDIO (TESIS SOBRE UM HOMICIDIO, Argentina, 2013) – Ricardo Darín é obrigatório, assim como quase todos os filmes argentinos. Seguindo o sucesso de O SEGREDO DE SEUS OLHOS, este thriller psicológico tem Darín como um professor de direito que suspeita da participação de um de seus alunos num crime ocorrido na universidade onde leciona. Darín, um dos melhores atores da sua geração, está perfeito. Ricardo Darín is obligatory as well as almost any Argentinian movie. Following up on the success of "The secret in their eyes" comes another Argentine psychological thriller starring Ricardo Darín, a professor of law who suspects one of his students of committing a heinous crime in the university where he teaches a postgraduate course on law. Ricardo Darín's performance is flawless; he has developed into one of the finest actors of his generation.

3798 - TROPA DE ELITE 2, O INIMIGO AGORA É OUTRO (2010)

  TROPA DE ELITE 2, O INIMIGO AGORA É OUTRO (BRASIL, 2010) - Depois de uma operação fracassada, Nascimento é afastado do Bope e agora trabalha como subsecretário de Inteligência na Secretaria de Segurança Pública do Rio de Janeiro. No novo cargo, o ex-capitão é arrastado para uma disputa política sangrenta que envolve funcionários do governo e grupos paramilitares. O primeiro filme é um pouco superior. After a failed operation, Nascimento is removed from BOPE and now is subsecretary of the Department of Public Security in Rio de Janeiro. In his new post, the former captain is dragged to a bloody political dispute involving state workers and the militia. Not as good as the first one. 

 

3797 - 007 SPECTRE (2015)

Léa Seydoux, um ótimo motivo para correr riscos

  007 SPECTRE (USA, UK, 2015) – Sam Mendes e Daniel Craig fazem uma dupla perfeita, desde o excepcional SKYFALL. SPECTRE começa com um fabuloso plano-sequência na Cidade do México, a partir do qual Bond vai se esgueirando dos riscos inerentes ao seu ofício, até chegar ao prêmio maior: Léa Seydoux, movimentando todas as placas tectônicas dentro de um vestido de seda prateada (ainda no trajeto, Bond dá uma parada luxuosa num parque de diversões chamado Monica Bellucci). Mendes consegue equilibrar, com precisão, o escapismo da série com o cenário político contemporâneo e a visceralidade de Craig. Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig have been a perfect team since the outstanding SKYFALL. SPECTRE begins with a fabulous long take in Mexico City, from where Bond dodges through the inherent risks of the job until the most precious prize: Léa Seydoux moving every tectonic plates inside a silver silk dress (along the way, Bond stops at an amusing park called Monica Bellucci). Mendes succeeds in balancing the escapism of the series with the contemporary political scenario and Craig’s gravitas.  

 

3796 - O MÉTODO KOMINSKY - TEMPORADA 3 (2020)

A cena mais triste...

       O MÉTODO KOMINSKY, TEMPORADA 3 (USA, 2020) – Comovente, sensível, belo, intenso, engraçado, melancólico e, por fim, maravilhoso. Apesar da ausência de Norman (Allan Arkin), tudo converge para uma reconexão de Sandy com um sentimento de completude sugerido desde a primeira temporada. Excelente em todos os aspectos. Touching, sensitive, intense, funny, witty, insightful, cutting at times, fresh, relatable, just wonderful. Despite Norman’s absence, everything converges on Sandy’s reconnection to a feeling of completeness that has been suggested since the first season. Outstanding in Every way. 

 

3795 - GRACE E FRANKIE (TEMPORADA 6, 2020)

GRACE AND FRANKIE (TEMPORADA 6, USA, 2020) – A série perdeu sua força a partir da terceira temporada. Apenas Sam Waterston e Lily Tomlin continuam como a melhor razão para acompanhar os episódios. Foi o que eu fiz. Apenas por eles. O resto do elenco se perdeu com personagens cujos desenvolvimentos cessaram temporadas atrás. The series has lost its strenght since the third season. Only Sam Waterston and Lily Tomlin go on being the main interest to watch the episodes. That’s what I did, just for them. The remaining cast got lost with underdeveloped characters.

 

3794 - ANATOMIA DE UM CRIME (1959)

Lee Remick

 .     ANATOMIA DE UM CRIME (ANATOMY OF A MURDER, USA, 1959) – James Stewart é obrigatório. Neste filme, ele está perfeito como advogado de Ben Gazarra, ao mesmo tempo em que tenta não se deixar seduzir por Lee Remick, tão incrivelmente bela, que poderia ter sido condenada por excesso de sedução. James Stewart is obligatory. In this movie, he is perfect as Ben Gazarra’s lawyer, while he tries to avoid being seduced by Lee Remick, so incredibly beautiful that should have been convicted of excess of seduction. Based on the famous Traver novel, ANATOMY OF A MURDER is an extremely complex film that defeats easy definition. It avoids the labored dramatics and contrived resolutions in which so many movies of the genre indulge, and it also declines to shy away from pointing out the more ill-conceived features of the legal system.

 

3793 - ELVIS, THE SEARCHER (2020)

 ELVIS, THE SEARCHER (USA, 2018) – Ótimo documentário sobre a carreira de Elvis. Apesar dos fatos já conhecidos, é sempre interessante ver como Elvis era realmente uma força da natureza desde o seu início. Quando volta do serviço militar e começa a série de filmes de baixa qualidade em Hollywood, sua carreira esfria. Ao retomar os shows em 1968, ele recria o fascínio em torno da sua figura e começa seus famosos shows em Las Vegas. A very good documentary about the rise and decline of Elvis. Despite the already known facts, it is always fascinating to see how Elvis was a force of nature, since his beginning. When he comes back from the military service and stars several low-budget movies in Hollywood, his career goes adrift. Back to live shows in 1968, he recreates the appeal around him and tours successfully in Las Vegas.

3792 = IN A LONELY PLACE (1950)

 IN A LONELY PLACE (USA, 1950) – Noir clássico com Humphrey Bogart, no papel de um arrogante roteirista de Hollywood, envolvido com uma atriz iniciante e um assassinato, claro. Uma das melhores atuações de Bogart, num filme pouco conhecido. A excepcional fotografia em preto e branco está perfeitamente alinhada com a atmosfera pesada da história. A very adult film about a surly Hollywood writer, a would-be actress, and a murder, of course. Among the very best Bogart performances, yet this film is practically unknown. The film is very pessimistic, which is a part of the film noir tradition and the pessimistic outlook of the movie blends excellently with the stylish black and white cinematography.

3791 - A GUERRA DO AMANHÃ (2020)

 GUERRA DO AMANHÃ (THE TOMORROW WAR, USA, 2020) – Mosaico de vários filmes do gênero. Roteiro pífio e Chris Pratt pouco inspirado. Se quiser assistir, desligue o cérebro e ignore as piadas sem noção, o script ruim e o tom novelesco. Tudo parece ter sido feito por alguma inteligência artificial, sem a inteligência, apesar do elenco qualificado. Uma colagem de vários filmes do gênero, sem qualquer sentido. This movie really wants us to turn our brains off, to not think about it. It wants us to ignore the out of place jokes, incredible coincidences, forced character motivations, soap opera level drama. The script has no soul, like it was written by a damaged android. A senseless collage of many movies.  

3790 - DOLLY PARTON, HERE I AM (2020)

.       DOLLY PARTON, HERE I AM (USA, 2020) – Documentário muito bem feito sobre a carreira de Dolly, com boas imagens de arquivo e entrevistas com seus amigos. A well-made documentary focusing on some of Dolly’s more iconic songs and rolls, and just the persona that is Dolly Parton. Great use of archival footage and interviews from fellow musicians and friends.

3789 - A PROVA (2005)

 A PROVA (PROOF, USA, 2005) – Não deveria rever esse filme, mas revi. Poderia ter evitado o choque nostálgico de ver Gwyneth Paltrow em cena, mas não resisti. Até porque todo crédito do filme deve mesmo cair sobre ela. Sua atuação poderosa e intensa como Catherine, filha de um matemático famoso (Anthony Hopkins), cuja demência pode ter sido passada para ela, é, até hoje, motivo para que meu coração se fragmente numa dízima periódica. I should not have watched this movie again, but I did. I might have avoided seeing Gwyneth Paltrow, but I could not help it. Inasmuch as most of the acclaim should be falling upon her, who gives a powerful full-bodied textured performance as Catherine, who might have inherited her genius at math from her famous father (Anthony Hopkins). Gwyneth’s acting has been the cause for my heart to fragment in a repeating decimal number since I first saw her. 

 

3788 - BOSCH - TEMPORADA 7 (8 EPISÓDIOS)

Tal filha, tal pai...

BOSCH, TEMPORADA 7, 8 EPISÓDIOS - (BOSCH, 2020) – Apesar da temporada curtinha, BOSCH chega ao fim com a mesma qualidade. Titus Welliver e todo o elenco estão em total consonância com seus personagens. Além disso, Los Angeles salta aos olhos com a vastidão plana de suas ruas, e a casa de Bosch é certamente o local mais espetacular da cidade dos anjos. Vamos esperar, ansiosos, pelo spin-off da série. Despite the short season, BOSCH keeps the high standards. Besides, Los Angeles’ plain vastness is eye-catching, and Bosch’s home is the coolest place in the City of Angels. Looking forward to seeing the spin-off. Prime.  

 

3787 - TERCEIRA PESSOA (2013)

TERCEIRA PESSOA (THIRD PERSON, 2013) – Esse é um filme para escritores. Ele também explora a traição da confiança em seus vários aspectos. Paul Haggis sempre fez filmes com histórias interligadas, e TP é exatamente isso: Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Adrien Brody, Mila Kunis e James Franco são parte desta construção melodramática (sem nenhuma conotação negativa) sobre relacionamentos numa sociedade cuja natureza ainda não foi inteiramente compreendida.  Third Person seeks to explore the betrayal of trust—the betrayal of fidelity and friendship. Paul Haggis, the director, has made a career out of making films that interweave numerous story lines. In this case, Liam Neeson, Olivia Wilde, Adrien Brody, Mila Kunis, and James Franco all comprise a wonderful ensemble that demands a range of powerful emotions to drive this story through its incessant melodrama (no negative connotation applied). The narrative here focuses on the romantic relationships and affairs that still rule society and humanity's untamable nature.

 

3786 - AMANTES (2005)

AMANTES (TWO LOVERS, USA, 2005) – Sim, confesso: Gwyneth Paltrow está neste filme. Sim, temos Joaquin Phoenix também, mas é ela a razão maior, por motivos inevitáveis, mas que deveriam ser evitados a todo custo. Ele é Leonard, sentimentalmente dividido entre Sandra (Vanessa Shaw) e Michelle (Gwyneth). Mas o filme vai além disso: é também sobre pessoas tomadas pelos sentimentos e por suas carências, geralmente grandes obstáculos para as melhores decisões. Yes, I confess: Gwyneth Paltrow is in the movie. Yes, Joaquin Phoenix is there, but she is the major reason for inevitable reasons – the same that should be avoided at any cost. He is Leonard, emotionally divided between Sandra (Vanessa Shaw) and Michelle (Gwyneth). However, the movie goes a little bit farther: it is also about people taken by their feelings and needs, generally great obstacles to the best decisions.

1.       A FRATERNIDADE É VERMELHA (TROIS COLEURS, ROUGE, França, 1994) – Irene Jacob é obrigatória. O filme, o terceiro da trilogia de Kieslowski, nos dá um sentido de culminância como nunca se viu na história do cinema. E mais: ele nos dá esperança, num mundo repleto de caminhos desencontrados. Como muitos dos trabalhos do diretor, o filme é sobre o acaso e a coincidência. Seus personagens se desenvolvem e interagem organicamente, entrelaçando-se num roteiro rico em deixas emocionais em vez de palavras. Raramente um filme fundiu de modo tão brilhante tantas ideias, imagens e emoções – um compêndio sobre a vida e a arte, numa história inesquecível. With Red, there is a real sense of culmination unlike any other. Wistful, melancholy, yet life-affirming, the film offers hope in world full of supposed mistaken paths. RED is so devoid of a linear, defined plot that anything could happen to any of these people and the possibilities that this story could have veered off in so many directions had one crucial element not taken place at the exact moment and place. The characters evolve organically, crossing paths in a script fraught with emotional clues instead of words. Rarely has a movie combined so brightly ideas, images and emotions – a compilation about life and arts in an unforgettable story.
