Widow's Bay is one of those series that seem to point to contradictory paths in principle, but they work precisely because of this contradiction. There is an attempt to combine supernatural horror, eccentric humor, mystery and drama, which results in a narrative in which laughter and discomfort coexist almost in the same scene. There is also a humor very close to the universe of authors like Stephen King or David Lynch's series, in which a small community lives with extraordinary events as if they were just another everyday problem. Matthew Rhys' work is fundamental to this proposal. His Tom Loftis acts as a kind of realistic anchor (not always, it's true) for an increasingly delusional universe. If he embarked on a comic exaggeration, the series would run the risk of becoming satire; if it adopted an excessively dramatic register, the humor would lose strength. From the perspective of the mixture of genres, Widow's Bay stands out for transforming the tension between horror and humor into its main dramatic drive. Fear arises from a rich and unsettling mythology, and the comedy is born from the way the characters live with it in an organic and, often, passive way. In this context, Rhys plays an essential role: his performance works as a bridge between the two registers, allowing the series to be scary without losing its lightness, and funny, without abandoning the constant feeling of a supernatural danger about to happen. It is precisely this ability to inhabit two tones at the same time that makes Widow's Bay one of the most unique television experiences in contemporary horror. Apple TV.
