MALENA (Italy, USA, 2001) – Um garoto de 12 anos, numa cidadezinha no litoral da Sicília, em 1940, se vê tomado de encantamento por Monica Bellucci, ou melhor, Malena, uma suposta viúva que catalisa todos os olhares e desejos do vilarejo. O filme de Giuseppe Tornatore vai além da convencional história “coming-of-age”, até um pouco banalizada cinema, para dar um mergulho numa questão interessante: como a beleza de uma mulher pode ser capaz de estremecer (no mal sentido, tá?) os valores e o comportamento de uma sociedade que tenta se reconstruir depois do horror da guerra. Malena viúva já seria um problema. Mas ela também é sensual, misteriosa e tem uma fidelidade inabalável ao marido, compondo um personagem ao mesmo tempo vulnerável e poderoso. O filme retrata a hipocrisia dos detestáveis “cidadãos de bem” e a incontida selvageria das mulheres que não sabem lidar com a própria limitação estética, diante do poder silente e devastador de Monica Belluci, sendo apenas bela sob o sol inclemente da Sicília. O roteiro também aborda a perda da inocência e como esse processo pode transformar um garoto cheio de sonhos e fantasias num adulto precoce e incapaz de esconder a amargura de ter deixado tanta beleza para trás. Giuseppe Tornatore's film goes beyond the conventional "coming-of-age" story, so trivialized in movies, to dive into an interesting question: how a woman's beauty can be able to shake (in the bad sense, okay?) the values and behavior of a society that tries to rebuild itself after the horror of war. Malena, being just a widow, would already be a problem. But she is also sensual, mysterious and has an unwavering fidelity to her husband, composing a character that is both vulnerable and powerful. The film portrays the hypocrisy of the detestable "good citizens" and the unrestrained savagery of women who do not know how to deal with their own aesthetic limitations, in the face of the silent and devastating power of Monica Belluci, being just beautiful under the inclement sun of Sicily. The script also addresses the loss of innocence and how this process can transform a boy full of dreams and fantasies into a precocious adult, unable to hide the bitterness of having left so much beauty behind.
