John Sugar (Ferrell), um P.I. misterioso em Los Angeles, aceita investigar o desaparecimento da neta de um rico produtor de Hollywood. SUGAR é a celebração do filme noir, no berço do cinema, além de homenagear as histórias detetivescas, à ficção policial e a literatura hard-boiled. Sugar é um grande fã do cinema noir, e os episódios são entrecortados com cenas de produções clássicas do gênero, sempre estabelecendo uma conexão com a narrativa. Todavia, essas inserções não são sempre orgânicas, mas é sempre muito agradável ver snippets com Edward G. Robinson, Humphrey Bogart, Barbara Stanwyck e Robert Mitchum. Estilisticamente, os diretores da série exploram muito competentemente ângulos inclinados, close-ups intensos, além de mostrar LA no seu esplendor mais glamuroso. O mistério que envolve Sugar pode ser meio frustrante para algumas pessoas, mas tem potencial para um outro arco dramático na segunda temporada.
