Segunda Guerra.
No Prime. What Winston Churchill did in
the end of WW2 is an example of how a single man can make all the difference –
this time, in a positive way. Likewise, Gary Oldman is also the element that
puts the Joe Wright’s movie on the pantheon of the good movies about the WW2. The
luxuriant style of the director Joe Wright gives the movie the true dimension of
the great political leaders. Of course, Lily James is there, which improves everything.
Prime.
The season starts with Bosch infiltrated in a group of
junkies headed to a lost place in the desert. Some episodes ahead, we understand
that this mission has to do with the murder of a pharmacy owner whose son is
involved with drugs. Bosch is getting more anguished and Maddie, his daughter, is
more boring. Lance Reddick’s character is gradually turning into a robot. Prime.
1.MEIA-NOITE EM PARIS
(MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, USA, 2011) –
One of Woody Allen’s gems, with a writer (Owen Wilson)
getting together with last century great artists after midnight, in Paris. Besides,
the director indulges himself in putting in scene two actresses who can be considered
modern paintings of what we might call dreams, Rachel McAdams and Marion Cotillard.
Attention to Adrien Brody as Salvador Dali.
1.WASP, REDE DE ESPIÕES (WASP
NETWORK, França, Brazil, Espanha, 2019) -Wasp Network is adapted from The
Last Soldiers of the Cold War: The Story of the Cuban Five, by Fernando Morais, and cleaves a little too closely to its
factual source material. It is an ambitious and busily journalistic affair,
meticulously researched and moving quickly to cover all the ground as
intertitles rush to inform us that it is now “four years earlier” or that we
are at the “Copacabana hotel”. The film is glossy, illuminating and frequently
exciting. What it lacks is an emotional charge and a fine-grained texture. We
need to invest in these people in order to understand their decisions – and
care about the consequences of these.WagnerMoura is not convincing
in the role. Ana de Armas (the only Cuban in the cast) makes beauty and talent
go together. Leonardo Sbaraglia has nothing to do in the story, unfortunately,
for he is one of the best actors in Argentina. Netflix.
1.SOBIBOR – A REVOLTA
No Prime. As
expected, the movie is depressing and gloomy, but exceptionally photographed. It
is based on the real-life events that took place in 1943 German Occupied Poland.
Do not miss the final sequence. Terribly moving and still hard to
believe that this was allowed to happen, and not that long ago either. Not a
film you'd want to watch for enjoyment but should be shown in every school as
mandatory.Prime.
1.BRAVURA INDÔMITA (TRUE GRIT, USA,
2010) – A refilmagem
western sensacional. Netflix. The remake of John Wayne’s 1969
version is outstanding – Jeff Bridges is perfect as the hunter of a retarded killer
(Josh Brolin), along with Matt Damon, but it is Hailee Steinfeld who steals
every scene of this wonderful western. Netflix.
1.FLORES DO ORIENTE (FLOWERS OF WAR,
No Prime. During
WWII, an American (Christian Bale), pretending to be a priest, tries to save two
different groups: teenager students and prostitutes from a nearby brothel, all
housed in a church in Nanjing. It is a tragedy inside another tragedy told by Zhang
Yimou (HERO), with his usual visual skills. Narratives about wars, always difficult
and traumatic, are essential lessons to understand the man these conflicts make
even less human. Prime.
A narrativa
No elenco,
Diane Lane é Paulette Goddard, e Marisa Tomei Mabel Normand, atriz e diretora –
Robert Downey
Jr really rocks as Chaplin (his Oscar Nomination was more than fair), in Richard
Attenborough flick based on her father’s biography – she plays Chaplin’s mother
in the story. The narrative is in flashbacks, with an elderly Chaplin in
Switzerland, talking to George Hayden (Anthony Hopkins), the only fictitious character
in the movie. Diane Lane is Paulette Goddard and Marisa Tomei is Mabel Normand,
actress and director – suffice to say that both of them are on my cinema
pantheon. Chaplin was chased by J. Edgar Hoover, accused of Communism, and expelled
from America. Of course, Hoover projected his sexual traumas on Chaplin’s
womanizing and paternity charges, which speaks volumes about his character and
false moralism.
A Itália é o cenário
Netflix. Overflowed with romanticism,
Norman Jewison’s movie goes beyond the plain romantic comedy. So, turn of
reason (we always do that when we are in love, don’t we?) for two hours and see
Marisa Tomei (Faith), intolerably gorgeous, going to Italy to find the man she
believes to be the one, just knowing his name. Then, comes Robert Downey Jr,
whose character, Peter Wright (right?) falls in love with her at first sight –
and, let’s be frank, who wouldn’t? Italy is the perfect scenario for this symbolic
search for love, mainly when it is crossed with by the lesson taught by true
friendships: freedom, always, in all senses. A must see. Netflix.
ELA (HER, USA, 2013)– Este é um filme perfeito. Theodore (Joaquin
This is a perfect movie. Theodore (Joaquin
Phoenix) is a lonely man in a technological world fraught with retro elements,
who falls in love with the voice of the OS of his PC. Nevertheless, it is not
any voice: it is Scarlett’s, more present and mesmerizing than ever. Spike Jonze
makes us think of Einstein’s words about the risks of science dehumanization: “It
has become appalling obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity”. On
the other hand, he reminds us of Arthur C. Clarke: “Any sufficiently advanced
technology is indistinguishable from magic”. The always-intricate loving
process is displayed in a subtle and sensitive manner when it shows love
possibilities independent of physical presence, but still trespassed the phantom
of abandon and of the illusory possession trap. It is a perfect movie – because
of the original story and, above all, because of Scarlett and her impressing capacity
for being present in the most absolute absence.
In this fourth episode, Conde faces a case of a government clerk who shows
up dead on the seashore, whose life is linked to illegal artwork trade. The production
keeps up the high level and, best of all, Laura Ramos is back to the story,
armed with an Armed Forces killing smile. One of the highlights of the movie is
Claudia Monteagudo. She is something.
As belas
Third edition
of the series with Jorge Perugorria as the detective Mário Conde, from Leonardo
Padura’s characters. Here he investigates the death of a travesty, son of an
important Cuban diplomat. The beautiful locations in Havana and Laura Ramos,
even more beautiful, keep the interest in the show. Netflix.
AS MÃES DO TERCEIRO REICH (AGAINST THEIR WILL, França, 2012)– O título em português é inexato e apelativo
do reich.
The title
in Portuguese is not accurate for the two French teenagers’ account of their “recruitment”
by the Nazi to work for the war and, eventually, to be surrogate mothers for
the Reich eugenic project. It is a TV drama production more worried with the soap
opera style than historical accuracy. Attention to Flore Bonaventura, as one of
the young women. Prime.
HBO. The 2012 Best Movie Award is quite
understandable. The Americans are the heroes in the rescue of six people from
the American embassy in Iran, in 1979, acting under the cover of a Hollywood
team scouting a location for a science fiction film. Affleck is the leading
actor (?), but he does not destroy the movie, which is just correct. Contrary to
the story in the movie, Affleck directs the flick in an unimaginative and undaring
way. The great John Goodman and Alan Arkin are in teh cast. HBO.
BOSCH – TEMPORADA 4 (BOSCH –
SEASON 4, USA, 2018) – Esta quarta
As atuações
Prime. This fourth season starts with the murder of a
lawyer and it is still outstanding. The cast performances are solid and the
characters more developed than ever. Maddie is closer to Bosch, after a tragic fact
makes her face the harder side of life. Prime.
O ESTRANHO (THE STRANGER, USA, 1946) – Noir brilhante
TC Cult. Bright noir (yes, the paradox is intended) about a not
so commonly explored theme in the American cinematography: the Nazi hunting
after WW2. Orson Wells (who also directs) is one of these infamous criminals
who now live a common life in a small American town and is about to marry a judge’s
daughter (Loretta Young, not so young), but is spotted by a detective (Edward G.
Robinson, wonderfully cynical, almost blasé). Wells is not fitted for the role,
no matter how matter he tries to inject dignity to the character. Besides, this
is his least favorite movie. All in all, Robinson steals the movie. TC Cult.
A QUEDA (DER UNTERGANG, Alemanha, Áustria,
Who better to make a WW2 film than the Germans themselves. Bruno Ganz (Damiel, in WINGS OF DESIRE) is simply perfect as Hitler in his final days, hidden in the bunker underneath the Reichstag. The storyline follows the secretrary Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara, whose incredible beauty seems to explode at any moment) and her work with Hitler, while witnessing the fall of Nazi hard core. The facts from Hitler’s bio, by Ian Hersahw, are depicted here. This film comes out on top, perhaps the finest ever made on the subject of the war (though the Belorussian "Come and See" & "Schindler's List" are darn close as well). The movie is neither pro-Nazi nor does it depict all Nazis as mindless monsters. It gives an impression of utter realism. A film that allows us to watch the disintegration of the largest empire in modern history, from the inside out. Beginning after the start of the siege of Berlin, the bulk of the film takes place in the cramped bunkers below the city, where Hitler and his officers are trapped like rats on a sinking ship, aware of their fate, but not smart enough, not willing enough, or maybe incapable of escaping the fates they created for themselves.
