3781 - SOMBRAS DA NOITE (2012)

Eva Green, perfeita

1.    SOMBRAS DA NOITE (DARK SHADOWS, USA, 2012) – Este filme de Tim Burton faz algo muito raro: ele fascina você, na medida em que entrega exatamente o que se espera do diretor, nem mais nem menos, tudo bem fundamentado num ambiente gótico e ótimo CGI. Johnny Depp, em mais um personagem esquisitão, está perfeito. Além de tudo, há Eva Green, cuja presença é uma ótima razão para viver centenas de anos. This film from Tim Burton does something that is rarer than you might think. It whelms you in the sense that it delivers precisely the satisfaction a sympathetic audience could expect from its director, not one degree above or below, bringing to the audience the Goth style enhanced by good CGI. Johnny Depp, playing another weird character, is perfect on the role. Moreover, there is Eva Green, and her presence is a very good reason to live hundreds of years.  

 

3780 - THEM (2020)

 

 THEM (USA, 2020) - Amazon Prime’s new horror anthology series THEM opens with a gloriously nightmarish, sepia-toned prologue. A woman and her baby are alone in an isolated house when an apparently innocuous old woman walks down the road towards them. She mentions that “we” saw the woman’s husband leave and begins singing about “Old Black Joe”. When she hears the baby, she brightens and asks “Can I have him? Your boy? I’d like him very, very much.” This is a series that goes there, at full-speed, using a Black family’s suburban hell in the 1950s as a reflection of all that came before and after it. It’s more effectively horrific than it is horror, and easier to accept as loving exploitation than ruthless high-art. Prime. 

 

3779 - ROMA, CIDADE ABERTA (1945)

O olhar de Ana Mangni diz tudo

ROMA, CIDADE ABERTA (ROMA, CITTA APERTA, Itália, 1945) – Este filme de Roberto Rosselini mostra a ocupação de Roma pelos nazistas, num estilo de documentário, dando início ao Neorrealismo cinematográfico italiano. Imperdível. Emocionante. This was Roberto Rossellini’s revelation, a harrowing drama about the Nazi occupation of Rome and the brave few who struggled against it. Though told with more melodramatic flair than the films that would follow it to form The War Trilogy. Open City, Italian Neorealist film, released in 1945, portraying life in Nazi-occupied Rome during World War II. Directed by Roberto Rossellini in a documentary style that was innovative for the time, the movie brought international attention to the Neo-realist movement and became one of its defining works, influencing numerous later filmmakers.

 

 

3778 - A TENTAÇÃO (2011)

A TENTAÇÃO (THE LEDGE, USA, 2011) - Written and directed by Matthew Chapman, “The Ledge” attempts to fashion itself as a philosophical meditation posing as a thriller. Hotel manager Gavin (Charlie Hunnam) has fallen for Shana (Liv Tyler), who works as a chambermaid while being married to Joe (Patrick Wilson), whose strict religious fundamentalism has apparently straightened out her life. The movie raises some interesting issues about atheism and religious fanatics. 

 

3777 - ARIZONA NUNCA MAIS (1987)

 .       ARIZONA NUNCA MAIS (RAISING ARIZONA, USA, 1987) - Contado num estilo de Looney Tunes, o filme aborda o desejo americano de ter uma família ideal. Nicolas Cage é o herói contemplativo: um ex-detento, cujo sonho se materializa no casamento com a policial Edwina (Holly Hunter). Juntos, eles caem na estrada, atrás do sonho de ter um filho. Este Segundo filme dos irmãos Cohen é um mergulho num precipício, com seu ritmo alucinante e suas cenas de desenho animado. Totalmente encantador. Told in a kind of Looney Tunes style, Raising Arizona is a film that questions the desire to achieve the ideal American family. The contemplative hero, Nicolas Cage, hopes to escape his orbit between jail and freedom when he resolves to marry Holly Hunter’s police officer named Edwina, a partner seemingly capable of making him drop anchor. Together, they are hit the road for making their desire to have a child come true. For their second endeavor into filmmaking, the Cohens sought to create something that looks like breakneck speed. The movie is marked by a bright, hilarious living cartoon-like sequences, shot in a series of pensive dreams, elaborate chases, and the energy of an animated short. Entirely charming. 

 

3776 - A PRIMEIRA NOITE DE UM HOMEM (1967)

A PRIMEIRA NOITE DE UM HOMEM (THE GRADUATE, USA, 1967) - One of the most beloved American films of all time, The Graduate earned Mike Nichols a best director Oscar, brought the music of Simon & Garfunkel to a wider audience, and introduced the world to a young actor named Dustin Hoffman. Visually imaginative and impeccably acted, with a clever, endlessly quotable script by Buck Henry (based on the novel by Charles Webb), The Graduate had the kind of cultural impact that comes along only once in a generation. The final sequence with Hoffman and Katherine Ross, both on a bus, is one of the most remarkable in the film history, simple as it is. 

 

3775 - 007 SKYFALL (2012)

 007 SKYFALL (SKYFALL, USA, UK, Turquia, 2012) – Sam Mendes, de fato, entende essência dos filmes de James Bond. Sua sensibilidade é a ferramenta explorada ao máximo por ele. O resultado é um filme único, repleto do charme e do carisma tradicionais entrelaçados num estilo urbano, moderno e instantaneamente acessível, resultando num dos melhores filmes da série. Daniel Craig mostra que é o melhor James Bond de todos, devido a sua hierática postura como o melhor agente da MI6, o que dá ao filme a roupagem certa de ação e traz doses muito benvindas de humor, extravagâncias e sensualidades, ausentes nas últimas edições. Javier Barden está sensacional como o vilão responsável pelos melhores momentos da franquia em anos. Sam Mendes really understands the gist of James Bond movies. His sensitivity is the tool he explored to the fullest. The result is the uniquely named 'Skyfall' a Bond film so full of the vintage charm and charisma yet fashioned in modern, urban and instantly accessible style that it ends up being one of the finest films of the franchise. Daniel Craig proves to be the best Bond ever, especially due to his gravitas as the best agent in the MI6 agency, which gives the movie the right action dressing, and brings in welcome dollops of humor, luxury and sensuality that went missing from the franchise with the last outings. Javier Barden is outstanding as the villain in charge of the best moments of the series in years.  

3774 - A CHAVE DE SARAH (2010)

  A CHAVE DE SARAH (ELLES’APPELAIT SARAH, França, 2010) – Kristin Scott Thomas é uma atriz obrigatória: linda, talentosa e com os olhos tristes mais encantadores de toda a galáxia. Ela é uma das raras atrizes com completo domínio de cena, com a qual nos identificamos logo no primeiro fotograma. No filme, quando começa a descobrir os fatos do passado, passando por vários graus de envolvimento e indiferença, ela se transforma na sua dimensão existencial. Daí o cerne da história: a natureza do pertencimento ao nosso próprio tempo. Tudo que orbita o tema – a chave da menina judia – se reveste de um horror quase sensacionalista, o que não compromete o restante de um filme cuidadosamente estruturado, quando o analisamos com atenção.  Kristin Scott Thomas is an obligatory actress: gorgeous, talented, and with the galaxy’s saddest and mesmerizing eyes. She is one of those rare actresses who can command the screen with quiet brooding. She's convincing in a way that we identify with, and our sympathies are with her from the start. In the movie, as she uncovers the past facts and faces varying degrees of concern and indifference, she herself undergoes an existential transformation. This, by the end, is really what the story is about: the pertinence for our own times. The specific events around the title idea, the young Jewish girl's key, are horrifying to the point of being slightly sensationalist, which does not compromise the rest of such a studied and careful movie when you take it in stride. 3773 - SR. E SRA.SMITH (2005)

 SR. E SRA. SMITH (MR. AND MRS. SMITH, USA, 2005) – Algumas vezes, bastam duas pessoas em cena. O roteiro fica em segundo plano. O que importa é a “química”, um termo científico que, atualmente, se refere à complementaridade estabelecida entre dois astros em cena. É o que acontece com Angelina Jolie e Brad Pitt, e por isso o filme funciona. Se fosse de outro modo, a história cairia no precipício do script sem sentido, e nada o salvaria. Angelina e Pitt dão conta do recado. São tão belos, que tudo acaba funcionando, e o diretor Dough Liman aproveita totalmente o que tem nas mãos. Sometimes, it is enough to have two people together on the screen. The plot is immaterial and somewhat irrelevant. What matters is the "chemistry," a term that once referred to a science but now has also to do with the heat we sense, or think we sense, between two movie stars. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have it, undoubtedly, and because they do, the movie works. Otherwise, had the movie not worked, it would have fallen into oblivion, and nothing would have saved it. Angelina e Pitt have the job done. Beautiful as they are, everything falls naturally into place – this is a tool the director Dough Liman explored to the fullest. 

 

3772 - TROPA DE ELITE (2007)

TROPA DE ELITE (BRASIL, 2007) – Freneticamente filmado, TROPA DE ELITE é ainda um filme intenso, mostrando as questões intestinas da polícia do Rio de Janeiro. Wagner Moura, como Capitão Nascimento, tem um papel central ao descortinar o ódio do sistema responsável pela brutal, porém necessária (?), formação do BOPE. O filme também é sobre a característica fascista da polícia numa sociedade crescentemente sem lei. Franticly shot (pun intended, ok?), ELITE SQUAD is still a poignant movie, showing the insides of the Police Department in Rio de Janeiro. Wagner Moura, as Captain Nascimento, has a pivotal role, displaying the rage pervading the so-called system responsible for the brutal abet necessary (?) formation of BOPE (Special Police Operation Battalion). The movie tackles the depiction of police as a fascist element amongst a growing lawless society. 

 

3771 - ATA- ME! (1989)

ATA-ME (ATAME!, Espanha, 1989) – Este é um dos filmes mais famosos de Pedro Almodóvar e traz Antonio Banderas num papel caracterizado por inocência e simplicidade, aspectos que, em Hollywood hoje, infelizmente, parecem ter um tratamento superficial no desenvolvimento dos personagens: Marina (Victoria Abril) é uma atriz pornô sequestrada por Ricky (Banderas), um rapaz que acabou de sair do hospício - Almodóvar não poderia ter encontrado uma metáfora mais realista para o amor. This is one of Pedro Almodóvar’s most famous movies and has Antonio Banderas portraying innocence and simplicity of character very hard to find nowadays. Unfortunately, Hollywood seems to gloss over any sort of character development that follows this direction. Marina Osorio (Victoria Abril) is a soft-porno star kidnapped by Ricky (Banderas), young lad who has just left a mental institution - Almodóvar couldn’t have found a better metaphor for love. 

 

3770 - O LOBISOMEM (1941)

Chaney e Evelyn Ankers, que não se suportavam em cena

O LOBISOMEN (THE WOLF MAN, USA, 1941) – Esta segunda (e talvez a mais famosa) versão da Universal para a lenda do lobisomem mostrou as pernas peludas da criatura, sem qualquer pejo, lançando o segundo ciclo do horror no cinema e estabelecendo um novo personagem icônico na galeria que já contava com Frankenstein e Drácula. Lon Chaney Jr. incorpora o páthos do personagem intensamente, e é exatamente isso o que o estereotipa para sempre. Quem realmente rouba a cena é Maria Ouspenskaya, intérprete da cigana Maleva. Ela está sensacional e sua atuação, depois da de Chaney, é memorável. Universal’s second version of the werewolf legend proved to have legs, hairy though they were. The movie launched the studio’s second horror cycle and established a new iconic character of the gallery with Frankenstein and Dracula. Lon Chaney Jr. embodies the character’s pathos, and this is what permanently stereotyped him. The real scene-stealer in 'The Wolf Man' is Maria Ouspenskaya, who plays the gypsy woman Maleva. She's just terrific and gives the most memorable performance after Chaney.

 

3769 - O CAPITÃO (2017)

O CAPITÃO (DER HAUPTMANN, Alemanha, França, 2017) – Se você quiser testar o caráter de um homem, dê-lhe poder: esta poderia ser a premissa básica deste filme, no qual um soldado desertor, na WW2, acaba encontrando uma mala com um uniforme de um oficial nazist e assume sua identidade num campo de concentração, onde promove um massacre de prisioneiros. Filmado em um preto e branco impactante, O CAPITÃO é uma mistura de docudrama e humor negro, desmascarando a questão da natureza do poder nas relações humanas e a exploração advinda do caos – o paradoxo de algumas cenas mostram a guerra em seus aspectos mais crus. If you want to test a man’s character, give him power: this could be the basic premise of this movie in which a soldier, allegedly to have deserted his military duty, stumbles on a abandoned suitcase neatly packed with a German captain’s coat and full Nazi uniform. After that, impersonating a German officer, he promotes a horrific massacre of prisoners in a concentration camp. Filmed in stark black and white, THE CAPTAIN is a blend of docudrama and black comedy that unmasks the issue of nature of power relations and the exploitation that thrives from this chaos. The paradox of some scenes made this war filme unflinchingly raw. Prime. 

3768 - GRACE AND FRANKIE - TEMPORADA 6 (2020)

GRACE E FRANKIE – TEMP.6 – (USA, 2020) – Apesar do anúncio da sétima temporada, G&F foi se perdendo com o passar do tempo, e essa sexta temporada é uma das mais fracas da série. Lily Tomlin e Sam Waterston continuam como destaque. Jane Fonda parece, em muitos momentos, meio indiferente – de fato, os roteiros não favoreceram sua Grace. O casamento com Nick (Peter Gallagher, que achou o tom certo do personagem) a deixou um pouco à margem de uma história repleta de inconsistências. Despite the 7th season in the pipeline, G&F got lost as time went by, and this 6^th season is one of the weakest in the series. Lily Tomlin and Sam Waterston go on as highlights. Jane Fonda seems a little bit aloof – to tell the truth, the scripts did not favor her in any aspect. The wedding to Nick (Peter Gallagher, who found the right tone for his character) left her without much to do in a story fraught with inconsistencies. 

 

3767 - INVENCÍVEL (2014)

  INVENCÍVEL (UNBROKEN, USA, 2014) – Nessa fase em que Angelina Jolie anda ocupando meu interesse, ela reaparece, aqui, como diretora deste drama de guerra, baseado em fatos reais: Louis Zamperini (Jack O’Connell, com atuação impressionante), tenente da USAF, cai com seu B-24 no Pacífico, em 1943, e assim começa sua história: 47 dias à deriva e dois anos infernais como prisioneiro dos japoneses. Angelina enfatiza, um pouco além da conta, a relação doentia do captor e seu capturado, o que deixa o filme meio capenga, com uma tendência desnecessária à equiparação do sofrimento à santidade. Tecnicamente, INVENCÍVEL é muito bom. Netflix. During this period, in which Angelina Jolie entirely draws my attention, she is back, here, as the director of this war drama, based on true facts: Louis Zamperini (Jack O’Donnell, with an impressive performance), USAF lieutenant, crashes into the Pacific, in 1943, and thus his story begins: 47 days adrift and two hellish years at the hands of the Japanese. Angelina focuses, excessively, on the pathological relationship between the captor and the captured, which makes the movie limp. Moreover, she insists on an unnecessary match of suffering with sanctity. Technically, UNBROKEN is outstanding. 

 

3766 - OS QUATRO PARALAMAS (2020)

OS QUATRO PARALAMAS (BRASIL, 2020) – Documentário sensacional sobre a banda, com excelentes imagens do início da carreira e entrevistas com Herbert, João e Bi, três dos mais legais personagens do rock nacional. Além da ótima música, é uma prova que a amizade é o sentimento mais importante numa trajetória tão bela quanto representativa de uma época em que a música brasileira era muito mais do que o atual miasma de funks e sertanejos. Netflix. Outstanding documentary about the band, with excellent images of the beginning and interviews with Herbert, João and Bi, three of the nicest characters of Brazilian rock. Besides the great music, it stands as a homage to friendship as the most important bond in a trajectory as beautiful as representative of a time in which the Brazilian musical scenario was much more than the current miasma of funks and country music.   

 

3765 - O TURISTA (2010)

O TURISTA (THE TOURIST, 2010) – Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (dos maravilhosos A VIDA DOS OUTROS  e NEVER LOOK AWAY) sumiu neste filme supostamente dirigido por ele – as presenças catalisadoras de Angelina Jolie e Johnny Depp parecem ter impedido qualquer tentativa de autoria do diretor alemão. Essa comédia de espiões, bem ao estilo de Cary Grant, gira em torno dos astros principais, quase como uma exercício de autoegolatria. O resultado é um filme morno, como as atuações de Jolie e Depp. As locações em Veneza são belíssimas. Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (responsible for the outstanding THE LIFE OF OTHERS and NEVER LOOK AWAY)  simple disappeared from this movie allegedely directed by him – the dynamism of the leading actors seems to have prevent any atempt of the German director. The movie is a classic spy comedy, Cary Grant-esque, that is only about the two stars, in a almost exercise of egotism. The result is a soft flick, as Jolie and Depp’s performances.  

 

3764 - O CONTADOR DE AUSCHWITZ (2018)

O CONTADOR DE AUSCHWITZ (ACCOUNTANT OF AUSCHWITZ, Canadá, 2018) - Seventy years after WWII, Oskar Gröning, one of the last surviving members of the SS, goes on trial as an accessory to the murder of 300,000 people at the Auschwitz concentration camp. The documentary has all the elements of a great project including solid footage - some going back to the Holocaust itself, clever title devices that summarize history as they juxtapose the footage, and the inclusion of all sides of the debate. The debate, of course, is whether Grönig should be on trial due to his advanced age plus his past efforts to fight against the denial of the Holocaust in the 1990s. Netflix.

3763 - O CONVIDADO (2018)

Dav Patel, sempre ótimo

.       O CONVIDADO (THE WEDDING GUEST, UK, 2018) – O ótimo Dev Patel (do emocionante LION) aparece aqui num papel incomum na sua carreira – um homem misterioso que, às vésperas de um casamento no Paquistão, sequestra a noiva, numa ação cujos resultados acabam sendo inesperados. A partir daí, desenvolve-se uma previsível síndrome de Estocolmo, mas repleta de delicadezas e descobertas mútuas. Belas cenas na Índia e um desfecho capaz de nos fazer repensar no significado do tradicional “final feliz”. The great Dav Patel (from the poignant LION) plays an unexpected role here – a mysterious man who kidnaps the bride-to-be on the eve of her wedding, in Pakistan. But the action has unforeseen results and, from this point on, comes a predicable and some-wise delicate Stockholm Syndrome, fraught with mutual discoveries. Beautiful Indian scenes and a ending able to make us reconsider the meaning of the traditional “happy end”. Prime. 

 

3762 - MACABRO (2019)

MACABRO (BRASIL, 2019) – Baseado no escabroso caso dos irmãos necrófilos, ocorrido aqui na década de 90, o filme de Marcos Prado é realizado com  competência na produção, apoiado por uma fotografia caprichada e um elenco correto. Os crimes narrados no filme foram amplamente noticiados na mídia da época, cobrindo os assassinatos em série cometidos por dois jovens irmãos, envoltos em lendas e histórias sobrenaturais, contadas pelos próprios moradores. A captura destes criminosos foi uma das missões mais longas e difíceis da história do BOPE. Based on the scary necrophile brothers’ case that took place here in the 90s, Marcos Prado’s movie is competent as its photography and the cast. The crimes registered in the movie were on the headlines of the time, covering the serial killings perpetrated by the two brothers and the supernatural stories told by the local dwellers. Their prison was one of most complex missions of BOPE (Brazilian special police force). 

 

3761 - A PROVA (2005)

Por quê...?

A PROVA (PROOF, USA, 2005) – O que mais me comove neste filme é ver Gwyneth Paltrow tão desprotegida no papel de Catherine, cujo pai, um famoso matemático (Anthony Hopkins), brilhante, mas mentalmente perturbado, pode ter lhe passado a insanidade como herança. Na vida real, o pai de Gwyneth, Bruce Paltrow tinha morrido inesperadamente duas semanas antes do começo das filmagens. Isso transparece na sua atuação emocionante – tudo a ver com minha relação com ela, algo que gostaria de esquecer, mas não consigo. Rever Gwyneth neste filme é revisitar um passado dolorosamente perdido e que nunca há de se recompor emocionalmente em mim. What is more touching in this movie is Gwyneth Paltrow, so unprotected, playing the role of Catherine, whose father, a brilliant but mentaly disturbed mathematician, recently deceased, could have passed his insanity to her as heritage. In real life, Gwyneth’s father, Bruce Paltrow, unexpectedly died two weeks before filming was due to start. This impact is clear on her poignant performance – this has also to do with my bond with her, something I would yearn to forget, but it is beyond my strength. To see Gwyneth in thin movie is to put a step on a painfully lost past of mine that will never be put together in me.  

 

3760 - A TROCA (2008)

1.       A TROCA (CHANGELING, USA, 2008) – Mais uma direção delicada e sensível de Clint Eastwood, desta vez, tendo como protagonista Angelina Jolie, cujos filmes estão sendo revisitados agora. É notável como Clint aborda um tema tão dramático – uma mãe solteira procurando o filho desaparecido e a polícia de Los Angeles forçando-a a aceitar um impostor – com suavidade, uma quase conversa ao pé do ouvido, sem sobressaltos, apenas pequenas indicações dos fatos. Ele consegue fazer uma ligação, em todos os seus filmes, entre temas como dor e perdas, sempre atento aos detalhes, sem perder o foco e, claro, com atuações marcantes. A TROCA é uma narrativa dramática, contada de modo simples, como deve ser as grandes histórias. Another delicate direction of Clint Eastwood, now with Angelina Jolie, whose films are being revisited now. It is remarkable how Clint approaches such a dramatic theme – a single mother loking for her missing son, while LAPD forces her to welcome a total impostor – just whispering facts, without imposing anything. He is able to establish a link with themes that deal with pain and loss, but the stories are different, the settings require an amazing attention to detail, what they all share is a strong focus, and interestingly enough, superb performances. CHANGELING is a dramatic narrative, told in a simple way, as all the great stories must be told.

 

3759 - ROUBANDO VIDAS (2004)

Angelina - bonita demais para o papel

ROUBANDO VIDAS (TAKING LIVES, USA, 2004) – Nessa fase de olhar novamente a carreira de Angelina Jolie, uma segunda visita a este filme revela um personagem menor para uma atriz em plena ascensão. Tem-se a sensação de que ela está presa dentro do papel cuja importância no roteiro é plenamente questionável. Na realidade, o filme é um mosaico de histórias similares, com certo estilo mas sem qualquer originalidade – a identidade do assassino em série é tão óbvia, que os roteiristas produziram twists inacreditávies para escondê-la. Reviewing Angelina Jolie’s career, I came across this movie in which the common sense is thar she really would deserve a better character. We have the impression that she is trapped inside a minor role in a questionable script. In fact, the flick is a  load of similar movies all rolled into one. It's quite a stylish and sometimes exciting movie, but it's just almost completely lacking in originality. It's also pretty obvious who the killer is early on, so the film's plot has to take some very silly twists and turns to try to hide this.

 

3758 - A MULHER NA JANELA (2021)

.       A MULHER NA JANELA (THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW, USA, 2021) – Vivendo em negação, deprimida e sob medicação, a psicóloga infantil Anna Fox (Amy Adams, uma escolha equivocada para o papel) vive isolada num apartamento pouco iluminado em Manhattan, depois da separação do marido e de sua filha. Homenagem escancarada a Hitchcock feita com boa vontade, mas com resultados aquém do desejado. Uma pergunta: o que Gary Oldman está fazendo nest filme? Living in denial, the depressed, pill-popping child psychologist, Anna Fox (a bad choice for the role) has holed herself up in her eerily vacant, ill-lit Manhattan brownstone apartment for the past ten long months, separated from her husband and their eight-year-old daughter. Homage to Hitchcock, reasonably made, but, in the end, the results are far from desired. One question: what is Gary Oldman doing in this movie?

 OS ÚLTIMOS DIAS (THE LAST DAYS, USA, 1998) - Filme-documentário, produzido por Steven Spielberg, dirigido e escrito por James Moll, sobre campos de concentração durante a Alemanha Nazista e a história de cinco judeus húngaros, sobreviventes de Auschwitz. Venceu o Oscar de melhor documentário de longa-metragem na edição de 1999. Emocionante, é obrigatório para quem quer entender os horrores da WW2. Produced by Steven Spielberg, directed and written by James Moll, about the concentration camps during Nazi Germany, this Oscar-winning documentary focuses on the plight of five Hungarian Jews who survived imprisonment in Auschwitz. Touching and obligatory to those who want to understand the horrors of WW2.

 

3756 - GIA (1998)

GIA (USA, 1998) – Gia Carangi viveu intensamente o glamour e o inferno da vida de uma top model. Angelina Jolie se joga de cabeça num personagem angustiado e angustiante e o faz magistralmente, numa atuação crua, emocionante, combinando um universo infantil com as frustrações advindas de uma maturidade nunca alcançada por ela. Por outro lado, o filme lança mão de alguns clichês tão perigosos quanto desnecessários, especialmente quando se trata de desmistificar o cenário das passarelas. Gia Carangi lived life to its fullest, experiencing the ups and downs of being a supermodel. Angelina Jolie takes  the plunge into a distressing and distresseful character, and gives a raw, emotional performance, combining child-like values and hard frustrations provided by some kind of lost maturity. On the other hand, the movie uses some tricks to string together fuzzy, lofty-sounding clichés and platitudes ("tragic" "lost soul" or "free spirit") that are as useless as dangerous, especially when the aim is the demystification of the supermodels world.

But as years go by, Sharad starts to wonder whether it's really possible to achieve the excellence he's striving for.
