GLADIADOR 2 (GLADIATOR II, USA, 2024) – É impossível não comparar G2 com o filme de 1999, também de Ridley Scott, e talvez isso seja mesmo a intenção do diretor, mas acaba sendo um obstáculo para a fruição normal desta quase não sequência. O problema é a presença maiúscula de Russell Crowe, como Maximus, naquele filme. Inspirado, Crowe é um dos maiores atores do cinema, desde que não esteja nesta fase preguiçosa presente há tanto tempo na sua carreira. Aqui, Paul Mescal, outro ator excepcional, parece estar mal escalado, apesar da adição de músculos e de uma postura de vingança muito distantes de sua forma suave e intimista de atuar (veja o maravilhoso AFTERSUN e comprove isso), apostando mais na sua fisicalidade e menos na suposta liderança do seu personagem. O roteiro opta por uma reciclagem do filme original, caindo numa solução dramática previsível, envolvendo relações familiares mal resolvidas, retaliação pela morte da esposa (bem ao estilo DESEJO DE MATAR, com Bronson) e um CGI usado de forma não orgânica e forçada em algumas cenas. Denzel Washington faz de seu Macrinus um elemento disruptivo num cenário pouco original, mas a história o leva para um castigo maniqueísta e sem graça. O general Acacius (Pedro Pascal, sempre muito bom) é o personagem mais parecido com Maximus e, junto com Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), fazem de G2 um espetáculo assistível, apesar da sequência ao estilo Sharkado. It's impossible not to compare G2 with the 1999 film, also by Ridley Scott, and maybe that's really the director's intention, but it ends up being an obstacle to the normal enjoyment of this almost non-sequel. The problem is the capital presence of Russell Crowe, as Maximus, in that film. Inspired, Crowe is one of the greatest actors in cinema, as long as he is not in this lazy phase present for so long in his career. Here, Paul Mescal, another exceptional actor, seems to be poorly cast, despite the addition of muscles and a posture of revenge very far from his smooth and intimate way of acting (see the wonderful AFTERSUN and see for yourself), betting more on his physicality and less on the supposed leadership of his character. The script opts for a recycling of the original film, falling into a predictable dramatic solution, involving unresolved family relationships, retaliation for the death of his wife (very much in the style of DEATH WISH, with Bronson) and a CGI used in a non-organic and forced way in some scenes. Denzel Washington makes his Macrinus a disruptive element in an unoriginal setting, but the story takes him to a Manichean and dull punishment. General Acacius (Pedro Pascal, always very good) is the character most similar to Maximus and, together with Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), make G2 a watchable spectacle, despite the Sharkado-style sequence.
