Denzel / Malcolm |
There has never been an
ideal selection of an actor playing a larger-than-life figure as Denzel
Washington assuming the Malcolm X role as easily as a man putting on a shirt.
After seeing the early years of this controversial black activist done in
wonderful artistic touches, Spike Lee changes gear and stays the course with
such great accuracy to historical detail I felt I was transported back in time
in complete lockstep with this great individual, especially after having read
Malcolm’s biography by Manning Marable. To the end, Lee shows such reverence to
detail that Denzel elevates Malcolm the man almost to that of a prophet.
However, Lee avoids the mistake of glorifying an imperfect man in his script
that goes to the private, personal confines so often that we can see a great
man with great dignity and humility. Director Spike Lee took some artistic
licenses (I heard this in one of the special features), but thanks to that, I
learned of other political visionaries and did some research, the aim being
getting the gist of their political thinking and of significant events in
trying to make their vision a reality.
